1 February 2013 Dear Friends, February brings us Lent. The Eastern Orthodox tradition calls it a season of “bright sad- ness,” a time of self-reflection and prayer. This accords with our Episcoalian view of the li- turgical season. We do not view it as a time of self-mortification for its own sake (traditionally we practice alms-giving, fasting and prayer), but as a season of intentional, voluntary self- denial that brings us closer to God and prepares us for the great feast of Easter. This year Lent begins on Wednesday, Feb. 13. In addi- tion to the our Ash Wednesday services at noon and 7 p.m., we will be offering “Ashes to Go.” Teams consisting of a clergy person and a verger will station themselves at locations throughout downtown Coving- ton. We will offer passers-by the opportunity to receive ash- es as they conduct their daily routines. My thanks to Mat- thew Young, Rector of St. Paul’s in Newport, for sharing this idea. Sara Miles, a member of St. Gregory Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco, de- scribes offering ashes in the city’s poorest neighborhood. On her blog, she tells of motor- ists blocking traffic in order to receive ashes, of store owners welcoming the group of parish- ioners in, of tired commuters waiting patiently in line to re- ceive before making their way home. In the end she observes, “the amazing thing is that when you touch people's fore- heads and tell them they are going to die, they inevitably say ‘thank you’. " Even in this death-denying culture, people want to be touched by mortality, to have ashes smeared on their fore- heads and be reminded of finitude. Ashes are an invita- tion to dig deeper into this life, to find the infinite here and now, rather than a stain that reminds us to keep ourselves ritually clean. Our reminder of mortality also prepares us to face that at our deaths we don’t take any- thing with us. The traditional Lenten practice of alms-giving underlines that, and allows us to look at our attachment to our money and possessions. This Lent, we will gather on four Thursday evenings begin- ning Feb. 21 to look at this rela- tionship. The program, “Share, Save, Spend,” invites adults and youth to a spiritual “reboot,” because our money choices make a difference in the world. Also, Bishop Doug Hahn will make his first visit to Trinity for the Easter Vigil on Satur- day, March 30. It will include confirmation and reception. We invite interested adults to attend our Lenten Sunday morning series “re:Confirm,” which will include a series of teaching sermons and an inter- active component during TED (Trinity Enlightening Discus- sions) following the 10 a.m. service. As the title suggests, old and new Episcopalians are welcome to come learn about our faith in the 21 st century. I invite you, in the name of the Church, to a holy Lent as we explore our lives of faith. In Christ, Peter Rector’s Report

Dear Friends,

February brings us Lent. The Eastern Orthodox tradition calls it a season of “bright sad-ness,” a time of self-reflection and prayer. This accords with our Episcoalian view of the li-turgical season. We do not view it as a time of self-mortification for its own sake (traditionally we practice alms-giving, fasting and prayer), but as a season of intentional, voluntary self-denial that brings us closer to God and prepares us for the great feast of Easter. This year Lent begins on Wednesday, Feb. 13. In addi-tion to the our Ash Wednesday services at noon and 7 p.m., we will be offering “Ashes to Go.” Teams consisting of a clergy person and a verger will station themselves at locations throughout downtown Coving-ton. We will offer passers-by the opportunity to receive ash-es as they conduct their daily routines. My thanks to Mat-thew Young, Rector of St. Paul’s in Newport, for sharing this idea. Sara Miles, a member of St. Gregory Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco, de-scribes offering ashes in the city’s poorest neighborhood.

On her blog, she tells of motor-ists blocking traffic in order to receive ashes, of store owners welcoming the group of parish-ioners in, of tired commuters waiting patiently in line to re-ceive before making their way home. In the end she observes, “the amazing thing is that when you touch people's fore-heads and tell them they are going to die, they inevitably say ‘thank you’. " Even in this death-denying culture, people want to be touched by mortality, to have ashes smeared on their fore-heads and be reminded of finitude. Ashes are an invita-tion to dig deeper into this life, to find the infinite here and now, rather than a stain that reminds us to keep ourselves ritually clean.

Our reminder of mortality also prepares us to face that at our deaths we don’t take any-thing with us. The traditional Lenten practice of alms-giving underlines that, and allows us to look at our attachment to our money and possessions. This Lent, we will gather on four Thursday evenings begin-ning Feb. 21 to look at this rela-tionship. The program, “Share, Save, Spend,” invites adults and youth to a spiritual “reboot,” because our money choices make a difference in the world.

Also, Bishop Doug Hahn will make his first visit to Trinity for the Easter Vigil on Satur-day, March 30. It will include confirmation and reception. We invite interested adults to attend our Lenten Sunday morning series “re:Confirm,” which will include a series of teaching sermons and an inter-active component during TED (Trinity Enlightening Discus-sions) following the 10 a.m. service. I invite you, in the name of the Church, to a holy Lent as we explore our lives of faith.

Davidson named Senior Warden At the first Trinity Church Vestry meeting of 2013, Rev. Peter D’Angio announced that David Davidson has been appointed Senior Warden for 2013. David, a longtime Trinity parish-ioner, is serving the third year of his current term on the Vestry, having served as Clerk in 2012. An attorney with the Strauss Troy law firm, David has served previous terms on the Vestry and has been ac-tive in many important aspects of Trinity Church: Outreach, Ushers, the Human Resources Commission, the Men’s Prayer Group and the Brass Ensemble to name a few. As Senior Warden, David replaces Tony Milburn, whose Vestry term ex-pired. Julie Wharton will continue to serve as the Junior Warden, and Josh Mitchell and Emily Cahill were elect-ed to serve as Treasurer and Clerk, respectively. David will preside over the annu-al Parish Meeting that follows the 10 a.m. service on Feb. 24. In that meeting, the operating budget for 2013 will be discussed. Trinity holding a blood drive

On Tuesday, Feb. 5, Trinity will open the May Room to Hoxworth Blood Center for a blood drive. Appointments are available from 1 to 7 p.m. Please plan to participate, if you are able. It only takes 20 minutes, costs $0 and you can save a life! Did we mention there are free cookies and juice? There is a sign-up sheet outside of the May Room, or you can sign up at www.hoxworth.org/groups/trinityepiscopal Contact Katie Davidson with any questions at [email protected].

Thanks for UTO support

Once again, we who are small have given much! More than $1,500 was received during the fall in-gathering of gifts. The Episcopal Church Women of Trinity thanks all who so willingly and generously contributed.

Altar flowers

For those of you who donate so that we may have beautiful flowers at our services – thank you! Trinity does currently have many services that need flowers! The cost for altar flowers is now $17.50/vase (total of $35 per service) – it went up to meet our costs with the florist. Again, thank you.

Trinity’s Episcopal Church Women (ECW) is holding its annual Rummage Sale on Sat-urday, March 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will be setting up the sale in the May Room and Trinity’s halls and classrooms between Wednesday, Feb. 27, and Friday, March 1. If you want to donate items, please have all donations to the church during this time frame. If you need large items picked up from your house, please call Lisa Edwards at 859-341-7324. Due to limited stor-age space, these items cannot be picked up until near the time of the sale. We need volunteers to help setting up: Mornings: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (Feb. 27, 28, March 1) 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Evenings: Wednesday, Thursday (Feb. 27, 28) 6-9 p.m. (Break in the afternoon from 1-6 p.m.) And for the sale: March 2: 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Help-

ing with the sale. March 2: 1 p.m.-? Packing up and cleaning, lunch at a near-by restaurant after the pack-ing - for those interested. Please see the sign-up sheet in the hall for further in-formation. The proceeds from this sale fund Trinity’s ECW for the year. A few reminders about do-nations: Please make every effort to sort through items and discard anything broken, torn, stained, etc. All clothing should be clean. Children’s toys and furniture should be in safe condition. We are not accepting mat-tresses, TVs or computers this year.

Appliances need to be in working order. This is a great way to recycle unwanted items at your house, donate to the community, get some exercise, volunteer, and enjoy fellowship with other members at Trinity. Thanks in advance for your hard work and effort. It is much appreciated.

Jean Brann and Lisa Edwards (co-chairs of

the Rummage Sale)

This simple idea of giving families a source of food rather than short-term relief caught on and has continued for more than sixty years. Today mil-lions of families in 128 coun-tries have been given the gifts of self-reliance and hope.

Trinity’s participation in the Lenten Mite Box Project bene-fiting Heifer International has

been a part of our Christian Formation for the past eleven years.

Karen Vannasdall is retiring

from her leadership position in Trinity’s Heifer Project. We all wish her well and thank her for her work but we are left with an absence that must be filled if we are to continue this im-portant ministry.

Please consider volunteering to become our leader of this project. If you are interested, please contact Bob Deal.

As the weather has gotten colder, the parking spaces clos-est to church are at a premium; especially for those who have mobility issues.

The “Corner Lot” (Fourth & Madison) is reserved for those with physical disabilities and visitors only. Please find alterna-tive parking if you are not a visi-tor or do not suffer from a physi-cal disability.

The entire “North Lot” (between Trinity and the IRS building) is available all day on the weekends. If possible, you are encouraged to use the IRS parking garage instead of the North Lot, as this will free up parking for visitors and those that find parking difficult.

The IRS parking garage (just north of the church lot on Madison Avenue) is available on Sundays until

1 p.m. as long as you have regis-tered your car with the church office. Once you have registered your vehicle, you will receive a numbered parking tag that you can display in your car. If you need a parking tag, please visit the church office during regular business hours. Additional parking during non-business hours may be available at the neighboring bank lots. Be careful to not block the bank drive-thru or oth-er cars. Bank lot parking is not guaranteed. If you have questions or con-cerns about parking, please con-tact Brandon Gabbard with the Buildings & Grounds Commis-sion.

MIDDAY MUSICAL MENU: The artist for the next Midday Musical Menu concert on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 12:15 p.m. is Wesley Roberts, professor of music at Camp-bellsville (Ky.) University, where he teaches courses in piano, organ and musicology, and has been a member of the faculty since 1982. He has pre-sented concerts as pianist and organist throughout the Unit-ed States, in Europe and in Asia. Dr. Roberts has served as a visiting professor at the French Piano Institute in Paris and at Shanghai Normal University, and as organist at Calvin Pres-byterian Church in Louisville and First Baptist Church in Somerset for nearly a decade each. John Deaver is trading organ recitals with Dr. Rob-erts, having played at Camp-bellsville in October.

Thank you to Bon-nie Smyth, Linda Tabeling, Mary Aus-tin, Libby Baker, Dar-ry Rhine, Dora Telle, Don Neff, Emery Schmitt, Jim Swearingen, Don Will and Richard Putthoff for their help with the December luncheon, which served more than 125 people. Thank you to the Trinity Brass Ensemble: Cliff Daly and David Davidson, trumpeters; Lew Clements, eu-phoniumist; and David Bull-ock, tubist; for their fine play-ing both in leading the carols and in their solo pieces (also, special thanks to them for their playing both services on Christmas Eve!).

Parking lots update Music at Trinity

EVENSONG: The next Even-song will be on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 7:00 p.m. The service lasts about 50 minutes. The previously announced homilist is unable to attend. The unac-companied canticles for the service are by Charles Wood (1866-1926). Wood was born in Northern Ireland and stud-ied with Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London.

He went on to teach at his al-ma mater and at Cambridge University. The anthem for the service is “Save Us O Lord” by Edward C. Bairstow (1874-1946), based on the text of the antiphon for compline. Bair-stow was born at Hudders-field, England and went on to become Organist of York Min-ster and Professor of Music at Durham University.
