TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Occasionally, someone raises a surprised complaint that while Christmas arrives on Santa’s sleigh at the Macy’s parade on Thanksgiving Day, the Church doesn’t catch on too fast. They may even say that Advent is a new‑fangled idea. Not so. To trace its beginnings, we have to go back to the fourth or fifth century in France (then Gaul), when Epiphany was the favored day, next to Easter, for baptism. The old pagan structures of Rome were collaps-ing then, and many people sought to be baptized. Since adults always prepared for baptism by fasting, folks counted back a few weeks for a kind of retreat. Before too long, bishops were advising everyone to attend church frequently beginning on December 17. Soon, artists were imagining ways of expressing the Advent mystery, and in Italy this gave rise to beautiful mosaics of empty thrones awaiting the arrival of the Lord of all creation. Advent as we know it develops on two separate tracks: the first having to do with our spiritual preparation for celebrating the Christmas feast, and the second having to do with the way this is organized and expressed in the liturgical readings and prayers every day of the season. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

From the Desk of Father Robert On December 8 we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of The Blessed Virgin Mary. This is a Holy Day of Obligation and a dogma of the Catholic Church. Much devotion to Our Lady has occurred throughout history and in 1708, Pope Clement XI established this Solemnity for the entire Church. Originally, Dec. 8 was celebrated as the Conception of Mary since her Feast of the Nativity of Mary is September 8. The Immaculate Conception doctrine means Mary was conceived immaculately – without stain of original sin and its consequences. Mary was in a state of sanctifying grace from the moment of her existence and it continued throughout her life. This dogma was defined by Pope Pius IX in his constitution, Ineffabilis Deus, on December 8th, 1854. This came several years after the bishops of the United States chose our Blessed Mother, under the title of Immaculate Conception, to be the Patroness of the United States of America. This occurred at the Plenary Council of Baltimore held in 1846. Our nation and our people were faithfully entrusted to the Holy Mother of God for her protection. It was our nation’s confident hope to be strengthened and enabled by Our Blessed Mother’s grace and help. As Pope St. John Paul beautifully summarized, “The bishops of the Church in the United States have chosen you in the mystery of your Immaculate Conception as the Patroness of the People of God in this country. May the hope enclosed in this mystery prevail over sin and may it be shared among all the sons and daughters of America and throughout the human family. In a period during which the struggle between good and evil, between the prince of darkness and Father of light and evangelical love is becoming greater, may the light of your Immaculate Conception show to all the way of grace and salvation.” Amen.

NOVENA FOR LIFE Knights of Columbus will start the Novena for Life on December 8th. Prayer Cards will be distributed at all Masses. We invite and encourage all to pray for nine consecutive days.
