ALUMNI CHAPEL GARDEN AND CELEBRATION WALL: SIMPLE ELEGANCE, CHERISHED MEMORIES UNM Alumni Relations office proposed the idea of a memorial chapel in 1944 and raised funds through 1959. Architect John Gaw Meem drew the original plans. The Chapel opened in 1962 as a memorial to alumni who gave their lives in our nation’s wars. The Chapel’s simple elegance complements any occasion, public or personal. In keeping with the Chapel’s Franciscan Mission architecture, the design for the Chapel Garden extends the spiritual space within the Chapel to the surrounding outside area. The Garden’s comprehensive design plan includes provisions for a rose garden, gathering space, seating, shade, a fountain and lighting. The centerpiece of the Garden will be the Celebration Wall, adorned with tiles of photographs of alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends. The Celebration Wall will serve the university community’s spirit and provide a historic record of the many celebrations, memorials, and important events held at the Chapel.
