GCSE changes….. WHAT PURPOSE? changes….. WHAT PURPOSE? changes….. WHAT PURPOSE? changes….. WHAT PURPOSE?
• To provide a more accurate measure of individual st udent's performances – (e.g. instead of four higher pass gra des (A*-C) there are now six (9-4))
• Greater academic rigour – the exams can only be sat in the summer (one chance , not repeated sittings). A November re -sit is allowed post 16 chance , not repeated sittings). A November re -sit is allowed post 16
• No foundation level in English (where a students co uld sit an easier paper which only allowed a maximum of a C ) i.e. a ll students sit the same paper. Most subjects except maths will follow this example as they are rolled out
• There are fewer options in Science GCSE – either a n ew Combined Science (worth two GCSEs) or three separate scienc es in Physics, Chemistry and Biology
• Course work and practicals are still carried out but to a lesser degree, so most marks are won or lost in the final exam
