THE CHIMES
Ready or not… fall is here!
The days grow cooler (please!), classes
resume for all our students and
teachers (What? Already?), football returns (“Go,
Chargers!!!”)… and this month a fresh new year of
ministry, small groups, and exciting opportunities
to grow deeper in Jesus kicks off with renewed pas-
sion and great anticipation!
In light of the recent departure of Sherry McFar-
land, (our church administrator) and Brenda Tapley
(our Music Minister), these are days of tremendous
“change” and “transition” here at SonRise Christian
Fellowship. But in the midst of forming a search
committee for a new music minister fo traditional
worship, and Greg Coppock stepping in as our inter-
im Administrative Pastor, some things never
change! “Preach the word,” the Bible says, “be pre-
pared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke
and encourage—with great patience and careful in-
struction” (2Timothy 4:2). Growing towards Christ-
like maturity as fully devoted disciples is a core val-
ue here at our church, and we are so excited about
all the new possibilities that will be available to us
beginning this fall. This month we are highlighting
the ministries of Beth Ann Murray, our wonderful
director of Children’s Ministry, and Banning Canta-
rini, our faithful Youth Pastor, as we kick off a fresh
new season for the glory of God’s Kingdom. May the
Lord continue to bless us as we seek to be a blessing
to others! ~Pastor Jerome
Childrens Ministry
Get Ready for The Fall Kick-Off! With the beautiful
weather we enjoy here in San Diego County it is
sometimes difficult to recognize when the seasons
change. Without the traditional signs and signals,
we are at the mercy of the calendar to measure our
journey through time. So since it is now August it
means that its time again for our children and fami-
lies to prepare for the journey into or back into the
wild, wild world of school, and at SonRise that
means both our preschool and Sunday schools are
back in session.
As we transition to this event it is important that we
remember that it’s not just kids who are stepping
into a room filled with strangers, but first time
teachers and seasoned educators feel their pulse
thump when facing the transition to the schedule,
structure and challenges of the classroom.

A letter of thanks...
I want to thank all of the
volunteers who came out
to help on the Rummage and
Raffle Sale. I could not have had
a better group of wonderful men
and women and young people to
work with. If I could, I would like
to thank each of you by name, but
we had so many silent workers,
that came and dug in, like all the
men that moved the donations
from the garage and made
clothes racks out of ladders. In
thinking back at how packed the
stage area was, I thought we
would never get done
by Saturday.
You all made my work easy, and
a joy. I will have to say I really
enjoyed working with everyone. I
have a special thanks to my co-
chair Joan McVeigh; she worked
by my side every day and was a
wonder on getting donations
from Fallbrook merchants, and
items for our Raffle.
I have taken note of some of the
problems we had, so when we
have our next Rummage Sale we
will be better prepared. I hope
we all get to work together again
next year.
We were blessed by the generosi-
ty of our congregation with a
wonderful array of items to sell.
Thanks again,
Judy Lindley

From the Desk of Beth Ann Murray F or the first few days, or Sun-
days, both teachers and kids
can relate since all in the class-
room may be experiencing sweaty
palms, dry mouth, and in the rare
event - a low grade panic. This
period of adjustment is normal
and it means that both teachers
and kids are on the verge of a ful-
filling experience that will be
completed in their journey into
learning.
But rest assured as we roll out
Autumn, we are excited about
making new memories, and we
all are planning to have a blast,
because there is nothing more
exciting than getting to know one
another as you get to know God.
We have some new additions to
our teaching team and we want to
welcome them to our program.
Matt, Marissa, Troy, Jessica, Por-
tia and Harmony join our team of
seasoned teachers including Ab-
by, Alexis and Juan, Alysha, Ann,
Art and Deb, Beth, Cathy and
Pete, Catie, Chad and Colby,
Chris, Dannielle, Gayle, Kassidi,
Mike, Pablo, Rachelle, Rebecca,
Sidney and Paige. Your Chil-
dren’s Ministry teaching team is
committed to our program and
all are excited about sharing their
love for Jesus and our kids.
Please reach out to them and
thank them for all they do – your
words of encouragement will do
wonders as they transition to the
rigors of the classroom.
As we kick off our year we will be
transitioning from our Summer
schedule to the Fall schedule.
Our curriculum will be “The Gos-
pel Project for Kids” for the Ele-
mentary students and “Kids Sun-
day School Place” for our pre-
schoolers. Additionally, our kids
are planning to help decorate the
Kid’s Zone downstairs, so in a few
weeks come and take a “peek”;
we have a lot of fun together.
As we close out Summer, we are
reminded that not many kids in
our area are blessed with great
support networks of grandpar-
ents, family friends, coaches,
scout leaders and Church leaders.
But here at SonRise we are
blessed. This summer we had
some awesome church adult
mentors who shared their talents
with our elementary age kids.
We focused on intergenerational
interaction and we learned how
to make and bake bread and how
to create masterpieces out of
scrap pieces of wood. Building
relationships for the “Ages” was
an important goal for our pro-
gram and all indications are we
had great success. Interaction
with our Church family is an es-
sential part of our program as we
target to engage kids individually
as well as in groups with a broad-
er base of our Church members.
Our congregation has so many
hidden talents that could be
shared and experienced by our
children. If you are interested in
sharing your gifts with the kids –
please don’t hesitate to contact
Beth Ann.
To extend our program we have
introduced something new in our
Page 5 The Chimes September 2014
ministry this year. We are demon-
strating how serving can become a
stepping-stone to the faith of some
of our young students. Areas like
helping in the nursery or the pre-
school Sunday school rooms and
other age appropriate roles are a
few of the items we are looking
into. It’s a win-win for all and can
show how giving back can build a
stronger faith. As a child grows, a
focus on giving is one of the
strongest models of what it’s like
to follow Jesus.
Thank you Church family for pray-
ing for our SonRise Kids and their
teachers. Individually and collec-
tively you are making a difference
in their lives. Like parents, who
watch the children grow each day,
here at SonRise as we kick off Fall,
we too can see the seasons change
in the children as they move into
another year of the love of Jesus.
463 Youth Ministries
When you work in youth ministry,
your year doesn’t begin in Janu-
ary. As summer closes, the winds
of preparation and excitement
begin blowing as we prepare for
the new season of ministry. Like
many different types of fishing or
hunting seasons, the season of
youth ministry is at its peak dur-
ing the school year for us. When
the kids rifle back into class, we
make our ways back onto the cam-
puses inviting them to our rad
youth outreach programs, disci-
pleship pro-
grams, Sunday morning fellow-
ship, and into our lives in gen-
eral. More work than most com-
prehend goes into youth minis-
try. It is truly a day and night pro-
fession that requires you to be
adept to dealing with all types of
people and leading them through
all types of difficulties. The chal-
lenge for us is being intentional
about it all. We’re not here to just
be “cool” and “likable.” We’re
here to provide students with
something different than they’re
used to in world: An honest place
to honestly be who God made you
to be.
So how do we provide this com-
munity with such a reputable
youth ministry? We. Work. Tire-
lessly. Thursday and Friday night
s we don’t leave the campus of our
church until sometimes as late
as 12:00 p.m.. We host outreach
nights called OneLife and Breaka-
way where students can come en-
joy live worship, teaching, and an
environment that is healthy and
contagious. During the football
season we are committed to sup-
porting the boosters and our ath-
letes so we go to the games and
afterwards host an open event
called “Fifth Quarter.” Fifth Quar-
ter features dodgeball, food, a fun
place to hangout and draws hun-
dreds of students onto our cam-
pus. We also will have a number
of events coming up including:
Jumptober, 9to9 (24 hour fast),
The Christmas Parade, City of Ref-
uge, and much much more.
We are always in need of volun-
teers. Whether it is patrolling the
parking lot, or leading discussions
during a small group on
a Thursday night, we need vibrant
leaders to come along side of us
and partner in making an impact
in the lives of the students at our
youth program.

Preschool exploded this year with 35 chil-
dren enrolled into our program.
This is the first time in over 5
years that we started with this
many families.
The first day of the Monday-
Wednesday-Friday program we
had over 60 people praying
around the playground. Every
day we say the Pledge of Alle-
giance and then we follow it with
a prayer to start our day.
We really do only have a few
spots left so call today and put in
your student or grandchild. Not
only will they learn about Jesus
but they will fall in love with Him
too.
Sunday School is also in full
swing. We are continuing with
“The Gospel Project for Kids”
curriculum. Our buddy Heidi
Roderick requested we use this
program for our children, even
though it is a 3 year commit-
ment, we love that we have read
and studied the whole Bible
within that time period. Even
our kids who are saturated with
the Bible teaching in their daily
school lessons love this program.
Our teachers are Awesome of
course.
We will continue our intergener-
ational adventures with our
church members throughout the
school year as well. The chal-
lenge will be trying to fit them
into the kid’s busy schedules.

Awana Starts September 11th
Awana is a Bible centered, youth oriented, weekly
Bible Club. Awana is an acronym meaning
Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed, taken from
2 Timothy 2:15.
For over 60 years, Awana has been a leader in
children’s ministry, helping churches and parents
worldwide raise children and youth to know, love
and serve Christ. More than 18,000 churches run
Awana with programs in all of the states, as well as
109 countries.
Every Awana club is organized and controlled by the
local church and reaches out to boys and girls from 3
years old through high school. The club is divided
into three segments:
Handbook Time (Bible memory and missions work)
Council Time (Bible lessons, music)
Game Time (competition, sportsmanship and
teamwork)
SonRise Christian Fellowship has been hosting an
Awana Club for 38 years, with 50 kids participating
each week. We meet Thursday afternoons from 3:30
– 5:00, during the school year. Our kids come each
week excited and ready to recite the Scripture they
have memorized. We are in need of many more
leaders to help listen to the kids recite. Anyone from
high school to 99 years old, with a heart for Jesus
and children, is eligible to be an Awana leader.
Come join in the fun!
We’ll begin this year on September 11th, with our
annual leader’s meeting on September 4th. Please
call Charlene Mann, Awana Commander, at (760)
731-1084, if you have any questions.
Los Amigos Starts September 9th
Los Amigos is our Children’s Ministry’s outreach to
the Hispanic community of Fallbrook. We offer one-
on-one tutoring to children 3rd through 6th grade
every Tuesday after school from 2:30 – 4:00pm.
The children have an opportunity to receive help
with homework, while establishing a meaningful
relationship with a mature, Christian adult. We also
take the kids on a few field trips each year. We’ve
taken them to the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Safari
Park, The Painted Earth, just to name a few. Our
annual pool party at Lila Sandschulte’s house is
always a fun time!
Our program has become well respected within the
school system of Fallbrook. Teachers and principals
alike have offered support and assistance whenever
asked.
The children all speak perfect English, and they
absolutely value the time spent with us each
Tuesday. Please call Charlene Mann at (760)533-

E very Saturday morning at 7 am a handful
of men gather at Fallbrook Coffee
Company to encourage one another in the
ways of The Lord.
We discuss issues from dating and mar-
riage, college and careers, friends and
family, church and service. All of this ac-
cording to Scripture and in step
with the weekly sermons.
There are a few other men's groups that
meet so call me, Jerry Maurer, or
Chuck Boatman to get plugged in.
Men, we need to stand firm on The Lord as
our foundation and stay the course
as we follow Him so that we may be blessed
to be a blessing!
God bless. Pastor Greg
Fallbrook Coffee Company is "grinding" along well! We
are blessed to host
the monthly Pastors gathering and as the Fallbrook High
School Football Team
gears up for the season we are hosting the varsity squad
and their coaches for a few special dinners.

and check out our 2
new designated parking spaces for order pick ups.
So, stop by for a smoothie, a delicious cinnamon roll, a
tasty salad or
sandwich or a cup of our Fair Trade and Organic coffee
and be blessed.
Please continue to pray for this exciting ministry as the
The Lord has
called us to be a coffee shop for the community.

Twenty-seven souls aged 8 to 81
visited the City of Refuge in
downtown San Diego on the
weekend of August 22-23 as lay
missionaries serving food and
hope to the homeless and poor.
City of Refuge is a communal
family of David DeWitt's own off-
spring plus several local homeless
men and practicing young mis-
sionaries from around the nation.
Some of our team arrived Friday
afternoon and were greeted with a
lovely buffet dinner and fellow-
ship with the people on his team
with whom we would be serving.
After dinner cleanup we were for-
mally introduced to his extended
family and then received an over-
view of of the structure and goals
of the 15-year-old mission. David
and his clan man a 7 day-a-week
operation bringing food, clothing,
toiletries and Gospel hope to peo-
ple who live in the East Village
area of downtown. This is the area
located next to Petco Park, the
city Main Library and the Con-
vention center; some of the most
exclusive property in the county.
Later that evening we traveled to
the "bottoms"; an area located at
16th and Island near Father Joe's
Village and Extended Hands min-
istries. It is a dark area both liter-
ally and figuratively, as this is the
area where homeless folk some-
times transact drug deals or prey
upon each other for the necessi-
ties of life. It is an area of desola-
tion: abandoned lots waiting re-
development, shopping carts with
all manner of human possessions,
filthy sidewalks, food and paper
waste, wandering bodies and
damaged dreams. We broke down
into teams of 5 or 6 people and
went out to engage and learn
from the people who call this for-
saken place home. We learned of
people's unique stories and the
crushing catch-22 predicaments
of city planning, police enforce-
ment, social and medical services.
One man we spoke to, Arturo, was
a rather articulate middle-aged
man who had once been a parale-
gal. He lamented his extensive
medical problems and his unfor-
tunate choices with regard to
choosing appropriate services.
His situation was particularly
poignant as he had been robbed
of all his personal effects as well
as his priceless prescription glass-
es. He shared that he wasn't able
to travel to social program sites
due to his near blindness he
couldn't even navigate the bus
system. As part of our prior plan-
ning for the trip we were able to
give Arturo and many like him a
"care package" that eased their
plight. They were particularly
thankful for the aspirin we pro-
vided, as this is considered a luxu-
ry that they can't often afford but
desperately need. The next morn-
ing more of our team arrived and
we all loaded a large van with cas-
es of food, tables, and shade cano-
pies. We then caravanned to Ibar-
ra public elementary school some
miles east of the mission house.
There we set up the canopies and
tables and carefully loaded them
with a variety of wholesome foods
that had reached their expiration
date. Breads, vegetables and fruits
of all descriptions, dry goods,
meats, pastries and the like await-
ed our neighborhood friends. As
we prayed for their blessing, the
clients lined up by the scores.

Families, individuals, old, young,
healthy, infirm, Vietnamese, His-
panic, Anglo, etc.
One could hear a variety of lan-
guages and concerns as we en-
gaged them at the tables or in the
line. Some of us "worked" the line
to pass out water, help people
pass the waiting time and to get
to know them on a deeper level.
Some asked for prayer or a Bible
and we gladly conducted them to
our nearby team of pray-ers. We
learned of their thankfulness for
the food, of their ailments or life
situations. Some were very willing
to share while others harbored
hurts and remained silent. We
couldn't help but note that while
we were performing a valuable
service for these people, it was
they who ministered to us as priv-
ileged Christians. We were able to
"get inside" the story of poor Laz-
arus who waited by the rich man's
gate seeking just a crumb or two
to sustain himself. It gave us
pause to think which character in
the parable most closely matched
our own situation. All-in-all, it
was a time of spiritual growth and
enlightenment for our little team
of SonRise lay-missionaries. We
collectively wonder what is God's
next step for us in reclaiming the
people he desperately wants to
include in His forever kingdom.
Gayle Kott Shares
In all honesty, I wasn’t sure what
to expect when I went with Brad’s
group down to the City of Refuge
in San Diego. I knew the Lord had
put it on my heart, but really was-
n’t sure I was properly equipped
for the ministry – that I would be
effective in reaching out to God’s
children in this setting, and see-
ing them through His eyes. When
we got there, I was immediately
impacted by David, the founder of
the ministry, and his message of
choosing to prefer others over
ourselves – something he and his
team embody. Of course, being
human, there are probably occa-
sional mistakes made, but you
could feel the abundant grace,
and living in community the way
they do they are true witnesses of
God’s love and compassion. The
team from SonRise was a very
diverse group ranging from teen-
agers to young parents to those
like me who are on the other side
of 50. It was a good mix, and
from my perspective we were all
working in harmony.
When we walked around down-
town Friday night, we split up
into teams. I happened to be in
Brad’s group, and was encour-
aged by his skill at engaging
street people in conversation. He
had prepared little gift bags to
give them, with toiletries and so
on, which they seemed to genu-
inely appreciate. It was an excel-
lent way to break the ice, meta-
phorically speaking. (One of them
mentioned one of the reasons for
the large number of homeless in
San Diego was the weather.) We
interacted at length with 4 men,
all of whom had their own story
and their own beliefs – one poly-
theist, two Christians, one Bud-
dhist. They each had a unique
perspective on being homeless in
San Diego – one was hoping to
return to work soon and be able
to get an apartment again; one
was extremely well educated, but
had serious medical issues and
felt the system was completely
failing him; one wouldn’t discuss
his past, but admitted that he hat-
ed being homeless – even though
he “followed the rules” he said it
was a miserable existence, and
noted that many of the drug over-
doses that occurred weekly were
intentional – suicide, in other
words; and one had been in pris-
on for 15 years and living on the
street ever since his release, I be-
lieve, but was hoping to get off
the streets soon and write the
book the Lord had put on his
heart, and start his outreach min-
istry with the proceeds.
Page 11 The Chimes September 2014
While all four men resonated in
my heart in some way, it was the
last one, also named David, that I
related to the best – perhaps be-
cause we are both aspiring writ-
ers, perhaps because he quoted
lyrics from one of my favorite
worship songs, perhaps because
he had a wonderful sense of hu-
mor, but mostly I think because
you could feel his love for the
Lord. Not only did we pray for
him, but he prayed for us, which
truly blessed me.
Saturday presented its own op-
portunities – part of the time I
worked in the food line, where
over 100 people came to get pro-
duce, meat, bread – whatever
was available. This was a good
chance to smile and speak a word
of encouragement, but where I
really felt the presence of God
that day was praying for people
who requested it with Elias, a
Hispanic pastor who works with
City of Refuge, and his wife Alma,
along with a couple of members
from our congregation – Brad,
Rich and Karen. Being in the
presence of such godly people
and ministering alongside them
was very refreshing to my soul. I
know of some Christians who
don’t quite get the concept of the
Holy Spirit - to them it’s all about
the Father and the Son. They
should meet Elias and Alma, and
the Spirit’s presence would be-
come abundantly clear.
I am praising the Lord with hum-
ble gratitude for the opportunity
to meet each of these precious
servants and interact with His
sometimes forgotten children. If
He calls me to return, my re-
sponse will be immediate: “Here
I am, send me!”
Jean LaBlanc Shares
What I experienced through this
outreach was joy, sincerity, team-
work, and the love of Jesus
Christ. I was personally affected
by the children I served, their
sweet smiles. I was saddened by a
woman who had a black eye and
silently said a prayer for her.
There were a few senior adults
who were pushy and grabbing
food which took me by surprise. I
told them they were only allowed
a few because we have others in
line needing food too. The lady
that was baptized last week came
through my line and was very
joyful. I said to her, “Welcome to
the family!”
I am looking forward to the next
trip.

T he Prayer Shawl Ministry is
a nationwide ministry which be-
gan in Harford, Connecticut in
1998. It is a prayerful ministry
which reaches out to those in
need of comfort and peace.
If you have ever received a prayer
shawl then you know the love,
peace and comfort that you re-
ceive from knowing that many
prayers were offered on your be-
half in a time when you needed to
feel God’s love in your life. I have
been blessed to feel that love dur-
ing a critical time in my life.
When Pat Boatman went on hos-
pice, the Lord put on my heart
that I needed to do a prayer
shawl for her. I pushed it aside
for a couple of weeks until Joyce
Brittain mentioned to me that
Linda Hill had a prayer shawl,
already anointed, and ready to
deliver and she would be happy
to give it to Pat. (Both Joyce and
Linda were part of the prayer
shawl ministry at a previous
church). When I delivered it to
Pat, her daughter Deb was there
and remarked to her mom, “Look
Mom, that is your favorite color!”
This really stirred in my heart to
realize how God was opening the
door to this ministry. I only
needed to be obedient and follow
His lead.
I spoke with Barbara Harvey,
who is the chairman of the Prayer
Shawl Ministry at the Methodist
Church and she encouraged me
to start one at SonRise. In fact,
she gave us three shawls to get
started. On April 6 of this year, a
new ministry was born. Joyce
agreed to be co-chairman and
seven people came forward to be
crafters. We now have eight craft-
ers, with each bringing their own
personal gifts. I praise God for
them each day.
The vision we have is to offer love
through our shawls by reaching
out to those who need some
peace and comfort in their life.
We have recently added a prayer
pocket to our ministry for which
we are excited. We are trying to
be open to whatever or wherever
God leads us. After all, this is His
ministry—we are only His hands
and feet.
We are happy to report that we
have given out forty-one prayer
shawls since we began. We have
reached out to New Jersey, Ne-
braska, Oklahoma, Arizona and
Lake Elsinore. The following let-
ter is an example of the response
we have received:
June 5, 2014
Words can never express
my gratefulness to having
received your lovely prayer
shawl from Hospice Chap-
lain Art Blodgett. I will
cherish your gift as it is so
very special knowing un-
bounded love, prayers and
comforting thoughts are so
kindly knitted within the
strands of this most gener-
ous and beautiful gift.
Most sincere thanks to the
Prayer Shawl Ministry.
Gratefully,
Rebecca
Please keep our Prayer Shawl
Ministry in your prayers and we
would love to have you become a

Prayer Shawl Ministry

SonRise has had a
deep con-
tinuous relationship with the Mi-
qlat orphan care program since it
began. (Miqlat is the Hebrew
word for ‘place of refuge’.) Many
of you already know the back-
ground – established in 1997 by
Dan and Kristen Gillespie, and
currently working in Malawi to
bring about the spiritual and
physical transformation of vulner-
able children and their communi-
ties. Malawi, for those of you who
don’t know, is a small country in
south east Africa, ranking as the
10th poorest nation in the world.
Over half of the population is un-
der the age of 15, and 15% of all
children under 20 are orphans,
earning it the nickname, ‘The Or-
phan Nation’. While the Malawian
people highly value their family
relationships and do what they
can to care for the young mem-
bers of their extended families,
the extreme poverty in which so
many of them live makes it a diffi-
cult task at best.
Since Miqlat’s first Hope
Center was built in Kogoya Village
in 2006, the Lord has been work-
ing in miraculous ways. A second
Hope Center was built a few years
later in Thuchila Village, and be-
tween the two, hundreds of chil-
dren have been and are being fed,
given access to health care and
education, and most importantly,
are developing personal relation-
ships with Jesus Christ. The Mi-
qlat program also gives agricultur-
al support to the community, by
teaching the Malawians new farm-
ing techniques which increase
their current yields seven fold.
When the Kogoya Hope
Center first opened, the children
had the dull eyes, orange hair and
distended bellies associated with
malnutrition and lack of medical
care. The workers who were help-
ing with registration saw a look of
wariness in the children’s eyes, as
if they weren’t sure they could
trust the ‘azungu’ (foreigners). It
may have sounded too good to be
true to them, or maybe they just
didn’t know what to expect.
By the time I was blessed to visit
Malawi two years ago, that had
changed - the children were
laughing, playing, their eyes shin-
ing – the majority of them
healthy, full of life and love. But
that isn’t the only transformation.
Children who wouldn’t have been
able to attend elementary school
because they couldn’t afford a uni-
form are now receiving an educa-
tion.

FROM THE MISSION FIELD
Page 15 The Chimes September 2014
Secondary school (high school) requires a tuition fee
that many orphans cannot afford, but through Mi-
qlat a number of the older children are now able to
continue their education. Even more amazing, espe-
cially for an orphan in Malawi, several of the chil-
dren from the Miqlat program are now in college,
gaining the skills they need to pursue a career and
allowing them to break the cycle of poverty. Some of
those are nursing students, who want to reach out
and help their communities.
The Miqlat staff is very excited at the prospect of
opening a primary school at both of our Hope Cen-
ters. The government schools where the children are
currently attending have 1600 students, 12 teachers,
few desks, no books, and no plans for more schools
to be built.
Even with the tutoring program Miqlat currently of-
fers, many of the children struggle to pass the 8th
grade exams which are required before entering sec-
ondary school.
There is currently a very effective Preschool at both
centers, using the Montesorri teaching technique
and curriculum, which will be carried on into the
primary schools. The goal is to build four classrooms
at each center, and to open in September 2015, and
funds are actively being raised to accomplish this.
Dan and Kristen are humbly grateful for all of the
support the Miqlat program has received from Son-
Rise over the years. The need is still great, but to-
gether we are making a difference for the Lord’s
Kingdom, one child at a time. As the children them-
selves say, “Zikomo Kwambiri” – thank you very
much!
SonRise and Malawi By Judy Saunders
W hen God first put the Malawian orphan crisis
on the hearts of those who had traveled to the
country, we had no idea how He would bring forth
His plans on behalf of the children. We have
watched in amazement as our faithful Lord has
touched the hearts of many in this congregation to
provide the means to support orphan children, to
drill wells, purchase vehicles, construct feeding and
educational facilities, provide medical supplies, and
send teams to minister in His name. God has spo-
ken into the hearts of some of our folks to lovingly
sew new outfits and at the same time He has nudged
others to provide the fabric, trims, buttons, and
bows for these beautifully designed and crafted gar-
ments.
On Sunday, September 14th, members of the Miqlat
ministry will have an opportunity to share with our
congregation an update on all that God has been do-
ing lately through His people. Those who have never
heard about the Orphan Sponsorship Program, will
have the opportunity to learn how it works and will
be given the chance to be partnered with a youngster
who is in need in Malawi. On the patio following the
service, information will be available about orphan
sponsorship, future mission trips, the sewing pro-
ject, and the establishment of a prayer group. There
are ways for every member of our church family to
participate in God’s work in this part of His incredi-
ble world.
Though others hold the earthly titles of “director,”
“administrator,” and “board member,” we know
without a doubt that it is our Lord Jesus who has
conceived, orchestrated, and grown this ministry
from the very beginning, and it is to Him we give the
honor and glory and praise.
Created For His Glory Page 16 The Chimes September 2014
His Name Was Ralph
By Rick Founds
His name was Ralph, but every-
body called him “Skip”. He was
short and bald, with the voice of
Darth Vader on Steroids. Skip
had more energy, enthusiasm
and creativity than any of the
kids who attended his youth
group. Having been an orphan,
he knew just how to relate to, and
encourage anyone who had ever
felt abandoned, lost, or uncared
for. Skip was a master of empow-
erment. He’d help you to articu-
late your hopes and dreams, and
then do everything possible to
make them come true.
His life’s passion was to give
young people a sense of im-
portance and accomplishment,
and to assist them in discovering
their purpose in life. He created
countless opportunities for local
kids to be a part of performing
arts groups. These groups would
play in church and entertain at
fairs and other community
events. Designed to use as many
of the arts as possible, and thus
involve as many kids as possible,
he would have them singing,
dancing, acting, playing instru-
ments, setting lights, making
graphics and costumes, and con-
structing sets. I count myself
privileged to be one of the many
who were fortunate enough to
benefit from Skip’s unique men-
toring style. He lived everyday as
a practical example of Jesus.
When you were with him, you felt
genuinely important and appreci-
ated.
One summer morning, while rid-
ing his bicycle to work, he felt
pain in his chest, stopped pedal-
ing, set his bike aside, and lay
down on the grass. He breathed
his final breath on earth and the
next moment took his first breath
of heavenly air. His funeral was
packed with people and bright
balloons.
The work of God through my life
can be attributed in large part to
this short, bald, wonderful man
of God, with the Darth Vader
voice.

A s I sit here writing, with just a day left
before I head off to start the next chap-
ter of my life at Point Loma Nazarene Uni-
versity, I am simply in awe of You; Wonderful, Awe-
some, Extravagant God. I cannot thank You enough
for the beautiful ways You have spoken to me… even
before I could discern Your voice. I am so reminis-
cent at this time in my life, and it feels funny be-
cause there are these entirely new experiences
awaiting. I just remember being this shy, timid, in-
secure girl. I was longing for something deeper and
craving something that, I soon found out, this world
does not offer. Thank You for capturing my heart. I
am so thankful, God, for Your call to us all to be
servant’s for Your Glorious Kingdom, and I thank
You for those who answered that call and were able
to teach me multiple things that You had for me to
learn. I spent countless hours spending time with
students, serving people of all ages, fellowshipping
at my high school, praying with my basketball team
before every game and just loving others and being
loved by others inside and outside of the “church
setting”. I don’t say these things to boast, flaunt or
brag… I say these things in awe of You, Father. You
have given me the opportunities to experience what
my heart longs for— compassion, kindness, love,
friendship, fellowship, community. To be a part of
something that doesn't revolve around myself, but
that revolves around You and glorifying Your Holy
name. I cannot put into words how thankful I am,
Lord, that You spoke to my heart through such an
amazing church and church family. I have learned
what discipleship looks like, how to really pour into
someone’s life, how to serve wholeheartedly, how to
trust in You with deep faith because You always
know best, how okay it is to not put on a “picture
perfect” facade and be honest with my struggles,
doubts and deepest sins, how to hold each other
accountable, how to love people, meet them where
they are at and walk with them through anything
and everything. I have not just heard of these
truths but seen them lived out by people among my
church, and I am so in awe of You, God, yet again. I
know that there is no way… NO. WAY. to live like a
true servant of God without Jesus in my heart, and
I know that He lives among my church family. I also
thank You Lord for Your ability to break down gen-
erational barriers. I have seen You working in that.
I can’t thank You enough for the youth ministry I
was a part of, but I know Your work in me didn't
stop at the Wilson Center. It took people willing to
answer Your intergenerational call to teach me even
more about mentorship, and I am so blessed to have
the basic knowledge of such a vital part of our
faith, so that I may continue learning and growing.
All of my fears, anxieties and concerns for my next
chapter disappear when I think about how much You
can do in a span of four years. You transformed my
heart and redeemed my life, Lord. There is no such
thing as fear in Your wondrous love. As I sit here
writing, with hours, minutes, seconds slowly fading…
I am thankful for my experiences and cherished
memories, yet ready to advance knowing God is so
obviously and apparently before me on this journey.

A Special Note For Those Who Grieve
Responding To Loss
I n Genesis 23, the Bible relates
the story of the death and bur-
ial of Sarah, Abraham’s wife. The
chapter begins, “Sarah lived to be
a hundred and twenty-seven years
old. She died at Kiriath Arba (that
is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan,
and Abraham went to mourn for
Sarah and to weep over her.”
Abraham’s immediate response
was to mourn and weep for his
wife. He made a clear choice to
mourn. How have you done this?
Rev. Noel Castellanos says that in
healthy grieving “there are more
than just a few tears. There is a
real sense of honesty about the
pain. To deal with grief in a
healthy way, there has to be a time
of just expressing your deep hurt.”
Holy God, I choose to mourn and
to express my grief freely, knowing
that this is the only path to heal-
ing. Amen..

Prayer force
Page 20 The Chimes September 2014
No Prayer, No Power
by John Piper
This kind cannot be driven out by anything
but prayer (Mark 9:29).
Watch and pray that you may not enter into tempta-
tion (Mark 14:38).
I recently rearranged my study at home. But I did not
remove the prayer corner or the prayer bench. I made
it more private. All I have ever read and experienced
teaches me that deep spiritual influence for the good
of sinners and the glory of God comes from men and
women who give themselves to prayer and medita-
tion.
I just read, for example, about the secret of Charles
Simeon, who endured great hardships in his powerful
54-year pastorate in Cambridge (1782-1836). His
friend, T. Housman, stayed with him for a few
months and tells us something of this man’s devotion:
Never did I see such consistency, and reality of devo-
tion, such warmth of piety, such zeal and love…
Invariably he arose every morning, though it was the
winter season, at four o’clock; and after lighting his
fire, he devoted the first four hours of the day to pri-
vate prayer and the devotional study of the Scrip-
tures…Here was the secret of his great grace and spir-
itual strength. Deriving instruction from such a
source, and seeking it with such diligence, he was
comforted in all his trials, and prepared for every du-
ty.
It is true for individuals. And it is true for churches.
No prayer, no power. And we need spiritual power.
Consider the first quote (above) from Mark 9. There
are spiritual forces that Jesus says are very hard to
overcome. His disciples asked, “Why could we not
cast it out?” Jesus answered, “Insufficient prayer!”
What did he mean? Probably not that they hadn’t
prayed over the demonized boy, but that they had
not lived in prayer. They had been caught in a prayer-
less period of life. Notice: Jesus cast out the demon
without praying: “You dumb and deaf spirit, I com-
mand you, come out of him, and never enter him
again.” But Jesus had prayed. He lived in prayer. He
was ready when evil came. But the disciples had be-
come weak and negligent in their praying. And they
were powerless in the face of strong evil forces. “This
kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”
In other words, without persistent prayer we have no
offense. As a church we are meant to invade and plun-
der the strongholds of Satan. But no prayer, no pow-
er. The same is true of defense. Look at the second
quote (above) from Mark 14. If we are not vigilant we
will enter into temptation. Our defense and
our offense as a church is an active, persistent, ear-
nest, believing prayer force.
Please pray, and ask God to show you if you should be
a part of the Prayer Ministry here at SonRise. We
have many opportunities weekly to gather for group
prayer or to meet for private prayer. We are also
available after Sunday services, or you may call the
church office, or email us your requests through our
website.

Kairos Prison Ministry Kairos Inside Testimony
The darkness…the world is dark.
Walking through the midst of this
emptiness one becomes blind and
numb as I was. 5 years might not
seem long…however in my dark-
ness I felt the eternity of it. Wasted
time I mourn this night. It is this
darkness, this void wherein thou-
sands reside and yet alone you find
yourself seeking that which may
light your path. A hunger for death
became an energizing power as I
roam the darkness. Unforgiving
became my Kingdom, in it raising
anger, rage, and bitterness towards
all. Contrast to that my soul longed
and desired for a beam of light, just
a spark of truth to light my dark
road to guide me elsewhere. I be-
came aware that not only was this
not much of a road but a body of
water in which I was drowning.
There was nothing around; above…
below…nothing to grasp but cur-
rents of that which stole my soul.
When I gazed below into my hand
the pain of realizing that which
sank me was unbearable. A rock…
one measly rock, a stone which
dragged me further down into the
dark waters.
Why am I not letting go?
How do you let go of that with
which you fell in love with?
I found solace in the gray but my
soul cried for light. Slowly un-
clenching my fist the rock slipped
out of my hand and sank out of
sight, as I soared upward to
breathe the air I had denied myself.
October 16-19, 2008, The (Kairos)
weekend…my spirit is renewed
with a fire of love. I now find my-
self running through this darkness
lighting the paths with the fire (so)
that others may find their way. At
the middle of serving a three year
S.H.U. (the hole) term for attempt-
ed murder I came to know Christ
while single-celled for 10 of those
(36) months. It was the greatest
and most peaceful time of my life. I
did not surrender completely
though and Satan dragged me back
down. I became lost in the fog for
years, dying every day for His pres-
ence.
The (Kairos) weekend was filled
with His (glorious) presence. I
served Him as a loner church
(member) the first time around…
now I know who the church really
is…(me and my brothers and sis-
ters in community). His Spirit was
moving ever so mightily and grace-
fully among the men, my brothers
(in Christ). He came into the dark
to get me out via a small army of
living saints with Him to show His
love and (to) remind us that He
hadn’t forgotten us.
May the merciful Father bless each
one of you in abundance and ever
keep His peace upon your heads. I
have had a desire to use the follow-
ing words and I pray you all will
hear them and know that they are a
testimony of your service…”Blessed
is he who comes in the name of The
Lord!” (Psalm 118:26)
You were all here in Spirit, ya’ll
brought Him, His love to the lost…I
have no doubt. Surely you shall be
blessed!!

Fallbrook firefighters assoc.
All across our nation there are 9/11 Memorial Stair climbs organized to remember the victims of 9/11. This
is the fourth year Fallbrook Firefighters will team up with the Fallbrook Land Conservancy to utilize
Monserate Mountain to create our 9/11 Memorial Hike. September 13, 8:00am to 10:30am.
The hike resembles the type of terrain and
vegetation that wildland firefighters endure
and the elevation gain simulates the height
of the twin towers. Funds raised from the
hike are donated to the National Fallen
Firefighters Foundation and Homes for
Our Troops. Our event remembers all
those who were effected by 9/11, civilians
and responders. We take time to
remember and honor our military, law
enforcement, firefighters, first responders,
and EMS personnel.
At our event this year we will have a 9/11
survivor, World Memorial, raffles, and
Crabcakes911 Food truck! Come and honor
the memory of those who gave it all.
