Welcome to 2016! The first Sunday after New Year’s Day commemorates the Epiphany – we honour the tradition of the Wise Ones coming to the end of their search for the “new born king” and presenting their gifts. As we open the door on 2016, it is appropriate to reflect on the year just ended and the point to which our own individual and parish faith journeys have led. Last year had scarcely begun when Pope Francis announced his choice of our Archbishop, John Dew, as a member of the College of Cardinals. This meant new responsibilities as he was quickly thrust into Church governance at the international level. The Archdiocese celebrated this new and greatly deserved honour in February. Cardinal John is one of our treasured gifts for 2015. The papal announcement of the Holy Year of Mercy came in April and set in motion a time of preparation for the opening of this special “Year” on 8 December. This preparatory work involved the Liturgy Committee and Pastoral Council which also welcomed the opportunity to promote the October Synod on Family Life, held in Rome. The Year of Mercy holds enormous potential for pastoral outreach and community and personal growth. It will engage us more fully during this new year. The “Synod” and the “Year” are further treasures in our catalogue of gifts for 2015. Our Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish, together with the Cathedral School continues to thrive with events, activities and initiatives to encourage faith and community development. Celebrations over Labour Weekend honoured Catholic faith and education that has remained unbroken on our Thorndon site for 165 years. The Passionist Family Movement was established and our multi- cultural life added to the great variety of gifts. While there were sad farewells there were also joyful beginnings, ensuring 2015 a year rich with treasure. Thank you for whatever part you play in the gifted community. Fr James Lyons - PP
