Blessed Lord, accept this burning candle as a sign of my faith and love for You.

Like this candle, I am ready to be used in your service without asking why and to what purpose.

Even as this candle, I wish to stand in Your presence and to be consumed in the light and warmth of our

Love. Please hear my prayer and,

if it is Your will, grant my petition. But above all, make me loyal and faithful to You

in all circumstances of my life. Amen.

Did You Know? Gratitude and expressions of thankful-ness have been found to lower stress, improve one’s immune system, en-hance cardiovascular function, in-crease energy levels, reduce the likeli-

hood of depression, and even improve one’s sleep. Studies show that those who cultivate habits of thank-fulness have stronger relationships, re-port higher levels of happiness and a clearer sense of life purposes, demon-strate greater levels of generosity, and demonstrate more positive coping strat-egies in confronting both transitions and difficult situations in life. Grati-tude, it seems, is good for our health, as well as our soul.

Thanksgiving Food Collection for Little Sisters of the Poor. We will be collecting food at our Thanksgiving Day Masses AND the weekend masses following Thanks-giving, to be donated to the Little Sisters of the Poor. The Sisters have a great history of ministering to the elderly and the poor of the community. Please consider bringing an offering to the church and place it at the altar.

PANTRY ITEMS NEEDED: Canned soups, fruits and vegetables, sauerkraut, cranberry sauce, dry cereals, oatmeal, rice, pasta, canned meats, spam, tuna fish, peanut butter, jelly, pancake/waffle mix, stuffing mix, brownie mix, cake mixes, pudding, Jello, crackers, cookies, sugar, flour, salad dressings, condiments, bouillon cubes, and any low sodium or low fat/sugar free items.

RESIDENT CARE ITEMS NEEDED: Tissues, body wash, lotions, mouthwash, pump hand soap, baby wipes, Efferdent, Polident, toothpaste, shampoo, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, trash bags, small plastic bags.

PLEASE remember that this is not just a chance to clean out our cabinets of old and expired items or bi-zarre foods that we ourselves wouldn’t eat, but a chance to help others have healthy meals.

Being thankful and expressing appreciation is good for us no matter who the recipient of our grateful-ness is expressed to. It is however, most important and most beneficial to our souls when we truly feel in our hearts, a genuine gratitude and love for God for all He does for us and for just Being our God. Like any loving parent, God wants us to learn to be thankful for all the gifts He gives us. When we lack a sense of thankful-ness, we can quickly become arrogant and self-centered as if everything I have and everything I accomplish is “all because of me.” We can easily become the center of our own universe forgetting all about God.

By always trying to be thankful, we are remind-ed of how much we do have rather than feeling sorry for ourselves for what we don’t have. Some of the hap-piest and most content people I know are the ones who focus on their blessings rather than their wants. They are always thankful to God for just being alive and be-ing loved by Him.

What about the times in our lives when we real-ly don’t feel thankful for whatever reason. When we are feeling angry, sad, hurt or lonely, being able to thank God can help bring healing and peace. A sacrifice of praise is acknowledging that no matter what is happen-ing in our lives, God is still worthy of our love and praise. It is remembering our dependency on God and acknowledging our need for Him alone. It is remember-ing that we are not in control, but He is.

This Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, let us offer a sacrifice of praise by making sure to take the time to tune our hearts with our Lord and King so we re-main closer to Him.

“Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great

God, and a great King above all gods.” Psalm 95:2-3 I wish you and your families a Blessed Thanksgiving and Thank the Lord for allowing me to be a part of such a wonderful and loving parish community.

CHRIST IS KING On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It’s easy to under-stand today’s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus’ words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are pro-claiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he “has made us into a kingdom” (Revelation 1:6)—one people united in love and peace for all eternity.

PRAYER FOR FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING Dear God, on this Feast of Christ the King, we ask that you continue to guard and protect us from harm. Help us to remember the things we have in our lives to be thankful for, even though our hearts are filled with fear and uncertainty. May we appreci-ate the gifts that you have given us such as our friends, family and the sunshine that lights our day. We ask that you not allow us to be misled by fear but to focus on the coming season of Advent as we wait for the birth of your son, Jesus. For those who are separated from their families this holiday, we ask you to console them and give them peace. Help us to realize how truly blessed we are for your constant love and care and to never take an-ything for granted. Amen.

DEACON MIKE’S CORNER DEACON TIM’S BOOK & MOVIE REVIEW

"Into His Likeness" is an easy to read and engaging book that is focused on help-ing to transform the reader into a Disciple of Christ. This excellent book is written by Dr. Edward Sri, who is an internationally known theologian, author and speaker. As it says on the back cover of this book,

"Into His Likeness provides an approachable but in-depth exploration of how to live as a disciple and experi-ence the transformation Jesus wants to perform in our lives." This concept may sound interesting, but a little intimidating. Rest assured, this book is not intimidating. It clearly and easily breaks down various Bible stories and lessons from Jesus into easy to understand guidance that help the reader to become more focused on follow-ing our Lord. Most of these Bible stories are familiar to everyone, but Dr. Sri uses his knowledge as a theologian to add important insight to make them more meaningful. Just as Jesus' molding of Peter into the Rock of our Church did not happen overnight, this book lays out the road, actions and thoughts for us to take to become a more devoted follower of Jesus. I enthusiastically give this book Five Beards out of Five Beards. It has increased the desire of a few of the men that I minister to at the jail to serve the Lord more deeply and I am confident that it will do the same for you. You just need to take the first step and read this book.

~Deacon Tim Live Jesus in our hearts…..Forever!

At this time of the year I always think about, and pray for, those who are going through hard times. How is it possible to be thankful when times are tough? But that is what God asks of us. 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 says; “Pray with-out ceasing. In all circumstances give

thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Je-sus.” Now this does not mean it is God’s will for us to have these problems. We are not asked to thank God for attacks that bring sickness, poverty, fear, or any of the many tribulations we might experience in life. But ra-ther we are thanking God that He is still God. He is with us always to see us through all the possible tribula-tions that may come our way. Never allow the enemy to steal from us a thankful spirit, a spirit of joy while we are experiencing bad circumstances. Now this is not all that easy. It requires a strong faith to accomplish being thankful when the world seems to be attacking. Prayer and reading God’s word is the starting point. These lead us to know and under-stand God’s will. The sacraments, especially Reconcili-ation and Eucharist are most important. These give us the strength to battle the enemy. Surround yourself with people of God to pray with and for you. There is strength in the body of Christ. It is my prayer that we all find some way to thank God for his love and grace that he provides through the Holy Spirit. He provides all we need to have a great Thanksgiving and to love Him no matter what comes our way.

~Deacon Mike In Christ, We Are One, We Are Sent

Luminaries are a tradition in the south-west and Mexico. Christians there place white bags with lit candles inside along the walkway to their houses on Christmas Eve. They burn the candles as a guide to the Christ child — welcoming Him into their homes and announcing to the world that they are celebrating His glorious birth. This year, the Youth Ministry teens will be making Christmas Luminaries for parishioners.

Proceeds will benefit CCSP Youth Ministry. Parishioners are invited to request Luminaries in memory or honor of loved ones or for other special in-tentions. Suggested Donation is $3.00.

Make checks payable to St. Sylvester’s CYO. Your luminaries will be placed around the outside of the church and lit on Christmas Eve — burning well into the wee hours of the morning.

Please return your order form to the rectory by Sunday December 15, 2019

The bus will leave promptly from St. Albert parking lot at 6:15 pm returning from the Church of the Epiphany at 9:45 pm. Deadline to reserve seating is Tuesday, Dec. 3. A donation of $10.00 per person is payable in advance. Children under the age of 14 are free. Call the parish office at 412-884-7744 to reserve your seat on the bus.

Saturday December 7th , we begin a new chapter of our ad-venture together. We have experienced a great number of blessings thus far, and now we seek to open up the store-house of Heaven to pour out the Everlasting Love of our Lord Jesus Christ to all of our brothers and sisters.

In the past we have gathered to sing carols and praise to our Lord, and now we seek to go deeper and wider into His Love. The Cross over the Crib will be that deepening of our contemplation of His Incarnation and our Blessed Mother's yes, and the widening of our hearts as we receive His Grace to be filled to overflowing with His Spirit and His Gifts at His Coming.

The night will be filled with contemplative prayer in be-tween contemporary praise songs and contemporary Christ-mas carols.

We are grateful to God for your faithfulness and the fruit of your love in Christ Jesus, and we greatly anticipate Glorify-ing God with you at Epiphany Church on December 7!
