The Pope’s Tweet of the WeekWe need to look at our cities with a contempla-tive gaze, a gaze of faith

which sees God dwelling in homes, on the streets and squares. This presence must be found, discovered. God does not hide himself from those who seek him with a sincere heart. @Pontifex

An Act ofSpiritual

CommunionMy Jesus, I believe that You are present

in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot receive You sacramentally, come spiritually into my heart. I embrace You and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Spirituality@Work—Job loss and the challenge of finding new employment is one of the most difficult transitions many of us will face. During these times of high stress, as we navigate this pandemic, we have an extra need to find and draw strength from our rela-tionships with others and God to restore our spiritual strength. To help us with this challenge, Deacon Dan Coughlin will present Spirituality@Work at our next meeting. Dan will describe his career journey, with its ups and downs, and share his insights and learnings, along with his approach to making spirituality and trust in God an essential tool in dealing with career and life challenges. Dan will explore the spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit and how they can enhance our attitude and confidence throughout the job search. His observations will hopefully help you develop a healthier perspective on your own employment situation. Our sessions are free, and all are welcome. Please preregister at the Zoom link below:

The Family— The School of Love

The family offers the best antidote to all forms of fear and prejudice because it is in the family where we can encoun-ter unconditional love, which echoes God’s love for us. How can we rely more on God’s love and teach our children to love everyone? Consider these examples.

Pray together daily—Pray for the needs of others in your neighborhood, community, and beyond. Help your children to see the needs of people who are different from them. Help

your family to see the Face of Christ in every person. Practice the art of conversation (dialogue) daily—Have real conversations, at an age-appropriate level, about challenges or events that are in the news. Practice hospitality and love of neighbor—Get to know your neighbors’ names and needs, show concern for them, pray for them, and assist them when possible. This week as we continue our journey, read the two-page background articles to help with your Study Guide reflection.

Children’s Prayer—We Are All in God’s Image Loving Father, thank you for the many beautiful colors and languages of the world and for making all your children unique. Thank you for creating me in your image. Thank you for loving me and making me wonderful. Help me to love like you. Help me to share your love with all the children you have made, for they are unique and wonderful. Amen.

August 5, 2020

Dear parishioners of St. Joseph Catholic Church:

The Waukegan to College family – students, parents, staff and volunteers - – are grateful for your continued support.

This year we are proud to have helped our largest group of talented seniors finish their high school journeys; 20 students will be starting their college career this fall.

One of those scholars is Syed. Thanks to your previous support, Syed got to experience numerous trips to college campuses, workplaces and cultural venues. After our summer 2019 college trip, Syed noted, “I felt more comfortable shooting for prestigious schools like Dartmouth, Tufts, Williams, to name a few…I felt my horizons broaden…” Last year W2C students were also able to visit corporations like Horizon Therapeutics to learn about a variety of careers, and cultural events like a production of Annie. Because of your generosity, many other students have been inspired to “think big” when considering their futures. Syed will be attending Dartmouth College in the fall, majoring in Computer Science. He is the oldest of four boys, and we are thrilled his younger brother joined the ranks of W2C scholars last year.

With Gratitude,

Elyse Danckers Executive Director P.S. Please retain this letter as documentation of your tax-deductible gift to Waukegan to College in 2020. No goods or services were provided in exchange for this donation. Waukegan to College is a 501c3 charitable organization, Employer ID Number 45-4860376.

Almighty Father, we beg you for an increase in religious vocations and holy marriages in our parish. Help us to be generous in our response to your call. Choose from our homes those who are needed for your work and strengthen us with the courage to say “yes” and to follow you. Help us as a parish and as families to rec-ognize and foster vocations to the priesthood, religious life, lay min-istry or whatever path you are call-ing us to follow. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

New Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EOM’s) Practicum Training on November 18 Are you called to minister Holy Communion to your brothers and sisters in Christ? There are two requirements for everyone who is an EOM in the Archdio-cese of Chicago: 1) Theology of Ministry and of the Mass training sponsored by the Archdiocese and 2) practical training for the norms at your specific parish. We will be offering a practicum training for all interested in becoming Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EOM’s) on Wednesday, Novem-ber 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the church. This training will fulfill the second half of the requirement established by the Archdiocese. At this time, the Archdiocese has suspended the theological training sessions due to COVID-19. Anyone who successfully completes the training on November 18 may begin serving in ministry at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the understanding that the theological training must be completed once it is offered again by the Archdiocese in Vicariate I. Due to safety regulations, we will not be able to accept walk-ins. If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Kolber at [email protected]. Registra-tion is required to attend this practicum training To register, please use this link https://stjoseph.ivolunteer.com/eom2020

Thoughts on Giving “Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” (Matthew 25:13) Many of us have put off doing something because we think we are too busy. We’ve all said, “I’ll do it later when I have time.” Unfortunately, too many of us apply this attitude to our Faith. Jesus’ call is urgent, in the here and now, in your current circumstances. Don’t delay. How is God calling you to use your gifts today? None of us is guaranteed tomorrow.

Breaking Open the WordA Journey to Discipleship–Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture

1. Proclaim God’s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence.2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way.3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be.

Next Sunday’s Gospel — Matthew 25:14-30Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Response: Glory to You, O Lord

Reflection In this Sunday’s gospel we are reminded to vigilantly tend the flame of faith so that it burns brightly in our hearts and souls. We are encouraged to keep our lamps filled with the graces that come from prayer, scripture and the sacraments. In next Sunday’s gospel, Jesus concludes the teaching phase of His public ministry with one last parable. Jesus wants His disciples to realize that while it is important for us to seek to know the Father more intimately and to be protective of our faith, it is not enough for us to bask in our holiness and await the day of Christ’s return. Jesus reminds us that we have all been given a mission to actively live out our faith and share the Gospel with the world around us. Whether we look upon the ‘talents’ of the parable as the gift of our faith or as our individual talents, skills and charisms, the lesson of this parable is that we are expected to do something to build up the Kingdom of God on this earth. The parable clearly articulates the responsibility we have to make our faith an active and evangelical one. As Paul teaches in the Second Reading (1 Thessalonians 5: 1-6) we are called not only to bring ourselves out of darkness but also to enlighten the world around us. On the last day it will not be enough for us to say, “I have been a good and faithful Catholic.” Perhaps God might respond, “Yes you were, but how did you make My love more present to those I allowed you to share life with? Who did you pray for? Who did you care for? Who did you teach about how much I love them and each person on earth?” We are called to grow in holiness, not just for the sake of holiness itself, but in imitation of Christ who was sent here to bring all back to the Father.

For additional reflection on being judged at our death, see The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 1020-1022; on heaven, hell and purgatory, paragraphs 1023 -1032; and on the Final Judgment, paragraphs 1038-1041.

Reflection Exercises 1. Jesus has called us to love God above all else. How have I grown in my intimate love of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit this past year? How might I faithfully seek to remain filled with God’s generous love?2. Jesus has called us to love our neighbor as He has loved us. How might I help to better know and spread Christ’s message of what His good, true and beautiful love for us and our neighbor should look like in today’s world? How might I respond to the call to love my neighbor? (Find Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy at www.USCCB.org in the Faith and Beliefs section.) Have I been patient and forgiving? How often do I pray for the living and the dead?3. Jesus called us to “go and make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 29:19-20) How well have I been a true disciple? What have I done to make knowledge of Jesus and His teaching more available to my family and friends? My parish? My community?

Readings for the Week

Jesus told his disciples this parable: “A man going on a jour-ney called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one—to each according to his ability. Then he went away. Immediately the one who received five talents went and traded with them, and made another five. Likewise, the one who received two made another two. But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master’s money. “After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, ‘Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful ser-vant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’ Then the one who had received two talents also came forward and said, ‘Master, you gave me two talents. See, I have made two more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faith-

ful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.’ Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a demanding person, harvest-ing where you did not plant and gathering where you did not scatter; so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground. Here it is back.’ His master said to him in reply, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I did not plant and gather where I did not scatter? Should you not then have put my money in the bank so that I could have got it back with interest on my return? Now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten. For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’”
