the Catalyst This is my last submission to the Catalyst as the Chair of the Phil-adelphia Section of the ACS. I need to submit my comments today (October 20th), which is the beginning of National Chemistry Week (NCW). I know there are several activities associated with NCW at Temple University. I hope that other campuses and indus-trial sites around the Section are also participating in outreach

events associated with NCW.

The October Section meeting was the seminar presentation by Professor Feng Gai, the Philadel-phia Section Awardee for 2014. It was a well-attended event. The awards committee is looking forward to evaluating next year’s nominees. You can send nomination packets to Libby Harper at the Section Office at UPenn ([email protected]). Contact me if you have any questions about this process. We need nomination packets to be submitted next spring. I hope you have taken time to participate in the Philadelphia Section election this year. Please join me in thanking all those who were willing to have their names put on the ballot. We wel-come those who were elected and we encourage those who were not elected to continue being involved with the Section. We hope the ACS members of the former Ocean County Section of the ACS will choose to join the Philadelphia Section. We are eager to improve our inclusion of all ACS members in Section activities. We have a terrific YCC group, an active Career Services Committee, an involved WCC group, the beginnings of a Senior Chemists Committee, and several individuals who ex-pend considerable effort keeping the Education Committee on track. We have a communica-tions committee, a finance committee, an awards committee, and a social committee. There’s a place for anyone who wishes to volunteer. I appreciate the time and energy that so many of you give to the functions of the Philadelphia Section. Keep up the good work!

SPEAKER’S ABSTRACT AND BIOGRAPHY Dr. George M. Whitesides

Woodford L. and Ann A. Flowers University Professor Harvard University

Soft Robots

Abstract: Organic chemistry, materials science, and robotics come together in the development of soft robots. In this talk Dr. George M. Whitesides will describe increasingly elastic robot sys-tems that bridge the gap between man-made machines and their biological counterparts. White-sides’s research group at Harvard University has created robots modeled on organisms without internal skeletons, such as worms, squids and starfish. Various robots designed by the White-sides group can squeeze through a mouse-hole, or jump 30 times their body height—and inter-act safely with humans, making them potentially powerful tools for disaster relief or search-and-rescue missions.

Biography: Dr. George M. Whitesides was born August 3, 1939 in Louisville, KY. He received an AB from Harvard University in 1960 and a PhD from the California Institute of Technology (with J.D. Roberts) in 1964. He was a member of the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1963 to 1982. He joined the Department of Chemistry of Harvard University in 1982, and was Department Chairman 1986-1989, and Mallinckrodt Professor of Chemistry from 1982-2004. He is now the Woodford L. and Ann A. Flowers University Professor. His contributions cover a wide range of topics including materials and organic surface chemis-try, soft lithography, molecular self-assembly, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), organometallic chemistry, nanotechnology, microfluidics, microfabrication, and catalysis, ener-gy production and conservation and rational drug design. He is best known for his contributions towards understanding how molecules arrange themselves on a surface and his studies have paved the way for many advances in nanoscience, novel electronic technologies, pharmaceutical sciences and medical diagnostics. He is a Fellow or Honorary Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Nation-al Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the American Philosophical So-ciety, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Institute of Physics, the New York Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Indian National Science Academy and the Chemical Research Society of India. He is also Member of the Royal Nether-lands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Member and Chair of the International Scientific Advisory Board of the Genomics Research Center, Academia Sinica and Honorary Member of the Mate-rials Research Society of India. His prizes include the National Medal of Science; the Welch Award; the Priestley Medal; the American Institute of Chemists Gold Medal; the Kyoto Prize

the Catalyst YCC NETWORKING AND WEBINAR: SPEAKING SIMPLY

The Younger Chemist Committee (YCC) hosted a Program in a Box event at Drexel University on October 7th. The participants played networking bingo, engaged in hands on activities to learn about communicating science, and watched a webinar on how to communicate science to both a technical and non-technical audience. One of the activities was to have one person create a structure out of marshmallows and toothpicks, a second person describe the structure to a third person who had not seen the original structure and has to replicate it. Our group did pretty well! (see photos below). Most participants also walked away with a door prize. Special thanks to Jessica Levin for organizing this event for our Section.
