Children may not be aware that their vision is a problem. Vision problems can turn into learning problems. We feel it’s critical to our mission of creating healthy communities and bright futures that we remove vision challenges and make way for improved education.

Conexus was an obvious choice when we looked for a partner to make it happen. Their tech-based vision screenings and data collection demonstrated a path forward we could easily get behind.

You see, Conexus already provides state-mandated screenings: one hand over one eye, read the chart. The other hand over the other eye, read the chart again. However, kids can pass by memorizing the chart, squinting, guessing etc. So, Conexus sought out funding beyond the state mandate to bring a new way of screening to Virginia. It’s called the Visio Check, and it’s amazing.

“JRF was instrumental in bringing technology-based screenings into the Tri-Cities area. Without their support we would only be able to provide the chart based test which kids can, for lack of a better term, cheat to pass,” said Robin Mead, Conexus VP/Development.

I witnessed a screening at J.E.B. Stewart Elementary in Petersburg. One by one, students stood opposite a smiley-faced VisioCheck scanner in the hands of a screening specialist. The VisioCheck measured physical differences in the eyes, scanned for astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness among a host of other things. Because

the students didn't have to do anything, the results couldn’t be fudged.

Once the screenings are complete, the Conexus team takes the data back to the office and prints out the results of each test to send back to the school. Students receive their results with either a “pass” or “refer” result.

“The average percentage of kids with vision problems detected by a screening across the US is 25%. What we have found across our more economically challenged, and especially urban communities, such as Petersburg and Hopewell, is that the rate of referrals is 30% or even higher,” said Robin.

For the Foundation, the data Conexus collects during screenings is crucial, and a truly exciting aspect of our partnering with Conexus. It’s shown that students with vision problems are, in fact, struggling academically, but students who receive glasses as a result of their Conexus screening are making vast improvements. Success!

But that’s not the end of their success. Conexus is a state-wide organization. They are using the collected data from their screenings (anonymously) to petition that technology-based screening be mandated across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

While the Tri-Cities community is at the core of who we are and what drives us every day, we are excited to partner with Conexus here on the cutting edge of seeing healthy communities and bright futures across the state. •

GO PLAY OUTSIDE FRIENDS OF THE LOWER APPOMATOX RIVER FUELS A LOVE OF THE OUTDOORS

As I pull into Appomattox River Regional park, two women are raking the trail.“Has anyone seen Ken?” One woman lifts her head, “I have!” It's Debbie Newman, Friends of the Lower Appomattox River (FOLAR) Treasurer, and Ken’s wife. Debbie leads me to a nearby spot where students and families are picking up trash under the overpass. “I hate trash,’ she says. “It shows such extreme disregard for the planet.” As we reach the overpass, Ken Newman, FOLAR Board Chair, is in the middle of it, picking up garbage and cheering on the volunteers.FOLAR orchestrates clean-ups on a regular basis, but this one is particularly special because they are officially opening the new canoe-kayak launch, and the only public water access location in Prince George.

Appomattox River Regional Park is a key access point of the Appomattox River Trail which spans from Lake Chesdin to City Point in Hopewell.

This park and the other regional parks like it, are the result of hours and hours of hard work put in by FOLAR’s executive staff and volunteers.

“John Randolph Foundation’s grant enables us to procure the right type of executive leadership required to manage the many facets of trail development and funding," says Ken. "As a result of their support, our staff handles everything: negotiating and planning with interested stakeholders, preparing and submitting funding requests, managing the office, planning events, engaging volunteers, and developing our Board. JRF funding continues to enable our Executive Director to work tirelessly on the Appomattox River Trail."

And that work is a worthy endeavor! FOLAR isn’t just about nature trails. They provide quality education and activities to residents in the region.

“We highlight the importance of our natural resources through all our activities and events. We teach people the importance of clean water, litter

control, watershed protection, and resource stewardship. Our Newsletter highlights Greenway and Blueway (land and water) activities, and our programs such as Canoemobile, Paddle~Battle, and the Appomattox River Regional Park 5K promote healthy outdoor recreation. RiverFest engages regional citizens to celebrate outdoor living. We also distribute literature to promote visitation, use and stewardship opportunities along the river.”

FOLAR also established a scholarship program through JRF in 2017. The FOLAR Environmental Stewardship Scholarship fuels the passion of young people committed to protecting and preserving our environment for current and future generations.

“My personal hope is that individuals who receive these scholarships find rewarding and meaningful careers in environmental-related fields and perhaps, hopefully, return to our communities as active, inspiring leaders in local nonprofits, organizations and government!” said Ken. •

Over 150 volunteers removed 500 bags of trash, 118 tires, and 2 couches from the banks of the Appomattox River during the Spring 2018 Clean-up.

Chrinique Christian is manning the front desk of the Petersburg YMCA. In between answering calls and typing on the computer, she waves happily to each guest as they come and go. Chrinique is in her first year of college at Virginia State University, but she’s been a staple at the Y for more than a year now.

“One day I was walking past the billboard, and it said, ‘Leaders Club.’ I thought, ‘I’m a leader maybe I should join.’ I felt like it would help me and I could help the people I’d be working with. I had skills to give, and other people had skills they could give too.”

Chrinique joined Leaders Club during her senior year at Matoaca High School, and she quickly became one of the strongest voices in the room. The YMCA administration took notice, eventually offering her a job at the front desk.

Leaders Club is coordinated by the YMCA Teen Director Kennard Curtis. Kennard grew up in Petersburg where he frequented the Y, and it kept him out of trouble. Although he became a firefighter, he wanted to give back to the young people in his community.

“There’s not a lot for teenagers to do here. The YMCA keeps kids off the streets, and it gives them a safe haven: somewhere to be, to fellowship, and develop character. I had a father, but a lot of kids coming through

these doors don't. I’m the Teen Director, but when I’m walking through these halls, I’m a mentor, a big brother, and a father figure,” said Kennard.

The Y focuses on developing core values in young people: caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith. These values produce people like Chrinique – dedicated to giving back and encouraging others.

“Joining Leaders Club kept me rooted. I had an offer to go out-of-state, but that doesn’t help my community. This is where I’m from; this is the community I prefer to affect the most because I know these people. Leaders Club reminded me that I have other reasons to stay here, and staying here isn’t a bad thing,” said Chrinique.

Leaders Club is part of JRF’s mission to build healthy communities and bright futures. We’ve supported teen programs at the Petersburg YMCA since 2008 because the Y strives to reduce idle time after school, providing teens from low-income backgrounds with the opportunity to reach their full potential. The Y is positioned to provide at-risk teens with experiences to increase their leadership skills, service to the community, and develop tangible workforce skills. They give teens the tools break the cycle of poverty and become the leaders of their community. •

“I had read about the Foundation, and I constantly saw something in the paper. One day, someone called me and asked me if I’d be interested in serving on the Board of Trustees, and I was.”That was nine years ago. Hopewell native Brenda Hayes said yes and joined the Board of Trustees of John Randolph Foundation in 2009.[When I started], everyone on the Board and the staff was willing to take time so I could learn what the Foundation does and how they work with the community.”Those relationships and the knowledge about the work JRF does made Brenda a true advocate for the Foundation. She became an active trustee and an annual donor. She’s also a monthly supporter through the Bright Futures Club.

She says, “When you don’t just read or hear about what the Foundation is doing, but you actually know where the money is going and what’s being done to help people in the Tri-Cities area, you just feel like you can give something, and the Bright Futures Club makes it easier.”Her husband, John Hayes, chimes in. “We both believe this is a wholesome organization, committed to helping the community and citizens that are in need. Personally, I’m a big fan of the [Foundation’s] Scholarship Program. They do a lot to help gifted students who need a hand up with their finances and college education.”Along with the Development Committee, and attending Foundation events, Brenda has been on the Scholarship Committee

for all nine years. In her time, she’s seen the program double, and she’s continued because she wanted to see the program flourish. But the growth goes two ways. John reflects on the growth he’s seen in his wife: “Brenda is very giving, more than she’s ever been. The Foundation has enlightened her about what can be accomplished when you become a part of something that makes a difference.”So after nearly a decade of serving her community through the John Randolph Foundation, Brenda Hayes left the board in January 2018.“I knew my term would expire, but I’m not walking away from the Foundation. I’m still going to keep in touch, attend activities open to the public, and volunteer on any committees that need me. I won’t forget the Foundation. I can’t forget them. It’s such a unique group. You’ve got a small staff that does wonders for the Tri-Cities area. They make it look easy, and I know it’s not,” said Brenda.John adds, “I support my wife and became a friend of the Foundation through her. We’ve established a lifetime of friendship with the staff. It’s highly rewarding to help out those who need medication and can’t afford it, or for those who need housing. Those are the things I’ll take with me.”The Foundation’s staff has treasured their time with Brenda. She’s played a critical role in the Foundation’s growth and, by extension, the amazing growth evident in the Tri-Cities area including the expansion of the Scholarship Program, the birth of Susie’s Fund for Medication Assistance, and the overall improved health and promised bright futures of our community.Lisa Sharpe, Foundation Executive Director, reflects “Brenda Hayes and her husband John have been an Continued at the bottom of the next page...

Brenda’s commitment and leadership at John Randolph Foundation have never wavered. She’s a ‘details person’ and always asks the hard questions that push the Board and staff to grow as a team. John Randolph Foundation’s scholarship program has experienced tremendous growth following the establishment of the first scholarship in 1997. Fast forward twenty-one years, and the Foundation currently administers 65 scholarships. What is the biggest contributing factor to the success of the scholarship program? The answer is, our donors. Thanks to their generosity, vision, and passion for higher education, scholarships are created on the belief that any motivated individual should have the opportunity to further his or her education by removing some of the financial burdens. The Foundation is simply the conduit by which donors invest in our community’s future. Over the last 21 years, through various scholarship programs, the Foundation has awarded over $1.6 million in scholarships to more than 900 students.A scholarship fund is a wonderful way to honor a loved one, alma mater, high school, city or town, or profession. Donors provide the passion and vision and the Foundation provides the expertise to help donors meet their personal goals. Among the most common reasons individuals, businesses, or organizations set up scholarships are to honor a living person, honor or perpetuate the memory of a deceased person, provide a special gift in one's own name, or collaborate as a group of people to give back to the youth of their community. Each scholarship has a unique story to tell. Bill Lee stated, “establishing the Coach Robert E. (Bob) Budlove Golf Scholarship was a way for family, friends and former students to honor a beloved

coach who was influential in shaping many to become successful leaders.” For Rick Collins and the Hopewell Fire Department, “raising funds to establish the Hopewell Fire and Rescue Retiree Scholarship provided an opportunity for the Hopewell Fire Department retirees, employees, and members to give back to the youth of the city and surrounding localities.” Johnny Partin, one of Hopewell’s most sincere advocates, established three scholarships with the Foundation over the last couple of years. The Bo Partin, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, Glen W. and Virginia R. Butler Memorial Scholarship, and Stoney and June Partin Scholarship. Johnny stated “I have always been a strong advocate for the youth, higher education, and technical and vocational schooling. By establishing these scholarships in memory of my uncle and grandparents, not only does it honor them, but it helps reduce the financial burden of higher education. I couldn't think of a better way to honor my family members, and it also allowed me to pay it forward by helping the youth of our city, something I feel very passionate about.” The Foundation is honored and privileged to partner with donors who generously support our students and community. John Randolph Foundation’s Scholarship Program has truly succeeded in its first 21 years because of their continued support, just ask any of the more than 900 students who received a scholarship! For information on how to establish a scholarship or to view a complete list of scholarships, please visit our website at johnrandolphfoundation.org/scholarships. •
