It is apparent the best way to describe the difference between ‘trash and treasure’ is PRIDE! The Wild and Scenic Kern River is one of the finest rivers in the state of California and it needs to be protect- ed. Keepers of the Kern have seen a need for just this and have created an organic movement from the ground up to address an extremely pressing issue. That issue being abuse and overuse by the public who recreate here. The ecological balance has been damaged through the careless and ne- glectful actions of those who do not care for and respect the land. The Kern River Valley exists because of its waters and without those waters, the river and its people could fall to a level of economic depression and excess pollution. Keepers, and their dedicated volunteers, logged in over 3,000 volunteer hours and traveled well over 5,000 miles throughout this past year. The upper Wild and Scenic Kern River, Keyesville, Isabella Lake and numerous roadsides have been carefully and passionately cleaned of trash, gar- bage, human waste, and graffiti on a regular weekly basis. The efforts of Keepers of the Kern encapsulate the vision to “think global, act local.” The unique aspect of the orga- nization is the creation of something where nothing existed before, and it is working! The continued partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Kern River Conservancy and many others guarantees a bright future of continued success and growth. People are noticing the transformation that is taking place despite hurdles and other obstacles that have shown themselves as we clean it up…one bag at a time! Keepers of the Kern had a very successful 2017 and are looking forward to an even better 2018 thanks to so many sponsors, supporters, and dedicated volunteers. Keepers have worked alongside local businesses, governmental agencies, and the communities of the Kern River Valley to restore and assist in maintaining the richness of this magical area. The movement Keepers has embarked upon is receiving an increased awareness and participation every day. The number of volunteers has increased, and the cooperative effort has brought about the willingness of campers of all ages to jump right in to join the groups as they make their appearance with trash bags and pickers in hand. All it takes is one to begin the process of giving those who recreate here in the Kern River Valley a better foundation on how to care for the land which belongs to all of us. In order to ensure the health of our river and its land, it is going to take everyone, working collectively and with pas- sion. By doing so, it will truly be an exciting and wonderful experience brought about by the combination of love and respect. We must remain reunited in protecting the diversity and delicate biological environment that surrounds us. © Kern Valley Sun Kern River Valley Visitor’s Guide 5. “One Person Can Make A Difference...Together We Can Make It Right!”

Going into our fifth year, the trash warriors continue to right the wrong done to our beautiful Wild and Scenic Kern River. With our adopt a campground program in effect the problem has improved but the trash, garbage and human waste are still a huge problem. We continue the fight collecting tons from the river, the shores of Isabella Lake and the Historic Keyesville area. Come join us... VOLUNTEER!

Consumer AlertIt really disappoints me

to have to write this article during the holiday season. But I feel compelled to do so.

It seems like the Medicare and Social Security fraud-sters are out in full force during this time of giving. Not only have they resorted to bogus telephone calls, somehow using 760 num-bers on the caller ID, but even pirating local names to the caller ID. They have also made their way onto Craigslist.

Both Social Security and Medicare are under attack, prompting the Acting Inspec-tor General of Social Security to issue a fraud warning last week. Here’s his warning:

“The Office of Inspector General (OIG) continues to receive reports from across the country about fraudu-lent phone calls from people claiming to be from SSA. Recent reports have indicat-ed that unknown callers are using increasingly threaten-ing language in these calls. The callers state, due to im-proper or illegal activity with a citizen’s Social Security number (SSN) or account, a citizen will be arrested or face other legal action if they fail to call a provided phone number to address the issue. This is a scam; citizens should not engage with these calls or provide any personal information.”

“Unfortunately, scammers will try anything to mislead and harm innocent people, including scaring them into thinking something is wrong with their Social Security

account and they might be arrested. The OIG recently warned that some of these impersonation calls have ‘spoofed’ SSA’s national customer service phone number, displaying 1-800-772-1213 as the incoming number on caller ID. The Acting Inspector Gener-al urges citizens to avoid providing information such as your SSN or bank ac-count numbers to unknown persons over the phone or internet unless you are cer-tain of who is receiving it. If you receive a suspicious call from someone alleging to be from SSA, you should report that information to the OIG at 1-800-269-0271 or online as https://oig.ssa.gov/report.”

The fact is that similar calls are being made in the name of Medicare, and the annoying robo-calls are at epidemic levels during this season of giving. I have talked to dozens of Medi-care age people during the last two months who have discussed the problem. In fact, I talked to one lady a few weeks ago who said she is receiving up to five calls a day from a 760 prefix, offer-ing free Medicare supplies, some of them tantalizingly expensive. Of course she doesn’t answer them, but they are, nevertheless, quite annoying.

One reason for concern

with Medicare enrollees, is that recently Californians began receiving new Medi-care cards without the So-cial Security number being

on them…and although it is a great move, it can lead to confusion, and possible doubt when scammers start in.

And…I thought we were done with this one, but it still is being worked. Ten years ago, I was made aware of the bogus calls that come from “a grandson,’ stating that, “Grandma/Grandpa, I am in jail in Canada for a DUI I got last night, and need you to send $800 to such and such a number/place.”

I suppose this has been going on right along, but I wasn’t aware that it was still being used until a lady reported to me that she had received such a call just a month ago and had ignored it. So, the scam technique is still alive and well with per-haps a new set of grandpar-ents being tested.

As I said at the begin-ning, it disappoints me to write such an article during Americans’ greatest giving season, but when the In-spector General sends such a depressing message, older Americans must be on their sharpest lookout.
