DEATH BY STONING MY CHOSEN PEOPLE

IN THE CARE OF THE AUGUSTINIANS

The question posed to Jesus by the Pharisees was meant to trick him. If he condoned her stoning, the act would break Roman law; if he refused to condone it, he would be holding religious law in

contempt. In his response, God, in Jesus, is offering a new way. He does not condemn the sinner but invited her to leave her past behind and begin again. This imagery of forgiveness is consistent throughout the Lenten Readings.

♦ Preparations are underway for Holy Week and Easter.

♦ VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED—Sign on sheets have been placed in

Thursday evening in the parish centre.

♦ We also need olive branch and pre-cut palm donations for Palm Sunday, which can be

St Patrick’s Day this year is celebrated on Monday 18th as it falls this year on a Sunday in Lent.

The following day, Tuesday 19th March, Feast of St Joseph, universal Patron of the Church and the probable day of the inauguration of the new Pope.

“ Cardinals went to the end of world to find me” Pope Francis addressed his first words to the Church by saying that the cardinals “went to the end of the world” to find the new Bishop of Rome. The Pope then called on the crowd of tens of thousands to pray for “our Bishop Emeritus Benedict.” “This path that the Church commences,” he said, is one of “evangelization in this beautiful city.” Before he closed his remarks, Pope Francis asked the crowd to pray for him in silence before he gave his blessing.

In his first homily as Pope he concluded: “I would like for us all, after these days of grace, to have courage, precisely the courage, to walk in the Lord’s presence, with the cross of the Lord; to build the Church upon the blood of the Lord, which was poured out on the cross; and to confess the only glory there is: Christ crucified. 1. Compassion for human frailty combined with a gentle challenge to a better life marked the response of Jesus. From whom have you experienced a compassionate challenge? What was that like for you? To whom have you given such a challenge?

John Byrne osa John 8:1-11

3. ‘What do you say?’ can be an embarrassing question. Jesus had the courage to voice an opinion, even though it was against the party line of the day. When have you seen that courage shown – by yourself or by another? What was the result?

Pardon, that you may be pardoned. In doing this, nothing is required of the body. It is the will that acts. You will experience no physical pain; you will have nothing less in your home. Now in truth, my brothers and sisters, you see what an evil it is that those who have been

commanded to love even their enemy do not pardon a penitent brother or sister. Sermon 210, 10

2. The Pharisees and scribes self-righteously condemned the woman until Jesus brought them in touch with their own sinfulness. This was a conversion moment for them and they turned away from their quest for the death of

“HABEMUS PAPAM”

The wait was not as long as some might have anticipated and a general sense of surprise and speechlessness seemed to overwhelm many commentators. An Argentinian of Italian heritage, a Vatican outsider, a Jesuit and a first-time papal

title, Francis the First. At the age of 76, a few months shy of John XXIII at his election, and not resilient in health, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio presents a somewhat unlikely choice. Few could claim to have predicted such an outcome.

Just as the choice of the name Benedict by his immediate predecessor suggested his agenda of evangeliser through discipline and unity, so too the name of the poor man of Jesus from Assisi might suggest a gentler approach – back to basics, a concern for the struggling and pressing social issues and a humility before the admonition of the Lord to “rebuild my church’. For the moment across the planet people are catching their collective breath as they contemplate the consequences of this decoupling, albeit in a partial way, of the Chair of Peter from a Euro-centralism of the past 1000 years and the acknowledgement of the realities of world church demographics and profile.

The simplest of greetings, “Buona sera!” (good evening) his first words to the awaiting crowds in the Piazza di San Pietro, and his appeal for a prayer for his predecessor and himself before reciting the Our fFther and Hail Mary and imparting his first blessing as Pontiff might well be a presage of a different approach, a fresh face on an institution much in need of revitalisation. All the symbols are there, what will follow will demand every ounce of his energy and imagination. We give thanks for his election. We pray for his health. We look forward to the ‘camino’ (journey) we will undertake with him as our new leader and companion. Fr. Brian

QUESTION OF THE WEEK “Has no one condemned you?” John 8:10

At school: Are my opinions of others always fair or kind? At work or study: How often do I judge unfairly, or belittle others? In my family life: As a family do we give people a chance or do we condemn them?

Words for this week. Repeat frequently with love. “Jesus, giver of hope and forgiveness”
