SPECIAL COLLECTION This weekend we will have a Special Collection for the people of Kerala India. They are experiencing historic flooding and devastating loss. The Catholic Church in India, The Heralds of Good News Priests and CRS are asking for your help to bring relief to their suffering.

Parking OPD has been receiving calls from our neighbors about people parking in front of their driveways and in their grass during some Masses. We would like to ask every-one to be mindful of driveways, fire hydrants, and yellow marked zones when parking on the streets near the church. We want to be good neighbors and avoid situa-tions where the OPD has to have cars towed away.

Happy Labor Day! This Holiday is an opportunity for us to thank God for the work that we do or have done throughout our lives. Whether it is (or was) a public job of some kind or working in the home caring for one’s family, it has been our participation in the on-going work of God’s creation. This day is also an invitation for us to pray for those who are unemployed or underem-ployed. Enjoy the holiday as we bring summer to a close. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal is the docu-ment that lays out the directives regarding the celebration of Mass. It covers everything from the duties of the priest and other ministers to the arrangement and furnish-ing of the Church and altar, vestments to be worn etc… One of the directives is that, as far as possible, everyone should receive Holy Communion from hosts consecrated at that Mass, rather than from the tabernacle. Here is ex-actly what is prescribed: It is most desirable that the faithful, just as the priest himself is bound to do, receive the Lord’s Body from hosts consecrated at the same Mass and that, in the instances when it is permitted, they partake of the chalice (cf. no. 283), so that even by means of the signs Communion will stand out more clearly as a participation in the sacrifice actually being celebrated. I have been trying to abide by this directive and therefore have instructed the Extraordinary Ministers of Communion not to use hosts from the tabernacle un-less necessary. I realize this practice has caused a bit of angst for some. Admittedly it is difficult to follow this prescription because we never know for sure how many people will be at a particular Mass, especially on week-ends. As a result, on occasion a Communion Min-ister may run out of hosts and have to retrieve more from another Minister or from the tabernacle. That is not a major problem so I encourage everyone to “go with the flow” and not to get anxious about this. With time we will iron out any wrinkles in the process. We are trying not to have hundreds of hosts left in the tabernacle which has happened on a few occasions. Since arriving here I have been so edified by the quality of our liturgical pray-er and the dedication and commitment of all our liturgical ministers and musicians. Thanks to all of you. Fr. John

Sophia Award Congratulation to this year’s Sophia Award winners representing Immaculate Parish. Buzz and Patsy Van Meter will receive this award next Sunday, September 9th at 2:00 pm at Saint Stephen Cathedral. For many years Patsy was organist at Immaculate parish. And after retiring, she still continued to minister by playing at daily Mass for feast days. She continues to share her God-given gift by playing once a month at St. Pius X. Buzz assists practically every day at daily Mass as a server. And when younger they served on many committees within the parish and the school. You could not find two more faith-filled humble servants than the Van Meters. We’re happy to present this wonderful couple for the Sophia Award.
