Life and Death An unborn baby has a measurable heartbeat at twenty-one days and brainwaves at forty days----long before the earliest abortions. What do you call it when there is no longer a heartbeat or brainwaves? Death! What do you call it when there is a heartbeat and brainwaves? Life! So, what does abortion do? Source:Pro-Life Articles

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Here they are again, those unsettling “end of time” scriptures we always get at the end of the church year. This season does not go quietly, folding over into a docile, meek Advent. The synoptic gospels (Mark, Matthew and Luke) all speak of a calamitous end of days, with wars, fires, floods, and earthquakes ushering it in. Or maybe that’s just a quick google search of what happened on planet earth yesterday. I wonder if there has ever been a time in history when every one of those scary portents wasn’t happening all the time? Jesus knew those calamities had happened---and would happen---in every age, and IN every age, wrItes composer Janet Sullivan Whitaker, He is our refuge. I love to think about the billions of years in which life was forming on earth, and the hundreds of thousands of years in which human life was forming. Then, that extremely recent---yesterday, really---time just four thousand years ago when the shepherds ran to Bethlehem to see that which the angels had announced to them in Shepherd’s Field, five miles away in space, four billions years away in time. How? In every age, he was, is, and ever shall be. Now, we know from the historian Eusebius that, in fact, the entire Christian community living in Jerusalem at the time of the Roman seige of 70 AD (prophesied by Jesus in today’s gospel) escaped to Pella, a city across the Jordan River. They were saved! Yes, and just a few years earlier hundreds of Christians living in Rome died horrible deaths at the hands of Nero. They were not saved. But hold fast. In every age, Jesus is our refuge.

How are you praying in these unsettling times?
