ARIZONA ROMAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS' STATEMENT ONU.S. DISTRICT COURT JUDGE SUSAN BOLTON'S RULING ON SB 1070

    July 28, 2010

We, the Roman Catholic Bishops in Arizona, commend Judge Susan Bolton for enjoining some of the

more problematic provisions of SB 1070.We hope that reaction to her ruling will be expressed only in peaceful and legal ways.

As Bishops in our respective dioceses, we know that in practically every parish there are families thathave been living with the fear and anxiety generated by SB 1070 that they might be torn apart. Thesituation of these families might be that one parent is a citizen and that the other is not in our country legally. Or, the situation might be that some children in the family are citizens and that abrother or sister is not here legally.

Our hearts go out to these families. We know them to be good people who work hard and whocontribute to the economy and to the quality of life of their communities.

We will continue our advocacy against the provisions of SB 1070 and will monitor the

implementation of the provisions allowed by the ruling. We will continue to advocate for comprehensive reform of our nation's immigration laws.

Our advocacy is predicated on our beliefs that: Illegal immigration is bad for our nation. It is not good for us to not know who is entering our

country. Our international borders need to be secured and we need to be protected from drug

smuggling, weapons smuggling, human trafficking and violence. There must be a process - but not amnesty - for persons who have entered our country illegally

to pursue legal status. This process must have proportionate consequences for the act of illegalentry, consequences that would include fines, learning English, and going to the "back of the

line" to seek citizenship. Our nation needs a program that would allow needed workers to enter the country legally. This

program must include protection of workers rights.

The tragic consequences of the failure of our nation's political leadership to enact reform of our immigration system have included the deaths of thousands of people

Migrants - women, men, children in desperate circumstances - have died trying to enter our country. U.S. citizens have died because of crimes committed by drug smugglers, people smugglersand weapons smugglers.

We pray for those who have died and for their grieving families.

And we pray that our senators and representatives will put aside their partisan divisions and go towork immediately to fix the broken immigration system.

Thank you Casa Community!!! We collected 227 backpacks this year!

This year the Faith In Action Ministry was asked toprovide backpacks for two different organizations. Wetraditionally collect for the children in the foster care

system. We work with Catholic Charitieswho recruits and supports the familieswho take in these children. With Statebudget cuts, the families have even lessmoney to work with as they take care ofthese abused or neglected children. The

125 backpacks with school supplies that we send to themwill be greatly appreciated. The second group that wewill be helping is an orphanage in Haiti. Six months afterthe earthquake the conditions are still very dire. We arehappy that we can send them 102 new backpacks tothem. We asked if the Casa community could doubletheir efforts and you did so! As said in the gospel ofLuke and Matthew Well done good and faithfulservant.

    A Message from the Director:

JustFaith is a 30-week adult educationaland formational program that providesa lively and challenging format to read, view, discuss, pray, experience and be

formed by the justice tradition of theChurch that changes lives, inspires faithful witness, and transforms the world through love and service. Our Catholic faith and biblical tradition extend anextra-ordinary invitation to become agents of Godscom-passion and healing in a wounded world. Most of us long to be a generous and compassionatepeople, however occasion to explore this in adeliberate and engaging way have largely not beenavailable. This program offers you the time, the

space, the material and a community of seekers toexplore this rich tradition.Past Just Faith participants are involved in manyefforts. Here at the Casa they are involved in theLiturgy and Justice Study team, the Casa AdvocacyNetwork, the Faith in Action Advisory Team, theCasa Grounds for Solidarity fair trade coffeeministry, and Pax Christi to just name a few. Thenext JustFaith session will begin in mid-September.The group is forming NOW! Please notify me ofyour interest if you havent done so yet and plan toattend the following sessions: August 22nd (after all the morning masses) An

Information session August 30th 6:30-8:30 pm Discernment Meeting.

Testimony from a prior participant:I always felt that I understood what our Churchtaught regarding Justice. When I joined the secondgroup of JustFaith at the Casa, I quickly learned thatmy understanding was limited and small. JustFaith isabout looking at Church teaching and actualministries which have a direct impact on Peace and

Justice. It is about going into the trenches and beingwilling to grow as your knowledge increases. Withmost programs, you may learn something and thatopens your horizons. With JustFaith, you will betransformed because your view of your world willchange. Take 30 weeks and see what it does for you!Peace and Joy, Rosemarie LeClercq, SFO

The Churchs social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdomabout building a just society and living lives of holinessamidst the challenges of modern society. The U.S.Catholic Bishops have set forth 7 themes of CatholicSocial Teaching. The following is one of the themes.

Call to Family, Community, and ParticipationThe person is not only sacred but also social. How weorganize our societyin economics and politics, in lawand policydirectly affects human dignity and thecapacity of individuals to grow in community. Marriageand the family are central social institutions that must besupported and strengthened. We believe people have aright and a duty to participate in society, seekingtogether the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable.
