IntroductionTheChampionshipof the Universal ClassStruggle,a circusscenario, was writtenin the Fallof 1920during Mayakovsky'swork at Window ROSTA. t is possible to es-tablish almost the exact date from the text. The line statingthat Pilsudski, he PolishChampion,"doesn't want to fight anymore"refersto the armisticeat the Polish frontconcluded on Oct 20, 1920.Inthe last lines, the Referee urges spectatorsto join theRed Armyin the fight against Wrangel;the Red Armydefeated Wrangelon Nov. 15,1920.Thus,"TheChampionship"must have been written between Oct. 20 and Nov.15,1920.The propaganda hemes and characters rom"Championship"arealso present inother works writtenby Mayakovsky n the Fallof 1920.The title, TheChampionshipofthe Universal ClassStruggle, is a line in the poem "150,000,000"written in 1919-20.The appeal to join the Red Armyis also the subject of Mayakovsky'silmscenario, ToTheFront(1920).Themes fromWindow ROSTAn October and November of 1920arealso very similar:for example, Window ROSTANo. 406 (TheArmistice on the PolishFront),No. 412 (Wrangel)and No. 528(Profiteers).Some of them, such as No. 406 andNo. 528,have verses identicalwith"Championship.""The Championship"was staged by Lazarenko in the Second State Circus inMoscow in November, 1920.The stagingwas a parodyof the popularcircuswrestlingmatch.Awrestling ringwas erected in the middle of the arena.Referee Uncle Vanya(the artistic name of a well-known referee of French boxing, Ivan Lebedev) wasplayed by Lazarenko. His costume consisted of a cap, long-waisted coat and high,

tight boots. The other champions were played by circus comics and clowns. Theywore jerseyswith a sash across the chest covered with imitation medals.Atthe end ofthe performance, afterthe line "I'lleven take a carriage,"a largehoop wasrolled intothe arena.Lazarenkoplaced himself in the hoop and rolled around the arenaand off-stage.Accordingto YuriDimitriev'saccount in The SovietCircus,Lazarenkoalso playedthe Revolution; he supposedly changed into the costume of the Revolution (a largered shirt)before the lastfight. In the text, however, the Referee presents the Revo-lution, and the Revolution addresses itself to the Referee. If we assume that thedescription of the performance is correct, the contradiction in the text can beexplained. Mayakovskywrote a scenario that was changed and rewrittenduringtherehearsal and first performances. It is possible that, between the text that comesdown to us (found in Lazarenko'sarchives after his death) and the text that wasactually performed, there are some differences. We can also admit the possibilityofsome physicalaction between the lines, permittingLazarenko o change hiscostume.Itmust also be remembered that it was a circusperformanceand that the differencebetween the text and the actualperformancecan be immense.
