MARCHBusiness of the Month

Smith Furniture

Smith Furniture, 312 N. Jefferson Street, was chosen as the Business of the Month

for March by the Chamber Ambassadors. The Ambassadors nominated Smith Furniture

because of their long-standing membership with the Chamber, their support of the

Chamber, and their many years of selling furniture throughout Huntington County. Smith

Furniture was established in 1943 by Everett Smith. Robert Smith, son of Everett,

owned and operated the store for many years. The store is now owned and operated

by another father and son team, Ed and Jordan Smith.

Shown in the front row, from left are Phyllis Renz, Huntington County Visitor and Con-

vention Bureau, Chamber Ambassador; Nancy Smith, Carl Pierson, Debbie Allman, all

of Smith Furniture and Sue Rumple, Beacon Credit Union and Chamber Ambassador.

Back row, from left are Steve Kimmel, executive director, Huntington County Chamber

of Commerce; Ed Smith, owner, Smith Furniture; Brian Crouse, Robert Smith, former

owner, Smith Furniture; Scott Smyser, Smith Furniture; Jordan Smith, owner, Smith

Furniture and Robyn Smith. The Chamber would like to congratulate Smith Furniture

as being selected as the business of the month.

The Chamber of Commerce will hold an

American’s Disabilities Act (ADA) Semi-

nar on Tuesday, March 11 at the Habecker

Dining Commons on the campus of Hunt-

ington University from 7:30 to 9 a.m. The

seminar is sponsored by DLZ Architecture,

Engineering, Planning, Surveying and Con-

struction Services.

Stephen G. Metzer, AICP, PWS, DLZ’s

lead ADA specialist will teach the seminar.

Metzer regularly trains both DLZ staff

members and clients on methods to perform

ADA self-evaluations. DLZ is a Midwest-

based Architectural/Engineering firm with

roots in the state of Indiana. DLZ’s Indiana

offices are located in Fort Wayne, South

Bend, Indianapolis, Hammond, Burns Har-

bor and Evansville.

Businesses planning to renovate build-

ings or facilitate parking lots so they are

ADA compliant will be interested in this

seminar. Metzer will discuss ways to save

money when designing structures that meet

ADA requirements including entryways,

restrooms, resealing and restriping parking

lots, handicapped parking and more.

The DLZ’s Fort Wayne office helped the

City of Huntington with their ADA Self-

Evaluation Transition Plan development,

the citywide sign inventory which utilized

Huntington University interns, and is cur-

rently designing the City’s Little River

Trail.

Metzer will be presenting on ADA re-

quirements for private businesses, ways that

businesses may be able to provide reason-

able accommodations to people with dis-

abilities without expensive building

renovations, and things that businesses may

want to change and should consider as pri-

orities to reduce their exposure to potential

complaints and possibly lawsuits.

There is no charge to attend and a free

full breakfast buffet will be served. Those

interested in learning about ADA compli-

ance should respond to the Chamber of

Commerce by Friday, March 7 at skim-

[email protected] or call the

Chamber office at (260) 356-5300.

The Huntington University Foundation has exceeded its goal

of raising $75,000 for scholarships during its 75th anniversary.

Currently, donations are more than $165,000.

“We are so grateful to our donors who went above and be-

yond our expectations,” said Ed Vessels, president of the Foun-

dation. “This money does so much to help students in our

community gain a Christ-centered education at Huntington

University.”

Since 1938, the Huntington University Foundation has as-

sisted Huntington County residents who attend Huntington

University through the annual Huntington County Grant and

endowed scholarships. Approximately 20 percent of HU stu-

dents come from Huntington County, and these funds play a

large role in opening a door for their education.

The Foundation’s purpose since formation has always been,

“To promote education and all things pertaining thereto and es-

pecially to promote the interest of Huntington College of Hunt-

ington, Indiana. To promote the interest of said college,

financially and otherwise, in all legal methods, and to do all

other things necessary to carry out such purposes.”
