Fr. Kevin Poecking Administrator, OPV Catholic Churches

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine… All of us have probably sung those words at some time in our life, either to children, or as children. The theme of the song comes from the words we hear in the Gospel this weekend when Jesus says, “You are the light of the world.” In Matthew 5:14. In John 8:14, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world”. So, which is it? Is Jesus the light, or are we the light? Well, there’s no reason it can’t be both! I preached at a recent school Mass and used the image of a mirror to explain this. When we hold a mirror up to a candle or a light, it reflects the light, and we can see the same image and same light in the mirror that we see with our own eyes. The closer the mirror gets to the candle or the light, the more it reflects the light. This is true for our relationship with Jesus. As Christians, we are more like mirrors. We are not the light itself, but we can reflect the light of Christ into the world the more we stay close to him. The more we stay close to him like a mirror to light, the more we reflect Christ visibly in the world. Staying close to Christ means spending time in prayer, at Mass and at home, studying the Scriptures and the teachings of our faith and living our faith as best we can. Let’s continue to work together to stay close to Christ and reflect His light, our light, into the world around us that can sometimes seem so dark to many. I have some good news to share this weekend. We have a new staff person joining us this week. Meredith Fraschi will join our Faith Formation staff and focus on our middle school youth. Meredith has been a youth minister in the state of Washington as part of the Jesuit Volunteer Corp, a volunteer assistant youth minister in Butler County, PA and has taught

Religious Education classes as a catechist for middle school students. Meredith is working on her Master’s degree in Theology and wanted to shift to full time ministry. Meredith will work closely with Kristin Consuegra and Stephanie Williams this year in learning how our parishes and ministry function. Meredith will be responsible for Middle School Faith Formation and Middle School Youth Ministry. She and her husband have one daughter, about five months old. With the addition of Meredith, Kristin Consuegra will be more available to minister to our high school youth and now also young adults, replacing our former Young Adult Minister. Stephanie Williams will focus on kindergarten through fifth grade faith formation. She would like to add Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program for younger children in our parishes sometime soon. These three women will work closely together as a team to ensure a seamless transition from each age group through school years to adult members of the parish community. Meredith will be at some of our religious education classes and youth ministry events next weekend. Please welcome Meredith Fraschi to our parish staff and our community when you see her!

In Christ’s love, Father Kevin

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

READING I IS 58:7-10

Thus says the LORD: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer, you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am! If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday. RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 112:4-5, 6-7, 8-9

R. The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.

Light shines through the darkness for the upright; he is gracious and merciful and just. Well for the man who is gracious and lends, who conducts his affairs with justice.

R. The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.

He shall never be moved; the just one shall be in everlasting remembrance. An evil report he shall not fear; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD.

R. The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.

His heart is steadfast; he shall not fear. Lavishly he gives to the poor; His justice shall endure forever; his horn shall be exalted in glory.

R. The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.

READING 2 1 COR 2:1-5

When I came to you, brothers and sisters, proclaiming the mystery of God, I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling, and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of Spirit and power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. JN 8:12

I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. GOSPEL MT 5:13-16

Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; It is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

LA ADORACIÓN EUCARÍSTICA (Carta del Cardenal Norberto Rivera, primera parte)

….Continued

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL DONATIONS

For many years, the St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Society has served the poor in our area, mostly in Oakmont, Verona and Penn Hills. Envelopes in the pews at St. Irenaeus have been used to collect funds for the SVdP society to serve those communities. For the past few years, envelopes were opened by parish money counters and sometimes those funds accidentally went through parish bank accounts and a check was then given to SVdP from the parish. This caused some confusion, so now all donations made to SVdP using the labeled envelope will be given directly to SVdP Society for collecting and counting separately. When envelopes are received in parish collections, they will be separated, then sealed in tamper-proof bags by parish money counters and given then to members of the St. Vincent de Paul. Checks should be made out to St. Vincent de Paul Society when using those envelopes only. The SVdP Society at St. Irenaeus is part of a Diocesan non-profit organization and is not a direct ministry of the parish. Nevertheless, the Society helps people in need in our area. They are looking to expand their ministry to cover all five of our parishes and will be seeking new members who would like to learn this charitable cause and ministry.

Thanks to all those who continue to purchase the grocery gift cards. This is a simple, but very effective way to help our school. To those of you who have never tried this program, won’t you consider beginning to help? Many of our parishioners have scaled back their budgets due to the economy, however, the need to purchase gas, prescription drugs and food never ends. Please consider purchasing Giant Eagle, Community and Labriolas gift cards. These cards are sold every week after all Masses and during the week at the Parish Office. Our school receives 5% back on Giant Eagle and Community and 10% back on Labriolas at no additional cost to you.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL DONATIONS For many years, the St. When SVdP envelopes are received in parish collections, they will be separated, then sealed in tamper-proof bags by parish money counters and given to members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING STUDENTS FOR ACHIEVING HONOR ROLL STATUS DURING THE 2ND QUARTER:

DISPOSAL OF PALMS:

While last year’s Palm branches are used to make the Ashes for the beginning of Lent, it is a

messy process and we prefer to purchase the ashes from companies that do this for us.

Please put any blessed palms from last year or this year in your favorite garden at home. Do not bring your old palms to the Church. Thank you.

CHURCH CALENDARS

Church calendars are no longer available in the churches. If you are still of need of a calendar,

they can be picked up at the church rectories.

Winter Bugs! & Cry Rooms

Please note that with the annual winter concerns about influenza and other viruses, in addition to the global coronavirus scare, no one should be offended if the person standing near you does not want to shake hands at the Sign of Peace. They may have low immunity due to age or medical concerns, but we want them to feel comfortable at welcome at church. Please note also that CRY ROOMS are not meant for older folks or others who are ill and don’t want to be in a crowd. If you don’t have young children or special needs adults, you should NOT be in a cry room during Mass. Cry rooms should always be available to welcome those who occasionally have fussy children and still want to be at Mass with us, even for short moments during Mass. So, please don’t take their space! Ushers should kindly ask unaccompanied adults to sit in the church and NOT in a cry room. St. John the Baptist has a cry room for families, and also a balcony for those who seek to sit separately. We also livestream every 9 a.m. Mass. If you are ill or worried about traveling in the winter conditions, consider the many options to worship God in our community while respecting the needs of others.
