INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
THANKSLIVING IS THANKSGIVING
by Chuck Boatman
Captain Charlie Plumb (USAF) was sitting in a Kansas City restaurant.
Another customer kept looking his way and finally got up and came to
Plumb’s table. The man said, “You’re Captain Plumb. You flew jets in Viet-
nam. You flew from the Kitty Hawk. You were shot down. You parachuted
into enemy hands and spent six years as a POW.”
Plumb replied, “Yes sir, I am Captain Plumb, but how did you know all
that?”
“Because I packed your parachute, and I guess it worked.”
Plumb rose to his feet, shook the man’s hand and said, “I’ve said a lot
of prayers of thanks for your nimble fingers, but I never thought I’d
have the privilege of thanking you in person.” Then Plumb asked, “Do you
keep track of all the parachutes you packed?”
The man said, “No, it’s enough gratification for me just to know that
I’ve served.”
Plumb said he spent that night wondering, “How many times might I
have passed the sailor on the aircraft carrier we shared and never paid
any attention to the “lowly” sailor because I was a ‘jet jockey?’ How
many hours did that sailor spend packing parachutes exactly right for
pilots who never gave him a second thought?”

The Mission Statement of SonRise Christian Fellowship: Bringing people into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ,
gathering them together as a worshipping community, growing them up as his life-long disciples, and sending them out as ministers of the Gospel for the sake of the world.
Plumb says, “I could[n’t] have cared less . . .
until one day my parachute came along and he
packed it for me. . . . So how’s your parachute
packing coming along? Who looks to you for
strength in times of need? And perhaps, more
importantly, who are the special people in your
life who provide you the encouragement you
need when the chips are down? Perhaps it's time
right now to give those people a call and thank
them for packing your chute.”
–- [adapted from chapter 16 of Plumb’s book, Packing
Parachutes. http://www.charlieplumb.com/book-
insights.htm]
Todd Hunter—in his recent TELOS seminar here at
SonRise last month—challenged us to rethink our under-
standing of God’s plan for redeeming us and the world.
Todd reminded us that the choice by Adam and Eve to
disobey God was not where God’s plan began. No, the
plan began before “the Beginning” as the Triune God
began to move history toward the “telos”—the end—
they had in mind.
The Father’s purpose from the beginning has been to
bring the Son into the world so that by the power of the
Spirit all of humanity who desires to do so might be-
come a part of God’s kingdom. When each of us makes
the decision to let God rule in our hearts, the kingdom
grows by that amount.
In other words (as Todd said), “The kingdom of God
is wherever what God wants done is done.” And that’s
the point at which we each begin asking, “How would
Jesus live my life?”
This is where thanksgiving becomes thanksliving. . .
. and in the process we get to bypass an argument theo-
logians (and we “regular” Christians) have engaged in
for centuries.
The old issue of “faith vs. works” misses the point
entirely. The question is not, “Am I saved by my faith or
by my works?” Instead, it is, “Since God has offered
salvation to me through the death and resurrection of
Jesus, what kind of life will enable me to properly show
my thanks to God for his indescribable gift of eternal
life?”
Back to that question, “How would Jesus live my
life?” Todd suggested that Jesus would live our lives the
way he lived his life—in the world, touching the lives of
the hurting, the wounded, the poor, the rich, the very
intelligent, the powerful, the “religious,” the unbeliever,
the rejected, the proud, the confused, the “different” and
even the exceedingly average person—helping every sin
-handicapped soul bring his or her specific brokenness
to Jesus. As this happens, these will experience healing
and wholeness just as we are continuing to find it day by
day.

Home is Where Your Heart Is!
Home sweet home! If there’s one place we all
long to go, it’s home. There’s no place like it. Home is
sweet. Whether it’s on the range, in the city or way up
high in the mountains, home is where our hearts can be
found.
I recently took some time off and went up high
into the Sierra’s to help my parents move. This is my
parent’s 29th move from one home to another. My
Father worked for the U.S. Navy. Growing up in a
military family, you go wherever the Navy sends you.
My mother made a home for our family all over the
United States and even Europe. Even married with my
own family it still feels good to go home. My parents
are getting ready to move into their new home in a few
weeks and Mom is already planning to get her whole
family together to celebrate the holidays.
There’s a reason why people want to go home,
especially on holidays, birthdays, or any special time
when family and friends have occasion to gather. They
want to be with people who know them. They want to
just be themselves without judgment or pretense. My
mother has the gift of making her home a place where
her whole family wants to be. In the evenings you turn
off the T.V. and gather together to talk and share about
old times and old places we use to live. Memories,
memories and even more memories are the secret to a
happy home.
Mom and Dad have beautiful things, but that’s
not what makes their home so beautiful, it’s the music,
the smells and the tastes that bring those fond memories
of old and new times we share together. Mom and Dad
and even their parents started many traditions, even the
new additions to our family adds their families traditions
to our holiday meals and adventures. Many of those
traditions are everyday things all families do, but other
activities are unique to our own family.
Moving is hard work and emotions are tender,
but how sweet the new memories will be when added to
the sweet ones already made. Each family gathering
you are creating new memories and traditions whether
it’s in the home you grew up in or the new one you’re
moving into.
My parents have always honored and loved God
in their 29 homes. That’s why everyone who enters into
their home feels love and are loved.
So my charge to you sweet church family is
make time for your own family during these hurried
holidays and focus on God and the blessings He has
showered you with. Teach your children how God has
made an impact on your life, and make new memories
and never forget to share the old ones.
In His Love,
Beth Ann
Children’s Ministry Happenings Awana - This fun-filled spiritual club is going strong.
We have 38 kids registered. Twelve are in the T&T
group (3rd- 6th grade). Genese Witwer has been directing
this age-group since the club began. Nine are in
Sparkies (K- 2nd grade) led by Candace Jones; Nine are
in Cubbies (3-5yrs) led by Sandy Goodman and her
team; and eight are in Trek and Journey, the Jr. and Sr.
High School group led by Jen Dugas and Les Seymour.
The Awana club had a fun-filled time at their “Fun
Harvest Fest” held on October 25th. The kids played
games and made fun crafts.
Our awesome Commander, Charlene Mann is doing a
fantastic job as always.
Los Amigos - Is in full swing. They had their first field
trip to San Diego. On Columbus Day, October 8th, they
took the Coaster down to San Diego, then hopped on the
Ferry to Coronado, ate a yummy lunch and then spent
the rest of the afternoon in San Diego just exploring.
The kids were so appreciative and we all had a fun and
safe time together.
Sunday School - Thank you Sunday School team. You
are making a wonderful difference. We are in a transi-
tional period before we start a brand new program called
The Gospel Project for Kids. We will start this new
program in January. It is a three-year commitment, but
we are looking forward to new a fun way to teach our
children how the whole Bible was written to tell the
story of Jesus.

Preschool- Thanks the church family for praying for
our enrollment to increase—we now have 38 chil-
dren attending the preschool. Our prayer goal was
40 by the end of October, so keep praying, staff-wise
we are almost full.
We also want to thank you for helping us with our
Mixed Bag Fundraiser. The totals aren’t in yet as I
prepare this article for you, but if you missed the
deadline, you should be able to order before Christ-
mas for those hard-to-buy relatives. Everyone needs
bags now—don’t you know we are all going Green?
Save our trees.
Kid’s Night Out- Our Dinner and a Movie (UP)
was too much fun. We hope the parents who had a
date night had a fun evening, as well. We are plan-
ning our next Kid’s Night Out for December so keep
an eye out for the date .
The time is from 6pm to 9pm. Donations are wel-
comed because your kids eat a lot, and we always
have a fun, fun time. Must call for reservations or
sign up in the church office so we have enough
yummy dinner for everyone. We play a great game
of volleyball at the end of the movie. RSVP is im-
portant. 760-728-5804.

THANKSLIVING IS THANKSGIVING
(Continued from Page 2)
To the extent that we learn to live our lives like our
Master, we influence others to learn from him too. . .
. and the circle of thanksgiving—thanksliving contin-
ues to expand.
Wherever in the world our path merges with
someone else’s, we have the privilege of showing
them the grace of God that has changed our lives
from self-centeredness to gratitude. In the rough-and-
tumble of the marketplace, the university, the free-
way, the political arena, the sports field, the home
where the dishes need doing and the laundry basket
is overflowing—and perhaps even in the church!—
wherever our gifts and talents give us opportunity to
pursue our calling as the people of God, the Spirit
will empower us to turn thanksgiving into thanksliv-
ing.
Even if it’s the lowly, “thankless” job of packing
parachutes in the hold of a ship somewhere off the
coast of Vietnam.

In Philippians 4:8,9 Paul gives
the rule for the thinking life of
the Christian. Have we ever
given our brains the task of con-
centrated thinking along this
line? “Finally, brethren, what-
ever things are true, whatever
things are noble, whatever
things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever
things are lovely, whatever things are of good report;
if there is any virtue and if there is anything praise-
worthy—meditate on these things.” It is because we
will not bring every thought into captivity to the obe-
dience of Christ that all perplexities are produced re-
garding methods of thinking that look like Christian-
ity. Strands are taken out of Jesus Christ’s teaching,
the Bible ix exploited o agree with certain principles,
but the Truth, our Lord Jesus Christ is ignored. If we
base our thinking on principles instead of on a Person
we shall go wrong, no matter how devout or honest
we are. The one great truth to keep steadfastly before
us is the Lord Jesus Christ; He is the Truth. Only the
whole truth is the truth; any part of the truth may be-
come an error. If you have a ray of light on the truth,
never call it the whole truth; follow it up and it will
lead you to the central Truth, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Stepping From
Summer into Fall Unexpected Slowness, and the
Promise of a New Season
There's something special about the summer - people are more relaxed, camps and outreaches provide special opportunities for ministry - it's my favorite time of the year. This summer brought great ministry opportunities and many visitors from around the world. I was anticipating lots of activity. It was a plan of non-stop action. But a fall from a bicycle and an injury to my leg turned those plans a bit upside down this year. After the injury didn't heal as expected, I was sent home from camp, and spent several weeks flat on my back. It wasn’t my plan for the summer, but it was the Lord's. Forced rest was an interesting experience. Some days I was frustrated and stir crazy; others I was thankful for the rest. I received wonderful care, even if I wasn't always a patient patient. After a several scary days, I was grateful that the injury didn't result in surgery as was feared. And now, two months after the fall, my leg is still healing from a persistent hematoma. I'm back on my feet (mostly) and thankful for the touch of the great physician. And, I'm ready to step (gently) into Fall. Expected or unexpected, I trust that He has great things in store!
