DAVID’S CORNER
At Easter, It gives us hope that the best is yet to come! You have heard me use the phrase, “the
best is yet to come” on many occasions. It is the hope found in Jesus’ resurrection that we too will have eternal
life. No matter how good or bad this life may seem at times, there is something better coming when we get to
Heaven. Moreover, I believe, in Christ, there can be times of resurrection in this life. I am a testimony to this
along with each of you.
Over the last five years with God’s help, I have sought to do everything possible to allow each church in the
Kingsport District to live and grow into congregational vitality. We have seen many examples of new life and
vitality in the 58 churches which make up this district. Yet, we still have opportunities.
One such opportunity before me is helping the Meadowview congregation in Hawkins County. We have
opportunity to help them begin to have new hope and new life. In a recent meeting, the few members of
Meadowview requested my help. They desire to reach their community for Christ and become a vital
congregation. Meadowview is presently a preaching station; that only has Sunday services provided by a pastor
two Sundays a month and lay speakers on the other Sundays. Currently, this faithful congregation has limited
financial resources. Paying the heating oil this past winter was a real challenge for them.
Since my meeting, I have been praying for Meadowview. God has spoken a vision of hope for resurrection at
Meadowview into my heart. Appointing this congregation a pastor that would provide preaching services every
Sunday would provide hope. I am inspired to share this vision with every congregation in the Kingsport District.
Sunday, April 13, at 4 pm every congregation is invited to gather at Meadowview for an afternoon of praise,
worship and a time of generous giving. Money is needed to pay for a part-time pastor’s salary, to help with
ministry, and assist with some building needs. This is a great opportunity to come together and live into our
connectional system.
Over the next few weeks we are putting together teams to help with building needs. I personally will lead a
team on April 2nd
to do some work around the church. Meadowview church will be appointed a pastor in July and
come off preaching station status. The financial goal for this is $10,000. This is the God given vision and the
need. Nancy and I will personally make a financial gift to this effort.
We have the opportunity to walk with a sister congregation and help them grow in vitality and community
witness. Will you please join me in giving a financial gift, and plan to join us for worship on April 13 when we
share in Hope 4 Resurrection, and help our sister church be all that God is calling her to become?
You can make your check to Kingsport District UMC and place it in the offering plate on April 13 or put it in
the mail to PO Box 894, Kingsport, TN 37662, mark it “Hope 4 Resurrection.” Please be in prayer regarding
what you might give. God may be calling several people to give a substantial gift that will help this congregation
well past our $10,000 one time goal.

UPDATE ON BUFFALO MOUNTAIN CAMP
The Buffalo Mountain Camp Board continues to work with camp consultant Kathy Trotter of Kaleidoscope Inc.
to discern the best approach to a future camping ministry in the Kingsport and Johnson City Districts.
Consideration is being given either to a new seasonal (5-6 month) ministry format or a year round ministry, as has
been offered in the past. We are considering continued operations at the current site as well as an alternative site.
Current efforts are focused on better definition of the ministry that each site/operating option (seasonal vs year-
round) would allow and the programming and facilities needed to support each option. We are also endeavoring
to identify potential collaborations that would help enhance the ministry. All of this is being done with the intent
of identifying a preferred sustainable concept for a local camping ministry. Please pray for the Board and its
endeavors on your behalf.
NO 2014 Scramble for the Kids Golf Tournament In order to focus its full attention on defining the future of our local camping ministry, the Board of Buffalo
Mountain Camp has decided to cancel the 2014 Scramble for the Kids Golf Tournament. This golf tournament
has been an important source of scholarship funds for sending children to camp. However, it also takes time and
effort for preparation, both of which are now needed elsewhere. We are grateful for everyone who has supported
camp and children through this tournament in years past and hope and pray to make this opportunity available
again in the future.

EARLY RESPONDERS TRAINING SATURDAY, APRIL 5

GLEN ALPINE UMC
An Early Response Team Basic Class will be conducted Saturday April 5, 2014, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, at Glen
Alpine UMC, 3200 Glen Alpine Rd, Kingsport, TN. This course is a requirement for anyone wanting to be
certified to participate in Holston Conference ERT responses to disasters. Paul Hite will be the trainer.
$25 will be required for a Background Investigation, payable by cash or check written to Holston Conference the
day of the training. The Glen Alpine UMC Jamaica Mission Team will provide lunch at a cost of
$6.00 per person. (profits go toward their 2014 trip.)

GIRU COMMUNITY IN SUDAN
What is a School Block? The Kingsport District signed a covenant
relationship with Giru United Methodist Church
February 2013.The next step in living into our
covenant with the Giru UMC in Yei, South Sudan
will be the construction of a latrine for 450
students and 2 school blocks.
Rev. Fred Dearing says, “A school block is a
school building. We will build 2 - 4 room
school blocks. Each block will be 24 X 8
meters (79 X 26 Ft.) and will cost $35,000-
$40,000 each. Each room will hold 60
children even though they say 75 per room.
We do not want overcrowding since some
schools crowd 100 children in a room.
Additional needs of the children are school benches which will hold 3 children per bench. Cost is
$75 per bench. The school will need two latrines for the students with 4 rooms/holes each and one
latrine for the teachers with 2 rooms/holes. The total cost is $95,000. Student latrines are $3,500
each and the teacher latrine is $2,500.”
Our goal will be to raise $95,500 for the educational transformation of children’s lives in the Giru UMC
community. That is $222 per child (430) for the building (95K). (You might say, ‘But the numbers don’t
add up?’ The children will be divided into shifts to utilize the space more than one time per day)

ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION OPPORTUNITY
Tuesday, June 10, 2014, Kern Youth Center
On Tuesday, June 10, of Holston's Annual Conference, you will have the opportunity to participate in packaging
10,000 meals. The Stop Hunger Now staff will be set up at the Kern Youth Center, located just at the end of the
rose walk, ready for you to be a part of ending hunger around the world! Everyone is invited to participate and
we do ask the children to please bring a parent(s) with you.
We are asking for contributions of $5.00 (or more if you wish) to help offset the $2,500 cost of this important
program. However, it is not required to participate in the packaging process. Contributions can be made at the
Information Desk of Stuart Auditorium, at one of the doors as you exit the Tuesday morning session, or at the
packaging site.
IMPACT Stop Hunger Now is a global humanitarian aid organization that has been fulfilling its commitment to
end hunger since 1998. Every year, Stop Hunger Now provides millions of nutritious meals and other life-saving
aid to children and families all over the world. Stop Hunger Now collaborates with existing development efforts
in vulnerable communities to provide meals to places such as schools, orphanages, nurseries and medical clinics.
Stop Hunger Now started its meal packaging program in 2005. Each six-serving bag produced by Stop Hunger
Now volunteers includes rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix with 21 essential vitamins and
minerals. Each meal costs only 29 cents and has a shelf life of two years.
More than 800 million people, or 1 in 8, suffer from CHRONIC HUNGER ...

CHILD CARE AT CONFERENCE
May 23 – Deadline to pre-register for CHILDCARE - pre-payment is required.
NEW THIS YEAR! Parents may drop off their children at the Wilson Children’s Complex for the
morning session (Monday and/or Tuesday) and pick them up after the afternoon session.
Under this new arrangement, lunch MUST be provided for the children who stay at the complex for both
the morning and afternoon sessions. Parents may purchase a bagged lunch from Lake Junaluska
(included on the pre-registration form), OR they must provide a packed lunch when they drop off their
children in the morning. All children must be picked up from the complex at the close of the afternoon
session. They may return after dinner for the evening session for an additional fee.
As in the past, Holston Conference will continue to subsidize most of the costs for childcare. Pricing
information is available on the website.

DISTRICT YOUTH NEWS UPDATE
WOW!!! That is the best word to describe the youth worship service we had at
Crossroad UMC. We have received tremendous positive feedback from the folks that
attended the worship service. We want to give a special thanks to Crossroads UMC
for being a great host and to their worship bands for providing the music. So what's next?
Our next youth event will be on April 27 at Church Hill 1st UMC. One purpose of the event is to elect the
Kingsport district delegates for CCYM this year. BUT WAIT! Before you decide not to come to this event it is
about more than just CCYM elections. It is about building connections across the district. Even if none of your
youth want to be part of the election process, they will not want to miss the food, fellowship and devotion
time.

devotion leader Friday and Saturday. We believe the
youth will really connect to Tyrus and his authentic,
energetic and uplifting style of music. We need help
from youth leaders to work with staff from Camp
Wesley Woods/Camp Dickenson to line up GAMES
for Saturday. Then of course there is the FOOD! You and your youth
group will not want to miss it! Get your camping spots today!
Always remember our #1 goal is teaching youth how to be disciples of
Jesus Christ through everything we do.

Service
Project is
holding their
third annual
golf
tournament on April 21st
. ASP serves over 25
Appalachian communities including families in the
Tri-Cities area! ASP is seeking 60 golfers to play in
their tournament and you can either sign-up as a 4-
person team or as an individual and they will place
you on a team when you arrive. Please head to
www.golf4asp.org in order to sign up to play in the
tournament. Lunch and cart are provided in the cost!
Also, if you know of any businesses that would like
to support this ministry, there are sign-up sheets to
be a sponsor on the same website. All proceeds will
go to support the families that ASP serves.
Special Note: You do not need to be a member of
the Blackthorn Club to participate.

Each church can pick one of these options. Collect them at the church.
Collection Dates at Crossroads UMC:
Tuesday, June 3 10 am – 4 pm (Volunteers needed!)
Wednesday, June 4 9 am – 1 pm (Volunteers needed!)
NO kits will be accepted after 1 pm on June 4!
Money: Include $5/kit. (Do NOT put in kit.) There should be one check from the church or one individual, written to the Kingsport District.
Place in an envelope & mark it with church name, number of kits & amount enclosed.
Hand to the treasurer when kits are dropped off.

Orders & check (1 check for each church) need to be in the district office by Monday, April 28.
Write check to Kingsport District & on the “for” line put church & # of backpacks.
