Welcome to the 2015 Central New York Dental Conference. The largest and only dental congress in upstate New York. On Thursday, September 10 through Friday, September 11, we will be hosting close to 1,000 health care professionals at THE ONCENTER in Syracuse, NY, offering once again, the very best in continuing education and technical exhibits.

Thursday evening, we are offering the courses our members rely upon us to provide annually to stay current and comply with licensure and liability in New York State, such as NYS Mandated Infection Control and Risk Management.

UPDATED: Due to circumstances beyond our control, Dr. Crossley has had to cancel his speaking engagement with us. It is unfortunate, but we have retained an excellent speaker to fill the void. Dr. Nasser Barghi, a personal favorite, will be speaking on All-Ceramic Restorations 2015: Clinical Steps. You will not be disappointed.

The esteemed Inspired Hygiene Group is back with Dental Hygienist Stacy McCauley. Stacy will lecture on two topics. Systemic Inflammation And Obesity and Consequences in Dentistry. Stacy remains on the cutting edge of dentistry while an instructor at UNC Chapel Hill.

For those of you that need some stress management skills, Dr. Ben Bernstein will be here to teach the 9 Essential Tools for Reducing Stress in the Dental Office.

Your committee has worked many hours to develop and bring you this unparalleled program. We urge you to participate in this educational experience and to visit with our exhibitors who have supported our profession so many times. They’re here to enthusiastically demonstrate new products and technologies from around the world.

#1: NYS Mandated Dental Office Infection ControlSpeaker: Terrence Thines, DDS, MSThursday, September 10, 2015 • 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm3 MCE credits

Infection Control in the 21st CenturyDental office infection control has evolved since the 1992 OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard and the 1994 New York State mandatory training requirement were introduced. Practices have continued to evolve and incorporate periodic updates from federal, state and local advisory and regulatory agencies (ADA, CDC, FDA, EPA, DEC, OSAP etc.). In addition, new infection control products and materials have been introduced over the last two decades. The net result of this progress is, Infection Control in the 21st Century, a broad-based, comprehensive approach encompassing all aspects of dental office operations.

• Participants in this course will understand and be familiar with the most recent CDC recommendations for dental office infection control.

• Participation in this course complies with the annual OSHA training requirement.• Course completion fulfills NYS Department of Health and State Education Department expectations for

dental healthcare professionals.

Innovations in digital dentistry and high-strength all-ceramic systems in conjunction with advanced CAD/CAM technology provide us with more opportunity to offer esthetic and function not only in the esthetic zone, but also in high stress posterior occlusion. Each system requires specific tooth preparation, laboratory communication, surface conditioning for luting. Current ceramic primers and luting cements have made these a reality.

All-Ceramic Restorations in 2015 is an in-depth look at concepts, procedures and products to enhance the durability of these restorations.

Course ObjectiveThis course is designed to provide participants with practical information on indications, selection, tooth preparation, laboratory communication and bonding of current types of all ceramic restorations in light of current scientific and clinical information. Failures of esthetic restorations and steps for intra-oral repairs will be discussed.

• All ceramic restorations in 2015• Indications and outcomes • Clinical considerations of zirconia and IPS e.max lithium disilicate restorations• Minimal invasive procedures with CAD/CAM zirconia restorations • Bonding and cementing zirconia restorations in light of current scientific information• Current status of luting cements for all-ceramic restorations• Failures of esthetic restorations; contributing factures. • Intra-oral repair of aesthetic restorations

#4: Hot & Bothered AND Big Patients, Big ConsequencesSpeaker: Stacy McCauley, RDH, MSFriday, September 11, 2015 8:30 am - 4:30 pm6 MCE Credits

Hot & Bothered: Science & Strategies for Managing Oral & Systemic Inflammation (AM session) Are you “sick and tired” of your patients being “sick and tired” as a result of their poor health? Shockingly, 70% of all deaths in the U.S. are caused by chronic disease, with chronic inflammation playing a key role in many of these conditions.

Inflammation doesn’t just wreak havoc on the oral cavity; inflammation can be detrimental to overall health as well. How you take care of yourself not only impacts the mouth, but the entire body. This program details specific strategies for optimum overall health, giving participants tangible action steps for decreasing inflammation.

Utilizing her unique experience as a seasoned educator, clinician and practice coach, Stacy McCauley’s presentations offer a high-energy, workshop environment where attendees learn the skills necessary to implement inflammation management strategies in their practices. Using realistic case studies and small group interaction, attendees will learn optimum periodontal diagnosis and treatment planning strategies, as well as how to present treatment plans to patients. Each participant will leave with a dialogue toolbox to actively engage patients to take action on treatment recommendations. Content will also include periodontal therapy insurance coding how to’s, making this program one that cannot be missed!

Learning Objectives: • Explain the current science surrounding inflammatory diseases. • Differentiate between pro-inflammatory foods and anti-inflammatory foods. • Understand how lifestyle choices influence both oral and systemic inflammation. • Describe the cascade of clinical events that define periodontal disease infections along with therapeutic

intervention strategies. • Demonstrate through treatment planning exercises how to enroll clients into both gingivitis therapy as well

as comprehensive periodontal therapy. • Design comfortable dialogues to impact patient choices. • Maximize insurance codes and benefits.

Big Patients, Big Consequences: Obesity and the Implications for Dentistry (PM Session)Obesity not only cripples health, but it also has crippling effects on the economy.

Current estimates place a price tag of $150 billion in health care costs associated with obesity annually. Dentistry experienced a major philosophical evolution over 20 years ago when oral-systemic research first made headlines. This early research began to uncover how oral inflammatory conditions, such as periodontal disease, could have systemic implications (diabetes, cardiovascular disease and preterm low birth weight babies). It’s only been as of late, that science has begun to look more closely at obesity and its potential influence on oral health.

Utilizing her unique experience as a seasoned educator, clinician and practice coach, Stacy McCauley’s presentations offer a high-energy, workshop environment where attendees are able to not only learn the “what” behind a topic but also the “how” of implementation into clinical practice. Using realistic case studies and small group interaction, attendees will learn why obesity is considered a risk factor for periodontal disease and dental caries infection. Participants will also walk away with strategies for how they can better equip obese patients with home care products for oral disease management.

Learning Objectives: • Explain the physiology of obesity including its impact on inflammation. • Discuss the trends associated with food consumption and physical activity. • Describe the oral consequence commonly associated with obesity. • Make recommendations for oral self-care when treating a patient before and after bariatric surgery.

Target AudienceDentists, Dental Hygienists

#5: 9 Essential Tools for Reducing Stress in the Dental OfficeSpeaker: Ben Bernstein, Ph.D.Friday, September 11, 2015 8:30 am - 4:30 pm6 MCE

Dentistry is stressful: keeping the schedule, patient fears, dealing with insurance companies, pain management and staff problems are all part of the daily routine. Untreated stress brings on dissatisfaction, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, insomnia and more. The stresses are similar and different for each member of the dental team.

In this seminar, Dr. Ben Bernstein, a clinical psychologist and performance coach, delivers nine essential tools for reducing and transforming stress for any dental team. When stress is just at the right level, performance improves! In this course, Dr. Bernstein will combine didactic, self-diagnostic and interactive elements. Dr. Bernstein served as a national speaker for the American Dental Association’s Seminar Series and is the author of three books on stress. The Dean of the NYU School of Dentistry, Dr. Charles Bertolami, has called Dr. B’s approach “highly innovative.”

In this course participants will:• Learn the scientific relationship between stress and performance• Assess personal levels of stress• Learn nine tools for reducing stress• Use the tools to reduce personal stress • Apply the tools to patient care

Target AudienceDentists, Dental Hygienists, Dental Assistants, Office Managers, Receptionists
