THIS ISSUE
If anyone had told me on 1st August what lay ahead of
me that month, I wouldn't have believed them; but then,
on that day, the Centaur did not exist—it was not even a
glint in my eye. Yet, on 2nd August, out of the blue, the
idea of launching our own chapter was born and a mere
twelve days later, we launched. In fact, it's all been a bit
of a whirlwind.
In the space of just one month we have decided upon our
vessel type (twice), named her, designed our logo with
two versions—one for printed matter and another for
patches, sourced patches, opened a bank account,
worked out ways to fund our first
projects, organised two meets in
September, produced our first
newsletter, written our handbook
and bylaws, produced a website
and recruited no less than six-
teen crew.
All in all, I can honestly say that I
had not expected all of this in
such a short space of time.

Space Station Centaur
MEET THE COMMAND TEAM
Nor had I anticipated such overwhelming support, all of which has touched
me deeply.
The focus of the ship is fun, and we seem to be having plenty of that. We've
had a few puzzles and games and have just undertaken our first jump in our
redesigned Ferengi ship, the Golden Slime. It's a great opportunity for the
crew to don their alter-egos and flex their imaginations.
Unscripted role play can be such good fun as there are no wrong answers. It
is as unpredictable as real life itself and you just go with the flow. As to our
first foray, it was brilliant and there are several little storylines developing.
Holly and Erika are making contact with what could be our descendants,
while Emma is saving the strangely domesticated wolf population. Ian is de-
veloping a hazmat suit, I assume to investigate the gaseous anomaly and
Tony is being deeply practical and scientific about it all. I look forward to the
next instalment. The added GIFs and imagery are superb. A huge thank you
to Ian and Tony for that.
Well, I could go on for ages, but I don't want to hold
up production, so I'll call it a day. To close, though, all
I would add in that I am so pleased—and proud, to
have such a great crew on this adventure with me. I
cannot thank you all enough.
Jolan tru.

MEET THE COMMAND TEAM
Hi, I‟m Lieutenant Commander Erika Stroem,
Second Officer aboard the Space Station Cen-
taur. I joined Starfleet in June 2015 where I was
the xenologist aboard the Stargazer and as I
also studied the human mind, I went on to be
the ships Counsellor on the Merlin. But I have
decided to put my efforts more into research
and took to joining the Centaur who deal more
in this avenue. I am still Head of Counselling, but am honoured to have
been given the position of Second Officer.
GREETINGS FROM THE SECOND OFFICER &
HEAD OF COUNSELLING LCDR ERIKA STROHM
Hi I'm Commander Colin Barrow the First Of-
ficer of the Space Station Centaur. I became
a member of SFI back in 2012 and joined a
chapter where I held various roles from navi-
gator to XO. I then transferred across to the
USS MERLIN earlier this year where I be-
came Second Officer. Now I serve the crew
as First Officer on our new chapter the Space
Station Centaur.
HELLO FROM THE FIRST OFFICER

MEET THE SENIOR TEAM
Need 20th century attire for your next tem-
poral away mission? Found that your shuttle
is running low on it‟s ration supply? Or is
your phaser malfunctioning and needing re-
placement? Whatever supplies you need,
come see me. I am often found in one of the
cargo bays but I can be anywhere in the ship
as resources are needed in every depart-
ment and I‟m in charge of allocation. I also
have a knack for holo technology and can
assist with product testing when needed. Oh,
and I like cats.
HELLO FROM THE QUARTERMASTER
TARIN TEAGUE
Jolan tru, in an attempt to bring the under-
standing and technology of the Romulan
Artificial Gravity Well to the Federation, I
have accepted a transfer to the Senior
Team and accepted the assignment of the
role of Head of Research and Development
on SS Centaur. R&D has four Decks, XV to
Deck XVIII. We also have the inherited
head of the house of Restarc on Deck XVII
doing independent research in his Lab, if
you're into R&D there is plenty of room
available to you to join our department.
A WORD FROM THE HEAD OF R&D

Space Station Centaur
WORDS FROM THE MOTHERSHIP
Hello to everyone on Space Station Centaur My name is Daniel Adams, and
for those who don‟t know me, I am the Commanding Officer of the USS Star-
gazer. The Stargazer is Region 20‟s mothership, and the longest serving
chapter in Region 20.
Many of those on your roster started off amongst our ranks. You‟ve already
spun off into your own crew, your own community, and its one that the Star-
gazer is proud to support.
When I started in Region 20, over 7 years ago, there were only two chapters.
Since that time, the number of chapters and personnel has grown. Region 20
is growing into a bright and vibrant place, and a big part of that success is our
chapters each one offering its own experience for its members to compliment
what happens at Region and Fleet level.
The command crew of the Centaur consists of some of my favourite people
within the Trek family. I wish I could name
everyone, instead I will just say that you
are what Trek fandom is all about. Going
out there, having fun above all else.
The shakedown process takes a few
months, however it is my sincere hope that
the bonds of friendship and collaboration
transcend this period, and we continue our
journey.
To the adventure my friends!
HELLO TO EVERYONE ON SPACE STATION CENTAUR

Space Station Centaur
„Joined the Star Trek community after a lifetime following the series on the TV.
My interest is in understanding and applying the fictional Romulan Artificial
Gravity Well, through the abstract math of magic square constant sharing.
Looking forward to making a concerted effort to complete experiments and proto-
type during my secondment. „
„Holly asked in the woman's expat group is anyone else liked Star Trek and next
thing you know my shuttle is docked at the station‟:)
„There are many Nations of this world, but, at this time, I find the most wonderful
nation is the Imagi-nation, there you can escape into a world and or a time of
your choosing where you can be anything and anyone you want to be, away from
the world of today where nations are bitching and warring with each other, it's
nice to escape to a world where such things don't exist.
I'll be honest most of my experiences of Starfleet were crappy, so when the Cap-
tain invited me to come aboard the Centaur I was a bit unsure, but I have spoken
with Captain in the past and known her to be kind, cheery and of good heart so I
decided I should give Captain, her station and her crew a shot so here I am. So
far I am happy to report my experiences on the Centaur have been wonderful,
and I love the company too, I hope we can all become good friends and that that
friendship will last the longest time, not just in our imaginary/real world on the
station but in our real world off the station too.‟

„There is a special bond with the right crew that we all feel when we watch Star
Trek. We see it in the characters, no matter their differences...like Spock and
McCoy who are such opposites but have one of the closest bonds in all of the sto-
ries. It's nice to know we're all here for each other.
I see the creativity and good-natured spirit of our crew and I can see it overflowing
into our real world as well as the world of imagination we create. We are a beacon
for creative minds, inquisitive minds, and most of all diversity and acceptance. That
is what the Centaur is for me.‟

MEETUPS *FOR PEOPLE AFRAID OF MEETUPS*
A Message for First-Timers by Erica Strohm
I don't know how many of you know my background, so sorry to anyone who will
hear this again…
I was a hermit for 18 years, scared to go anywhere in case I bumped into any-
one who was part of why I was like it in the first place...
There then began a time when I realised how much of my life I was wasting and
had to try and figure how I could get myself out and about again?
My first thoughts was "What do I love"... Easy, the answer was Sci-fy/science
fact... So the next stage was wondering where could I go for this? I tried to go to
the space centre in Leicester several times and failed terribly... especially as it
was Leicester, as all the bad things that had happened to me in the past, had
happened there...So silly to try really!
Going to a convention had always been on my bucket list and I discussed this
with my family…
The following year, they put me right in at the deep end and bought me a ticket
for my birthday to a fantastic convention... Where? Only bloody Germany???
What the hell were they thinking?... How the hell was I going to get there?...
They had also arranged for my sister to go with me...
I wont go into all the details of the journey as it would take too long, but believe
me, it was epic and cost me 23 of my supply of diazapam (and that was just to
get there)... But I did it and I loved it…
It gave me the want and need to go to more conventions... I found a convention
the following year in the UK... Not too big and it concentrated on sci-fi rather than
the comic-cons which deal in everything...
It was FCD events ... Big problem though... it was in Leicester... Could I do it?

MEETUPS *FOR PEOPLE AFRAID OF MEETUPS*
A Message for First-Timers (cont.) by Erica Strohm
Yes I did... and it was the best thing I ever did... I met loads of fantastic new
friends with the same interest as I have... But the best thing was, so many had
similar problems or other problems which gave them empathy to mine... And
even though I was in Leicester, I felt safe and amongst people who understood.
I know I am not alone in problems going places and others suffer the same for
possibly different reasons... They also finish up not going mainly because of the
unknown... But I would assure everyone who has problems with stress/anxiety/
panic attacks etc...In fact, any disability you have. These people do not judge,
these people understand, these people care…
I cannot say enough good about them... it would take me too long... But if I had
not gone to this event, I would not have had a go on their raffle... then I would
not have won a prize of a years subscriptions to Starfleet and then I would not
have been the Counsellor of this station telling you all about my story…
So, if you too have any similar reasons which prevents you from going to this, or
any other event... Come and talk to me...

Accelerated Shakedown!
We‟ve been approved for accelerated shakedown, which has knocked
4 months off the normal 9 month shakedown period. This is the maxi-
mum reduction we could have got so we must be doing something
right! So after 5 months we can apply for commissioning. Exciting!!!!
The SS Centaur welcomes Sarahleigh Mackenzie Rich-
ardson as our Head Nurse. All staff must submit to a full
physical so if you haven‟t done so already, please report
to Sarahleigh in the sickbay ASAP!

A Tactical Introduction
My name is Emma and I make a great cuppa. I am half Vul-
can half Betazoid which can
cause a lot of issues as you
can imagine. I recently trans-
ferred from the USS Merlin in
order to embark on this new
adventure. I run the Tactical department so if you
ever feel the urge, I more than welcome visitors,
it can get a bit lonely in the Tactical bay.

The annual Perseid Meteor Shower has once again come and gone. The
sometimes vibrant spectacle occurs from around the 23 July to 20 August,
and several from the Centaur were out trying to get a glimpse on the clear
nights. The greatest number were expected on the 12th but viewers had to
contend with bright waning gibbous moon seen below.

Supporting Charities
One of the things members of STARFLEET are good at
is doing good works throughout the universe. With this
in mind, we recognise one of our own Kevin „Hightower‟
Baker. Over the years, Kevin has a played a part in the
success of the annual Starbase 24 banquet, from
which the proceeds go to Macmillan Cancer Support as
well as two animal charities. Well done Kevin and
Starbase 24!

The vessel is a small Ferengi cargo carrier that the Captain won in a tongo game. It's been overhauled and checked out by STARFLEET engineers and all seems to be working well. The jump drive had been installed and we are about to embark … Having checked that the crew are aboard, the GOLDEN SLIME breaks dock and makes her way into deep space. Having assumed a safe distance from Space Station Centaur, the Captain initiates the jump drive. There is a grinding of metal and a lurching that the inertial dampeners cannot fully compensate for. The crew lists drunkenly to one side and then, as the Golden Slime steadies herself, the crew regain their sea—I mean sky legs and look to the sensors to ascertain their position. Sensors reveal that the planet is of a similar size to Earth and the po-sitioning and size of the neigh-bouring planets reveal that it is Earth. However, while there are several very large cities, the planet appears uninhabited with lower animals encroaching on the cities and no sign of humanoid life forms. Pollution levels are also non-existent suggesting that any industry ceased eons ago, and the temporal sensor reads 12068. We appear to have found Earth in a postapoca-lyptic era or, perhaps, a mirror universe or another alternate. At this stage, we don't know. Beaming down to the planet, they find themselves in a dense forested area with buildings in the distance. Holly manages to land in a pile of dung. She picks up readings of domestic animals, a diversity of wildlife and a few unknown readings. Ian checks his disruptor and switches on the Geiger counter mounted on its bar-rel. The Commanding Officer, like all good captains, has remained aboard the ship to monitor and advise. So far, she can't see anything bigger than a rabbit in their vicinity.

The Maiden Voyage of the GOLDEN SLIME: Day 1
Picking up a faint call from the buildings, the landing party head over to check it out. At that moment, a ball of fire lights the sky heading upwards out of orbit. The captain activates the shields while an analysis is undertaken. It appears to be giant puff of gas that has been ignited. The stench it emits is nauseating. The Geiger bleeps angrily when a vapour appears—a sickly, green colour. Erika wonders if it is some sort of entity, and the landing party dons breathing equip-ment to combat the odour. On the ship, the CO analyses the fireball and reports that it appears to be a natural phenomenon, although it does have some strange readings that could indicate that it was a targeted blast of natural discharge of some kind.
My god, thinks the captain. Did this planet just fart? Ian continues to stalk through the forest enjoying the damp cool air and the bird song, reminded of more isolated Klingon colonies, while Holly is remind-ed of Dagobah. Reaching the buildings, they are not in
good shape. There are a few old crates about and a dusty console behind a ta-ble. Opening the crate, Ian finds tinned food. Tony opens one of the cans and green slime comes out of it. Ian deduces that the place is either a barracks or shelter of some kind and suggests that it might be a safe fall back point and sets up a perimeter. Holly examines the console. It is inoperable, but there's an indistinguishable pa-per-type square there … a photograph perhaps. Holly hears a sudden noise coming from a distance, like someone's dropped a suit of armour down a long shaft. Her tricorder indicates that there is a life form about 20m south-west and that it appears to be within the building complex. Emma, meanwhile, has wandered off. She hears the noise too. It was nearer to her so phasers are set to stun. She discovers some sort of wolf. It hasn't seen her yet her yet but is hunting and heading towards the others. Emma shouts a

warning and the crew scatter. Holly trips over a crate which breaks open spilling a pile of bleached, aged bones. They are humanoid! Transfixed by the wolves, Emma doesn't register this. She is getting the feeling that the wolf is leading her somewhere. It knows she is following it and appears unafraid. The wolf leads her to their lair where she finds an injured cub and tends to its wounds. It looks as though it has been caught in a snare. Having tended its wounds, when she leaves, but the wolves follow. Erika, meanwhile, exploring the other crates finds jellylike eggs with very small embryos inside that look humanoid. Multiple life signs are detected moving in on the landing party and Holly reports that she can just make them out. Small, gangly creatures with tiny heads and very wild looking moustaches and facial hair. One is in the tree about 10m away. Erika can see them too and one of them is pointing and shouting at Holly in an unfamiliar tongue. Looking at them, Ian reckons they are related to the crate embryos Erika found. One of them lassoes Holly around the arm. They're strong but not as strong as
her. She gives the rope a tug and one falls out of the tree right into her arms. Its breathing is heavy but looks alright. It's talking again and the language sounds familiar but Holly just can't place it and all the translators can make out is something about big danger. Holly notices that the little guy has a tattoo on his right wrist. It's really odd as it looks a little bit like a Starfleet insignia. Erika is fascinated. Evolution can work in funny old ways and she wonders what humanoids would turn out like after thousands of years.

Reports of our ‘Outs and Abouts’
The Maiden Voyage of the GOLDEN SLIME: Day 1 (cont.)
The little guy keeps saying there's big danger, and points to the sky, but we‟re
not picking up anything. He seems content to sit here with Holly.
Analysis of the gas ball reveals that it is made up predominantly methane, but
propelled under high pressure from fissures in the earth. Ian starts to think about
developing an extreme environment survival suit so that he can investigate fur-
ther. In the meantime, a slave to his stomach, he sets up a campfire and starts
to cook a small snack from the emergency
rations. Tony wonders if there is a library
amid the ruins.
Assembled around the campfire, the crew
regroup while Ian pops back to the building
to take a closer look at the console. He
takes out a scanner and attaches a probe
to the outer casing.
With the night drawing in, the Captain calls
an end to the
day's mission. This will give the crew an opportunity
to regroup, analyse their data, share findings and re-
turn tomorrow.
As they are about to leave, the "little dude" does a
strange dance and seems quite excitable and gives
Holly a flower before beaming up. Now the crew have
soil, air, plant, blood and poop samples to analyse in
addition to the readings and samples Ian took from
the crates as well as one of the eggs, which he puts
into stasis in the sickbay.
That‟s the end of Day 1 but the journey continued!

The Squared frame of atoms, an abstract view of the Periodic Table's
inert gasses and their electron shells by Tony Burr
Jolan tru!
As a Romulan alien to your world, it puzzles me that a square representation
of Atoms full electron valence shells are very hard to come by on your com-
puter system or as illustrations. It‟s a bit weird that it doesn't appear anywhere
I've looked.
Looking at how your electron shells are notated, we add nothing and divide by
two. Nothing is the atoms nucleus!
To assist the Federation in their understanding of the unified field, I will pre-
sent the straight series used by the Star Empire's Kindergarten, to the Captain
of the USS Centaur at the Launch party on the 15 September.

INSPIRATION STATION
The Joys and Woes of an Arboretum By Anni Potts
When I first took command of Space Station Centaur, I was quite over-
whelmed by the size of the arboretum. With a diameter of over 800m, it's a
beautiful space filled with flora and fauna of all kind, and at the centre lies the
beautiful, if not ambitiously named, Centaur Village, or the top of it anyway.
Centaur village is more of a glorified shopping mall filled with shops, restau-
rants and other eateries filling a total of six floors. The top floor opens out onto
the arboretum and houses a small selection of shops: coffee bar, gift shop,
quaint little wine bar, that sort of thing, creating an air more akin to a little
country town square. It all sounds quite idyllic but it's not without its own prob-
lems. Take this morning.
As the station turned and the morning rays from the nearby sun cast its beams
through my window, I mused at how, with the twittering of birdsong, it was just
like at home.
"Oh, crap!" I shouted, realising that this was a space station. "We've got an
escapee."
Fumbling on my uniform, I alerted the bridge and within half an hour a small
team of us were wandering the corridors, nets in hand, stalking our little feath-
ered friend. Once more I cursed the fact that sensors and transporters were
down and made a mental note to chase up engineering regarding progress.
Holly led the way, being an expert on wildlife, and three hours later, we had a
beautiful, pink breasted chaffinch in custody. Seriously, it would have been
easier to catch a Ferengi with his hand in the till.
Especially pleasant, though, was the release. We all popped up to the arbore-
tum, like a bunch of school kids on an outing, and released Mr Biggs (named
after Ronnie Biggs, a train-robber who eluded capture for many years appar-
A platform for our creativity...

ently) back into the wild. We all cheered ... until the little sod flew straight back
down the stairwell and back into the depths of the village. We all stood
around, looking somewhat crestfallen, our gazes focused on the stairs.
"Okay, guys," I said. "Round two ..."
Trying to organise ourselves more proficiently, we contacted Engineering who
were able to erect a species sensitive force field. Apparently, it also emits an
ultra-sonic signal that will deter birds approaching (I wonder how the Ferengi
will fare with that one.) and just ninety minutes later, Mr Biggs was in custody
again.
So, while the arboretum is a wonderful space, it brings with it a completely
new set of challenges for us to tackle. It's not just birds either. We have a
huge selection of plants, and plants require pollination, and that means bees.
We also have a selection of carnivorous plants. Don't worry, no triffids but we
do have specimens like the Venus Flytrap and various Pitcher plants. These
all require insects to feed upon as well—and insects are even more adept at
escape than the humble chaffinch.
To conclude this report, Security is very busy estab-
lishing new methods and protocols to ensure we
have no more problems with rogue birds, animals
and insects from the arboretum. I don't think they're
very happy about it. Bless, they were trained to deal
with smugglers and thieves rather than zoo keeping.
I almost feel like hiring a couple of bandits to give
them a project more suited to their skill set!

I am Chief of Medical
On board a Starfleet ship
Come and see my sick-bay
It will be worth the trip.
My Doctors and my Nurses
Will care for all your pain
They will not leave your side
Until you‟re right again
But-I‟m-not like any old Doctor …
As, I am based in space
So-it‟s not just humans I see to…
I deal with any race
I come-across weird diseases
That can really, drive me insane
And I need to find an antidote
To make the crew better again
Captains ill? But Captains stubborn
“Don‟t worry, I‟m on my way”
“So go to bed and do as you‟re told
Cause I out-rank you today” …
In simple, I deal with all sorts
Healing, surgery, concoctor
Or should I make it easier…
Damn it… I‟m a Doctor.

I love living in the new space station and I like living near to Kevin and
Ian. Kevin lets me help look after the dinosaurs and Ian is my fighting
training partner and we spar every day and night.
My sister Rosie wants to come and visit and maybe I can show her
round.
I have been training a lot for my security role, but I need someone to
show me what to press on the phasers to put it on stun so I don't hurt
anyone properly.
Grandma said I can take some exams too when I'm a bit older and she
said we will be getting a patch and I can't wait to stick it on my new uni-
form.
