Texas GACThe 2017 Texas Credit Union Association Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) was held at the Driskell Hotel in Austin on February 15, 2017. Over 100 state and federal credit union CEO’s, directors, and managers were in attendance, 7 of whom were with the Fort Worth Chapter. Attendees went to the capital and met with lawmakers to discuss issues and legislation impacting credit unions, such as bills relating to data security breaches and credit/debit card fraud, home equity lending law, and account opening policies.

RMHYour Fort Worth Chapter of Credit Union members and friends volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House of Fort Worth on Friday, April 28, 2017, to provide an evening meal for those families living in the Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House of Fort Worth provides a “home away from home” for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost. RMH believes that when a child is hospitalized, the love and support of family is as powerful as the strongest medicine prescribed, and allows a family to focus on healing – instead of where they will stay, or get their next meal. A delicious BBQ dinner of grilled burgers, hot dogs and sides was provided to the grateful families. The chapter is scheduled to serve again in Fall 2017. If you are interested in volunteering for this very worthy cause, please contact Terrie Johnson at FWCCU at 817.377.7936 or [email protected].

YP CornerYour Fort Worth Chapter Young Professionals (YPs) have already been busy in 2017! The YPs have organized monthly meet-ups, including a very successful workshop in March on Networking 101 and Effective Communication Skills, and a League-wide meetup at the Cornerstone Annual Meeting in April. The YP’s have also begun the Operation Gratitude initiative, which sends letters and care packages to military and first responders. This energized, passionate group of young credit

union professionals is helping to break down barriers between generations, spark change in the system, and continue positive growth within their communities. Any Cornerstone League-affiliated credit union staff member 40 years of age or under is eligible to participate. Be sure to follow the YPs on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, and contact Meghan Jamison at TCCU at [email protected] for information on how you can win $250!

Encouraging OthersThis world has seen a lot of negativity lately and now is the time to stand together as one to support and encourage one another. In your career, let’s not forget to aid your co-workers in improving their skills and confidence levels so they can continue to prosper in their career. As you climb the corporate ladder, always remember those who assisted you to achieve your goals and pay it forward by helping someone else in their endeavor to further their career. Our lives have gotten busy and there may be oppor-tunities that were missed to encourage someone with words or your actions. Each person that you en-counter has a story that you are unaware of and may need inspiration to continue to strive a little higher to achieve a new level in their life. Take a moment to listen to your co-workers and understand the areas in which they need your help. The road to success cannot be obtained alone. It requires the advice and support of individuals you meet along your journey. During the process of building your career, there will be failed attempts and how you respond will be indicative to how passionate and determined you are to attain your ultimate goal. The lessons learned from those failed attempts should be a stepping stone to making the right decisions for your future. Remem-ber, your personal experiences can be influential to providing support and encouragement to others.

Honoring Jim Thomas Jim Thomas, a longtime friend and partner of the Fort Worth Chapter has decided to retire. Jim could be found at nearly every chapter meeting, and he rarely missed an opportunity to volunteer, particularly at the Ronald McDonald House and the annual School Christmas Parties. He is known by most for his fascinating stories, his sense of humor, and his infamous Krispy Kreme bread pudding. Jim may be retiring, but we know he’ll be working overtime spoiling his grandkids. Thank you, Jim, for your many contributions to the Fort Worth Chapter; you will be missed!

Two Fort Worth CEOs and chapter members were honored at Cornerstone’s 2017 Annual Meeting in April. Nancy Croix-Stroud, CEO of First Class American Credit Union was awarded the Small Credit Union Achiever’s Award, designed to recognize the exemplary efforts of credit union professionals dedicated to serving credit unions under $50 million in assets. Lily Newfarmer, CEO of Tarrant County’s Credit Union was awarded the 2017 Professional of the Year, recognizing her many accomplishments, time and effort in support and promotion of the credit union movement. On behalf of the Fort Worth Chapter, congratulations to both award winners!

January 2017Jeff McKissick, of Defense by Design, was the speaker of the January 24, 2017 chapter dinner that was held at Diamond Oaks Country Club. Mr. McKissick discussed the topic of “hacking people” and how the greatest threat to our credit union’s security might not come from a gun or knife – but a convincing story instead.

February 2017Detective Scott Thompson of the Fort Worth Police Department spoke at the February 28, 2017 Fort Worth Chapter dinner that was held at Buffalo West. The topic was Robbery Trends, Prevention and Loss Mitigation. Detective Thompson and Special Agent Edward Quintana touched on topics pertinent to credit union staff, such as current robbery trends and statistics, what employees can do to prevent robberies, and gave recent local examples.

March 2017Sheryl Powers of Legal Shield spoke at the March 28, 2017 Fort Worth Chapter dinner that was held at Joe T. Garcia’s. The topic was Identity Theft: What’s NOT in the Headlines? Ms. Powers gave a lot of great information and as always, everyone enjoyed the delicious Mexican buffet.

April 2017On April 25, the Fort Worth Chapter of Credit Unions held its 8th annual cake auction for the benefit of the Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation, raising $6,754. Over 100 people were in attendance as new Cornerstone Credit Union League CEO/President Caroline Willard delivered a speech on the importance of sustainability through awareness, advocacy, collaboration, and member experience.

Quarterly PAC UpdateOur goal as a Chapter for 2017 is $41,990.00. As of 4/25, we have raised $10,075.62, which is 24% of our 2017 goal! Funds for PAC can be raised through payroll deduction, sustained giving through credit cards, Gold Key Club (100% board participation) or sales of PAC candy. Funds raised from the Fort Worth Chapter golf tournament and Chili Cook-off also go towards PAC. For more information about how to get involved, candy sales, or payroll deduction of as little as $2/pay period, contact Maribel Moreland at EECU 817.996.0250 or [email protected].

Every time you attend our Chapter dinners, you are offered the opportunity to buy door prize tickets. Not only does this give you the chance to win fun prizes every month, but did you know that you are also supporting local charities too? The Fort Worth chapter uses funds raised from door prize ticket sales to make a donation to a variety of causes including:

January: Snowball Express - $280 February: USA Home Team - $320 March: Ronald McDonald House - $275 April: CCUL Foundation - $459

Tickets are only $1 each or 6 for $5, but it adds up to make a big difference in a lot of lives.
