As I write this in my office I am sitting in the midst of boxes. Some people think that purple soon to be white is the liturgical color of the day, but for those who are transitioning like me cardboard brown is the liturgical color of the day. Alan Dundes, of U.C. Berkley once wrote, “Life, it seems, is nothing if not a series of initiations, transitions, and incorporations.” At times, we are doing all three at once. For Kay and me it seems that we are in the midst of the middle definition: transitions. We have brown boxes that are appearing at home. Life seems right now betwixt and between. This is a season, a time of goodbyes and hellos, a season of change. It is a time when you know that your work in the present is not done, yet there are thoughts of the future. To use Navy vernacular, it’s still my watch. Yet, like most of us I look forward to what the next chapter will bring. It is exciting, yet a little scary because it is the unknown. Questions are on my heart like, “Will the new folks accept us and accept what we want to do?” “Will we make a difference in what we bring and who we are?” “Can we have fun in doing ministry together with the new folks?” The Bible is full of stories of transitioning -- Noah, Abraham, Moses, to name a few. It seems the Bible is one big story of moving from point A to point B and all of the ups and downs that went along with it. The people of God experienced at different times feelings of shock, confusion, anger, fear, faith, release, hope, strength, and grace. The same is true of us as we work through transition. God will support us, sustain us, comfort us, and lead us each step of the way. As I am in transition so is the Elizabeth River District. The leadership will change not only with the District Superintendent but also with some lay leadership. The district will become stronger and more viable because of this transition. Stronger and deeper spiritual life will be possible with the exciting changes that will take place. I invite you all to keep Kay and me in prayer. Even more important, please keep the district, your new District Superintendent Wayne Snead and his family, and the lay leadership in your prayers. Someone once said that prayer is the spiritual Velcro to which other things stick. Prayer enables us to see every moment as a gift to cherish. Your prayers are truly cherished. The transition has begun. How do I know this? As I write this in my office I am sitting

in the midst of boxes. Some people think that purple soon to be white is the liturgical

color of the day, but for those who are transitioning like me cardboard brown is the

liturgical color of the day.

Alan Dundes, of U.C. Berkley once wrote, “Life, it seems, is nothing if not a series of initiations,

transitions, and incorporations.” At times, we are doing all three at once. For Kay and me it seems that

we are in the midst of the middle definition: transitions. We have brown boxes that are appearing at

home. Life seems right now betwixt and between. This is a season, a time of goodbyes and hellos, a

season of change. It is a time when you know that your work in the present is not done, yet there are

thoughts of the future. To use Navy vernacular, it’s still my watch. Yet, like most of us I look forward

to what the next chapter will bring. It is exciting, yet a little scary because it is the unknown. Questions

are on my heart like, “Will the new folks accept us and accept what we want to do?” “Will we make a

difference in what we bring and who we are?” “Can we have fun in doing ministry together with the

new folks?”

The Bible is full of stories of transitioning -- Noah, Abraham, Moses, to name a few. It seems the Bible

is one big story of moving from point A to point B and all of the ups and downs that went along with

it. The people of God experienced at different times feelings of shock, confusion, anger, fear, faith,

release, hope, strength, and grace. The same is true of us as we work through transition. God will

support us, sustain us, comfort us, and lead us each step of the way.

As I am in transition so is the Elizabeth River District. The leadership will change not only with the

District Superintendent but also with some lay leadership. The district will become stronger and more

viable because of this transition. Stronger and deeper spiritual life will be possible with the exciting

changes that will take place.

I invite you all to keep Kay and me in prayer. Even more

important, please keep the district, your new District

Superintendent Wayne Snead and his family, and the lay

leadership in your prayers. Someone once said that prayer is

the spiritual Velcro to which other things stick. Prayer enables

us to see every moment as a gift to cherish. Your prayers are

truly cherished.

I hope you all had a wonderful and

spiritual Easter. But there was a lot to go

through before the celebration of the

resurrection. Just as the apostles had to

be prepared for all the events that

would surround Jesus, so did we.

The Lent season is a time of inner

reflection. How have we done as

Christians? Certainly, it is now easier to

be spiritually ready for Easter than it was for Jesus’

disciples. We have the benefit of history, all the movies,

studies, and of course, the Bible. What did Peter, James,

John, Andrew and the rest have? Ok, they did have Jesus

right there with them to guide them on this journey. He

spoke to them daily and yet … somehow they didn’t quite

get it.

Imagine spending three years with someone and forty

days before they die, they tell you “do not be afraid for I

must leave you, die, and be resurrected.” How would you

feel? What would you think? What would you say or do? If

I were one of the apostles, I would surely have been

Thomas. I certainly would have been shocked by the news.

I would not want to believe it. I would have so many

questions. Ultimately, I would have been emotionally

devastated! Thankfully, I live here in the twenty-first century

among so many loving, caring, and spiritual brothers and

sisters.

I had the privilege of leading a Lenten study Give Up

Something Bad For Lent. We as a church group of about

twenty-three members studied ways to look at bad habits

and start good ones. This was one of those reflective times

before Easter. It was a wonderful study. So just as the

apostles, we as Christians prepared for holy week and

excitedly celebrated Easter, the Great Resurrection of our

Savior!

Let us maintain that joy throughout the year, moving

forward as the hands and feet in a more Christian

discipleship. God the Creator, Jesus the Savior, and Holy

Spirit our Strength and Light. Let that light shine through

you. Amen.

In Christ’s Peace,

District Program

May is Christian Home Month and the theme for 2014 is “Families: Called to Peace.”

There are resources on the General Board of Discipleship website to help congregations focus

on the Christian home and the need to strengthen families, http://www.gbod.org/planning-

calendar/christian-home-month. What does peace look like in your home or in your church?

“Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss

each other.” (Psalm 85:10) Take some time this month to reflect on

this psalm and ways that you can be a peacemaker in today’s world.

This past month I had the opportunity to hear the first speaker in

the series sponsored by Courthouse Community UMC in Virginia Beach. Nadia Bolz-Weber

is the pastor of the House for All Saints and Sinners in Denver, Colorado. She speaks to the

millennial generation and all who are eager to be the church in today’s society. She shared

her congregation’s experiences living out their faith, being participating members of their

church. They are building relationships with each other and with their community. Go to

http://www.houseforall.org/ to read about the unique experiences of her congregation.

Nadia’s memoir Pastrix: The Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner & Saint is available to

borrow from the District Office.

The District Board of Discipleship has met three times now and we are eager to work

with churches around the district to partner in ministry together. Thank you to those who completed surveys. We

have used this information to choose workshops for the next District Training event to be held on January 17,

2015 at Community UMC in Virginia Beach. Before that event, we are brainstorming ideas for ministry

opportunities outside of our church buildings to minister to our communities. If you have an outreach ministry

that you would

be willing to share information about with other

churches, please send me a description of your

ministry. I would like to highlight the church in action

in upcoming newsletters. Watch for information

about a district-wide mission event this fall.

Two opportunities to help with District ministries

coming up this summer are Wesley Community

Center and Camp GOTCHA. These are summer

camps for children. To help at Wesley Community

Center, contact Pat Burns, [email protected] or

at one of these phone numbers: 399-0541 or 319-

6789. Camp GOTCHA could use another van or two

to take the children to activities around Virginia

Beach. If you love crafts or science, Camp GOTCHA

has openings for creative adults who love children.

Youth of high school age can be assistant crew

leaders and station assistants. Contact me in the

District Office for more information.

There are so many ways to be the church and

each of us is called to use our unique gifts where God

calls us to be. See other opportunities in this

newsletter to participate in the life of the

communities we serve.

Shalom,

Ellen [email protected]

In an effort to help churches throughout the conference with their stewardship

emphasis, the Planned Giving Officer, Stephen B. Clark will be providing

monthly articles we can share in our churches. The focus with these articles will

be to nurture a spirit of generosity through gift planning.

A charitable bequest is an easy way for you to help your local UM Church in

fulfilling its mission. Here are some of the benefits of bequest giving:

It costs you nothing today to make a bequest

A bequest is free of federal estate tax

Your bequest can be changed down the road

You can still benefit your heirs with specific gifts

A bequest may produce estate tax savings

For more information contact: Stephen B. Clark, Planned Giving Officer

What makes them so easy to sell?

• There is no extra cost associated with the program. A $5 gift card is redeemable

for $5 in merchandise.

• The public knows Kroger. Our name will give your program the visibility and

credibility that it deserves.

• Anyone who purchases groceries is a potential customer for your program!

How does the program work?

The Kroger Cares program offers fundraising for non profit organizations of all sizes. Simply purchase the gift cards from

the Kroger Gift Services Department. Your profit will continue to build when your group purchases additional cards or

adds value to their existing cards. You can participate in the program as long as you wish.

ELIZABETH RIVER DISTICT

“From the Old Testament times to today, men gather to discuss

their faith journeys and find meaning, hope and healing. Small

group ministry was an essential element of the Wesleyan movement

in England and in ‘the colonies..’

United Methodist Men shall be a creative, supportive fellowship

of Men who seek to know Jesus Christ, to Grow Spiritually and to seek daily His Will. Our

primary purpose is to declare the centrality of Christ in the lives of Men and in all their

relationships.”

It is hard to believe that five months have passed sense you provided me with the awesome opportunity to serve

as your Team Leader for the Elizabeth River District United Methodist Men. It is my ardent prayer that you know that

we've been working day and night to deliver for you. We want you to feel confident that your vote was well placed!

Our Team is committed to the cause and Mission of the Elizabeth River District. I truly feel that we have built a

championship Team and I sincerely thank them for all the work they have and will do!

The first thing I would like to share with you today is we (ERDUMM) have the largest number of Newly

Chartered Fellowships in the VA Conference and we thank you. Secondly, the VA Conference has the largest number

of UMM Fellowships in the country.

To continue the growth, the ERDUMM has established a new Program for the District,

“GRILLING FOR GOD”. We will bring the entire Ministry team to your fellowship and grill for

you. We are trying to build the established fellowships and to start new fellowships within the

district. We are requesting that the President of the current fellowship or a Member of Men’s

Group of any Church in the Elizabeth River District that would like the Elizabeth River Ministry

Team to bring our Grill to your Fellowship, please visit our Web site and make a request for our

GRILLING FOR GOD visit.

We are also very active with the Heart Haven Project. We are celebrating our relationship with Heart Haven

with a picnic on June 15th at Oak Grove UMC in Chesapeake, VA. Please come and help us celebrate our continuous

support with the Heart Haven Project.

Finally, the United Methodist

Men is the largest, most organized

men’s organization of any

denomination. We are the second

largest sponsor of the Boy Scouts of

America in the World. So, if you

have a Boys troop we thank you but

if you do not and are considering

chartering a Troop, we have the

Resources available for your

assistance.

We thank you for your support

and encourage your Fellowship to
