Family Perspective: Parents plant values in their children anticipating that the tiny seeds of honesty, respect, commitment and fidelity will grow with their child and one day become “a safe haven” to many.

Marriage Moments: "For we do not know how to pray as we ought." (Romans 8: 26) Praying together is one of the most intimate (and scary) deeds a couple can do. Revealing our innermost thoughts and feelings can be a risk. Read Who Me? Pray? With Her? for ideas at http://susanvogt.net

Dear Beloved Family,

When those old enough to understand hear the words “Natural Family Planning,” there are varied reactions:

Some people wince and think that a couple has to birth as many children as they can possibly bear.

Some people smile and think NFP is the flawed science and technique of decades ago.

And yet other people see something very positive and life-giving. They see deep affection, natural purpose, extremely low divorce rates, and family closeness.

You see, Natural Family Planning (NFP) is the general title for the scientific, natural and moral methods of family planning that can help married couples either achieve or postpone pregnancies. NFP methods are based on the observation of the naturally occurring signs and symptoms of the fertile and infertile phases of a woman's menstrual cycle. No drugs, devices, or surgical procedures are used to avoid pregnancy. Since the methods of NFP respect the love-giving (unitive) and life-giving (procreative) nature of the conjugal act, they support God's design for married love! Remember, pharmaceutical manufacturers make untold millions of dollars every year from contraceptives – only to leave couples weary of the artificial life they embrace. Intimacy becomes a thing to do while they prevent life from happening, whereas NFP becomes a lifestyle of natural love and respect, which will never harm you with chemicals and sterile attitudes.

With my being a single, celibate priest, you may find it odd that my brother priests and I so fully embrace such a process of family planning. In my journey of priesthood, having come in close contact with many families who practice this method, I have seen happy couples who, while not spared of the normal aches and pains of marriage, are extremely committed to making their love TOTAL, FAITHFUL, FRUITFUL, and FREE. They are conscientious parents and friends. They love gathering together with other like-minded families and form communities who really care for one another. If I were married, I would not hesitate for one moment to learn and live the NFP method of family planning because it corresponds to the good of the couple, not the “fear” of a baby. I am very impressed with the quality of marriages which embrace Natural Family Planning. Really, there is a big difference!

If you are interested in learning more about Natural Family Planning, please visit: http://www.eriercd.org/chastity.htm. The diocesan staff will be wonderful to interact with and address your questions. Don’t REACT to NFP; RESPOND to it. Your marriage and family will be blessed!

In Christ’s love,

Father Mark Thought for the week…

“Do not walk through time without leaving worthy evidence of your passage.”

St. Pope John XXIII

NFP Awareness Week set for July 23-29 Bishop Lawrence Persico, in conjunction with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has designated July 23-29 Natural Family Planning Awareness Week. NFP is a way of life that incorporates fertility awareness, responsible parenthood and self-mastery into married love. To learn more about this church teaching, pick up literature from your parish, attend a class, visitwww.ErieRCD.org/chastity.htm, or contact the Diocesan Chastity Education Office at 814-824-1259 or 1-800-374-3723, ext. 259. Calling all Home School Families Are you a family who practices home schooling for your children? If so, please contact Father Mark and let him know. He would like to invite the students into greater participation in the ministries of Server and Lector. Take Me to Worship comes to Our Diocese: Parishioners, please be aware that the Diocese of Erie is in support of the Take Me to Worship Campaign that will be running in the community from August 15 – October 30, 2017. The Bishop believes that the data about the positive impact that regular, weekly participation at Mass has on children of all ages is a good reason for our parishes in Erie County to jump aboard and promote this initiative. It is the hope of the diocese that more and more families will come back to their Catholic faith and/or bring about the conversion to Catholicism for those without a faith community. Please visit www.takemetoworship.org or contact the Family Life Office with additional questions at 814-824-1261 or [email protected].

Child Protection and Creating Safe Environments Online Safety Tips for Parents & Kids: Parents should consider having internet accounts in their name with parents having the primary screen name, controlling passwords and using blocking and/or filtering devices. Children should not complete a profile for a service provider and children’s screen names should be nondescript so as not to identify that the user is a child.
