The Catholic Community of Holy Family Sacred Heart St. Alphonsus St Ann Fr. John Gathenya Fr. Michael Brown April 11, 2021 Divine Mercy Sunday Divine Mercy Sunday If we are truly Apostles of Divine Mercy, then we need to be getting really serious about helping Jesus in these three crucial and important facts related to our faith: First of all, we must recognize the need to get all Catholics back to the practice of their faith especially participating in the sacramental life of the Church; second, renew our basic catechesis on why we should confess serious sins before receiving the Eucharistic Lord. Third, we should make it a church priority and concern to reach out to those inactive fallen Catholics in our local areas who no longer attend Mass at all. Most of us remember the Sunday after Easter as Low Sunday . However, it is now known as Divine Mercy Sunday . Saint Pope John Paul II, who died on the Vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday in 2005, designated this Sunday, the Second Sunday of Easter, as DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY. This Feast celebrates the mercy of God poured out upon us through Jesus Christ. It is dedicated to the devotion of Divine Mercy promoted by St. Faustina, and is based upon an entry in St. Faustina's diary stating that anyone who participates in the Mass and receives the sacraments of confession and Eucharist on this day is assured by Jesus of full remission of sins. What is so special about this new Feast of Divine Mercy you might be asking yourself? It is the promise of the total forgiveness of all sins and punishment for any soul that would go to Confession and then receive Jesus in Holy Communion on that very special Feast of Divine Mercy! Jesus told St. Faustina that she was to prepare the world for His Second Coming and that He would be pouring out His Mercy in very great abundance before He comes again as the Just Judge and as the very last hope of salvation. According to the notebooks of Saint Faustina, Jesus made the following statements about this day: "On that day the very depths of my tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity." (Diary of Saint Faustina, 699) If you have been away from the practice of your Catholic faith, and if you would like to come back into the, one, true Catholic Church, then this is the most perfect opportunity for you. Many former fallen-away Catholics have taken advantage of this great Feast of Mercy to get a brand new start in life and to be totally prepared to stand before the Lord. If you have been away from the Catholic faith and if you have any questions about coming back home, then come in and talk to a priest at any Catholic Church. Our Lord Jesus wants to pardon completely even the worst sinners possible. Remember, Jesus has come for sinners, not the righteous. Jesus said that even if our sins were as numerous as the grains of sand, they would be lost in His Ocean of Mercy. If you are truly repentant of your sins and are well prepared to confess your sins in the Sacrament of Confession, youll experience a tremendous peace. The Gospel reading every year on the Second Sunday of Easter, Jesus enters the upper room where the disciples are and tells them, Peace be with you. That peace lies at the heart of Divine Mercy. It is the peace which Jesus won for all men and women on the cross. This is the reason that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is an avenue of peace! Youll experience a great weight lifted from you and get a brand new start in life! Through Divine Mercy, the great gift of Jesuscross and resurrection, we can hear Jesus once again say to us, Peace be with you.Once you have confessed your sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, then you must continue to practice your faith as a good Catholic. This involves attending Mass every Sunday and on Holy Days of Obligation, supporting your local parish, and confessing your serious sins at least once a year. Peace and Joy, Fr. John

Although Covid-19 cases have dropped significantly in Cayuga County, we have not relaxed our safety measures at any of our churches at this time. It is very important that we continue to wear our face coverings and observe social distancing while in church and in the front vestibule. This is for our safety as well as yours. Also remember the obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains suspended, but if you are able we would love to see you back at Mass. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

CRS RICE BOWL: Sharing across the Globe

We prayed, we fasted and gave alms – and now we rejoice because Christ is risen! Our Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl challenges us as we begin the Easter season to share the joy of having a loving God that is alive and accompanies us always. We do likewise by being present to our global family, caring for their material and spiritual needs. Please turn in your CRS Rice Bowl alms as soon as possible. Kindly don’t turn in a bowl full of change; instead count you offering and write a check payable to the parish and mail to the parish office or put in an envelope and place in the box provided in church or transmit your alms online at the parish website. Thank you for standing with our sisters and brothers around the globe.

LET’S CELEBRATE FR. GAESSER’S 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF ORDINATION The Catholic Community of St. Ann’s, St. Alphonsus, Holy Family and Sacred Heart invite you to commemorate the 60th ordination anniversary of Fr. Ron Gaesser. The Holy Sacrifice of the Eucharistic Mass will take place Sunday, June 13th at 2:00pm at Holy Family Church with a reception to follow. More details to follow.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic Sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God” (1032). We want to remind parishioners that Mass Intentions or Tabernacle Candles may be made by calling your Parish Office. We still have MANY dates available for 2021. Please call Kathy(315-252-9576) or Nancy (315-252-7271). If you would like you may stop in the office Monday–Thursday from 9:00am-2:30pm. Please wear a mask for our safety.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY will be observed this Sunday afternoon, April 11 at St. Hyacinth Church, 63 Pulaski Street, beginning with Eucharistic Adoration at 1:00 pm and concluding with the Divine Mercy Chaplet & Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 3:00pm. Due to the pandemic, Confessions will not be available this year. “Let Souls who are striving for perfection particularly adore my mercy, because the abundance of graces which I grant them flows from my mercy.” Sr. Faustina’s Diary (1578)

“Lord, when did we see You… in prison?” Matthew 25:39 “Please, don’t give up on them.”- A former inmate speaking to a jail ministry on behalf of her incarcerated friends. We have many times heard Jesus speak about “giving liberty to captives” (Luke 4:18), and we are always deeply touched by His compassion upon the crucified thief who asked Jesus to remember him as he entered into His Kingdom. Yet, we might ask ourselves how often our own outreach concerns extend to our incarcerated brothers and sisters and their families. Are we aware of the conditions in jails and prisons on our society? America’s rate of incarceration is greater than any other nation’s in the world: although our country has 5% of the world’s population, it has 25% of its prisoners. Sentence length and time served are much longer in the US than elsewhere, and include more solitary confinement, less rehabilitations, and poor re-entry assistance. The levels of Covid-19 in many of our prisons promoted one NYC inmate to remark, “It’s…like we aren’t even human.” A crime data expert at the Brennan Center for Justice recently observed, “It is really a system that sets people up for failure.” (America, August 2020)

The Easter season brings the participation of several young people to our community in three sacraments; Healing

- Reconciliation, the Eucharist, and Confirmation.

The Sacrament of Healing, Reconciliation- First Penance

As we enter the Easter season and begin to emerge from the pandemic, we celebrate our young parishners who

were able to participate in the sacrament on healing in receiving their First Penance: Mariana Barbuto, Macie

Besner, Spencer Carr, Kendall Casler, Leah Collister, McKenna Collister, Makenna Guild, Haley Kehoskie,

Carolyn Kufs, Kylie Miller, Rose Musso, Emma Redsicker, and Adelyn Szozda.

In preparing the children, we teach them that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is part of our journey back to God.

Together we are all on a journey and happiness comes from living daily as a disciple of Jesus.

The Sacrament of the Eucharist- First Holy Communion

Our Catholic Community will be celebrating First Holy Communion on the following dates: Sacred Heart

April 25th at 9am, Holy Family May 2nd at 12pm, and St. Alphonsus on May 8th at 12pm. We currently have 15

candidates preparing for the Sacrament. Due to Covid restrictions, attendance at First Communion masses will be

limited to the families of the participants.

The Sacrament of Confirmation

We are blessed to have 24 young people receiving their Confirmation on April 24th at St. Alphonsus. These

candidates have participated in a two-year instructional journey.

We ask that you pray for these children on their faith journeys, they are the future of our Catholic Community:

Lord, please pray for these children as they journey in their faith. Please reveal yourself to them in a new

way and remind them of your presence in their lives. Help them to use the Holy Spirit for guidance and

direction as they face the challenges of a new day.

God Bless,

Barbara Quinn,

Coordinator of Faith Formation
