The journey started in 1972 a little east of Highway 94 on Highway 20. We’d sing sha la la and swear we’d never grow up. Nothing mattered but how much we won by the previous night and what we’d tell our boss when we’d show up on the wrong arm of the clock. The food was fresh. We were fresh. And working a swing shift meant your game needed work. We’d like to think we taught Arnold Palmer everything he knows but that would fail even the cheap-est of lie detector tests.

We saved up some loot around 1975 and headed the party north to Waukesha. Burgers. Sand-wiches. Salads. And fish fries. A chandelier the size of Mt. Some-where. Standing room only. A place that treated you like a neighbour. And fresh. Man, fresh was the key. No frozen burgers. Buns made the night before. Sheriff Taylor meets Dennis The Menace. We had an independent streak the size of the stars we wished on. The world just kept getting bigger. We didn’t know how to say no.

The early Eighties were all about Stormin’ Gorman and the one that got away. Wauwatosa and 27th Street sprung up and so did the babies. Life was baby bottles in one hand and cold, cold drafts in the other.
