Directory, your local

Another year is nearing its

end, and the natural world is putting itself to sleep,

wrapping up against winter, like a child who pulls

the sheets over its head to hide from the dark cold

ghosts until dawn brings in the new fresh light of

spring. Or something like that. Don’t ask me. All I

know is that it gets darker and colder and there’s

football on TV all the time– although, I have to

admit, that sounds a lot like summer in my house,

which I take great pride in keeping dark and cold all

year round, with football on TV all the time.

There is charm in winter, though. I love a misty

morning, or snow in Epping Forest, or the ghostly

stillness of a frozen pond, dead leaves trapped in

the ice, bare branches looming in the fog, the rustle

of the wildlife that hasn’t hibernated yet and of me,

walking, relishing the dark and cold and the football

on TV.

T his is what was supposed to happen. The magician’s assis-tant fired a gun. There was a

flash and some smoke. Then the magician, pretending to have caught the bullet in his teeth, spat the bullet out onto a plate. It was called ‘Condemned to Death by the Box-ers’. Chung Ling Soo, the Chinese magician, claimed that he had been captured during the Boxer Rebel-lion, and had faced a firing squad, escaping death by catching the bul-let. It wasn’t really magic. Between you and me, he cheated – the guns had been tampered with so as not to fire, and Chung kept a hidden bullet to spit out. Sorry to disillusion you – literally. That, at least, was what was supposed to happen, on the night of Satur-day March 23rd 1918 at the Wood Green Empire, in front of 1,800 people.

This is what actually happened. Chung, dressed in colourful silk, had already successfully wowed the crowd. This was the climax. The gun was shown to the audience. A soldier inspected it, then marked a bullet. Chung’s wife, Suee Seen, loaded the bullet. The assistant aimed and fired. The shot echoed around the auditorium and the smell of smoke filled the air.

But Chung did not catch the bullet. Instead, he fell backwards to the floor. “Oh my God,” he said. “Something’s happened. Lower the curtain.”

That was not supposed to happen. He died the next day in hospital. But the fatal accident was not the only shocking thing about that performance. Chung was Chinese. He had never uttered a word of English, speaking instead through an interpreter. So why were those dying words spoken with that fluent American accent?

I don’t believe in magic. I don’t believe in very much at all. I don’t even believe in myself, rather sadly. Yet magic has for me an allure that is almost – well – magical. From the most bombastic shows in Las Vegas to the cheap set of tricks that my Gran bought me, magic holds a certain – well – magic.

The first report of a magic trick dates back almost 5,000 years to Ancient Egypt, and a magician known as Dedi who performed the Cups and Balls trick – you know, where balls pass to and fro in upturned cups. Unfortunately, the Egyptians did not have You-Tube, so there is no definite evidence. In later mil-

lennia, the art of magic got itself rather a bad sort of reputation, what with witches, wizards and whatnot, but, as primitive superstitions disappeared, magic became again a form of entertain-ment, from the 19th century onwards, culminating in the glitzy showbiz of David Copperfield flying and the rather British charm of Harry Potter.

By 1918, Chung Ling Soo was a huge star. At the Front, in the Great War, a common expression used by medics was “Who do you think I am? Chung Ling Soo?” He’d perfected his show. Minor acts got ten or fifteen minutes. The star got fifty. He began with small conjuring tricks, interlinking steel rings, vanishing crates under-neath a curtain, introducing his wife in a puff of smoke before building up in a crescendo of tension to his finale, Condemned to Death by the Boxers.

On the evening of Saturday March 23rd 1918 at the Wood Green Empire, at 10.45 p.m., this act was his finale in every sense. But why were his dying words so very un-Chinese?

Chung Ling Soo had fooled audiences for years with his act. But he had also fooled them with his name. In the weeks that followed his death, his se-crets were revealed. How his tricks were done.

How the illusions were created. And the last secret finally became apparent. Chung Ling Soo was a William Robinson, an American New Yorker. He’d changed his name, and that of his wife, to increase his allure when he began to tour Europe. This was his greatest deception of all.

Mysteries tend to lose their charm when they get explained away. But, somehow, an aura of exoticism still surrounds Chung Ling Soo, in Wood Green, on that Saturday night in 1918.

Y our dog may not be able to talk to you, however they do communicate through their body language. Probably the most recognisable sign of this to most

of us is that a dog wagging its tail is a happy dog. There are lots of other forms of body language that your

pet will display depending on its mood and so here are a few more examples for you to look for so you can better com-municate with your dog:

I’m a happy or excited dog: - Wagging tail - Eye contact - Pricked up ears - Stretching - Play bow - Licking - Wiggling - Pawing at people

I’m a relaxed dog: - Stretching - Laying on back with belly exposed - Relaxed ears and blinking eyes - Yawning

I’m a curious dog: - Head tilted - Sniffing the ground, objects, people or other pets

I’m a stressed dog: - Yawning when not tired

- Narrowing of the eyes - Tucking in of the tail - Licking the lips or nose when no food around - Lowering or curving the body - Digging

I want to be left alone: - Panting (when not hot or thirsty) - Avoiding eye contact - Tense forehead and ears

I’m a scared dog: - Hiding under chairs, tables, in beds, behind sofas etc… - Freezing/going ridged - Shaking - Ears pinned back

I’m a bored dog: - Paw chewing - Floor/skirting board chewing/sucking - Destruction of property

I’m in pain: - Limping - Repeated head shacking - Hunched abdomen - Excessive grooming - Pain can sometimes trigger aggression, so if your dog starts to display signs of aggression in a short space of time, they may be trying to tell you that something is wrong

D r Suren Naidoo has introduced a new treatment for Vitiligo and Psoriasis, using Monochromatic Excimer Light therapy.

Vitiligo and Psorasis are common disorders, affect-ing 2-3% of the world population. Studies on the quality of life confirm that they are among the most psychologically devastating diseases, with dramatic effects on the patient's social life. The Excimer light therapy is the ideal solution for re-storing well being in just a few sessions. Treatment is available at the Chingford Dental Clinic and at the BMI Cavell Hospital, Enfield.

Dr Naidoo has also introduced a new treatment for Vaginal Rejuvenation: THE MONA LISA TOUCH, which is available at the BMI Cavell Hos-pital, Enfield. Natural ageing can significantly affect the vaginal tract, causing serious physiological and psychological problems for women, especially due to vaginal atrophy. The genital tract is particularly affected by declining oestrogen production, almost 50% of post menopausal women complain of the typical symptoms of genital atrophy interfering heavily with their sexual experience and quality of life. Increasingly, relatively young and socially active women are turning to specialists for treating this condition. The end of oestrogen production by the ovaries is linked to the onset of disorders resulting from vulvo-vaginal atrophy such as dryness, dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse), vaginal irritation with itching and burning.

The Mona Lisa Touch treatment is the combined use of CO2 Fractional laser with a dedicated pulse shape called D pulse. The treatment is minimally invasive, painless and safe. The laser acts directly on the mucosa of the vaginal walls by stimulating

the metabolic activation of the fibroblasts. This results in the synthesis of collagen and the restora-tion of the proper composition of the extracellular matrix, ground substance and adequate water content. The regenerated mucosa restores func-tionality that it had lost over the years.

The Mona Lisa Touch treatment is also used to treat vaginal relaxation. The term "wide vagina", refers to a condition where the diameter of the vagina has increased. This often happens naturally, although traumatic events at child birth can con-tribute to the loss of tone of the vaginal walls. The laser acts directly on the vaginal walls, reshaping, toning and stimulating tissue and regenerating collagen.

The advantage of the Mona Lisa Touch treat-ment is that it is a safe alternative to using oestro-gen replacement therapy, avoids surgical treatment for vaginal laxity and is helpful in treating minor degrees of urinary incontinence. It is extremely useful for treating patients who have had breast cancer and cannot be given hormone replacement therapy.

These innovative and exciting treatments that are now available are only at the Chingford Dental Clinic and at the BMI Cavell Hospital.

New treatments offered at Chingford Dental Clinic

A n exciting new chapter is about to begin for Haven House, with the opening of its new Holistic

Care Centre – allowing the hospice to provide a broader range of specialist services to an increasing number of local life-limited children.

The centre was opened by HRH Duch-ess of Gloucester, with a reception on the lawns of the hospice’s idyllic Wood-land setting. The building – a contempo-rary glass and cedar addition, to the locally listed White House in Mallinson Park, Woodford Green, will blend pur-pose-built modern design with the tradi-tional Arts and Crafts style of the original building. The new centre will provide: -New consultation facilities for clinicians including Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, to meet with local life-limited children, bringing care much closer to home -Multi-training space for staff, volunteers, local groups and Haven House Buddies (siblings of un-well children) -Confidential assessment areas for parents and children -A dedicated room for music and other therapy sessions (at present the hospice uses a sensory room for music therapy and only one activity can happen at any one time) -New physiotherapy and complementary therapy services Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of the hospice, said of the new building; ‘This is such an exciting devel-opment for Haven House and the largest single investment that we have made for local life-limited children and families since we opened our doors in 2003.’

‘The Holistic Care Centre will enable us to pro-vide vital additional activities and a more compre-hensive care package for all who use our services.’

Mike added; ‘We have had wonderful support from a number of funders, charitable trusts and local businesses in getting the build completed and on budget. However we will be looking to our local community more than ever to get these new ser-vices up and running and to ensure that they are

sustainable for future generations.’ Karen Parsons, mum to Yasmin (4) who pre-

sented HRH The Duchess of Gloucester with a gift from children who use the hospice, said; ‘Yasmin and I were thrilled to be part of the Holistic Care Centre opening today. I know how much Yasmin enjoys coming to Haven House and this new facility will help many more local families have access to specialist play, music and therapy services.’

Karen from Woodford Green, added; 'Today has been a lovely end to the summer as Yasmin starts school tomorrow which marks a new phase in our lives.'

Costs for the build so far total £665,000, which have been met by a mix of by Government funding, charitable trusts and ‘gifts in kind’.

Haven House would like to thank the following benefactors, who have contributed to the costs of build:

NHS England: In 2013 Haven House was awarded a £464,000 grant from NHS England, as part of a £60million boost to hospices across England, to build a Holistic Care Centre as an annex to the hospice.

Clear Architects: Loughton based company which designed and oversaw the build at a significantly reduced rate www.cleargb.com

DEAN SHULTON Chiropodist What is a fungal nail infection?

A fungal nail infection or Onychomycosis is where fungus (closely related to athletes foot) affects the hard material (keratin) that makes up

the nails. It can affect any part of said nail, slowly devel-oping over time, and causing the nail to become discol-oured, thickened and distorted. The nail colour can turn white, black, yellow or green. It is not usually painful at first, but the nail can look unsightly. However, if it is left to continue, it may cause pain and discomfort.

Fungal nail infections can be treated and usually fully cured, however some treatments can take several months to work, and it can be a bit if a bind, but well worth it in the long run. As comfortable feet, help with comfortable mobilisation. Treatments can be prescribed or bought over the counter, a pharmacist will advise you if you choose this route. Always read the leaflet, before using the product in case you have any unwanted side effects.

Dusting your shoes with athletes foot powder occa-sionally, may also help to prevent re infection. As always, if you are unsure of anything, consult your Doctor.

Hi, I’m Michelle, a passionate and professional clinical hypnotherapist. I was trained on prestigious Harley

Street and now bring all my learnings and expertise to my comfortable and relaxing home practice in Chingford.

I often get asked… what is hypnotherapy? How does it work? If I come to see you can you make me do anything I don’t want to do? Will you make me bark like a dog? What does it feel like to be in a state of hypnosis? All valid questions for someone that hasn’t been hypnotised before!

To explain hypnotherapy and how it works it’s best to start with defining two different parts of our brain: the conscious and the subconscious. The subconscious part of the brain is the part that learns from past experiences how to behave and react in certain situations. It is the part that we are not consciously aware of but that powerfully impacts on how we think, feel and behave. The conscious part of our mind is the part that argues and questions, the part that worries, analyses and for some is difficult to switch off when trying to sleep or relax. When I put my clients in a state of hypnosis we close off the conscious part of the mind and talk directly to the subconscious. Using powerful suggestions and visualisations we are able to quickly and effectively change the reference points that your subconscious holds, ensuring your subconscious

Ever wondered about

Hypnotherapy?takes on board these suggestions as your new reality. It is an extremely powerful way to change unwanted habits and behaviours and remove any limitations or obstacles that are in your way to leading a happy and healthy life.

For hypnotherapy to work someone needs to WANT to improve their life; they need to want to transform something. I cannot make anyone do anything they do not inherently want to do. For instance, if someone comes to see me to quit smoking just because a family member wants them to but they themselves do not, then I cannot make them quit. I can, however, give that person all the tools they need, the strength and motivation to stop easily if deep down that is what they do want. Therefore, I won’t make you bark like a dog (unless of course that is something that will bring you closer to your life goals!).

Every person experiences the state of hypnosis differently, in fact no two times for the same person will feel identical. It’s best described as being in a trance – somewhere between awake and asleep – for some, a bit like being in a daydream. Sometimes you may hear every word I say but other times consciously remember nothing... either is completely normal! All of my clients report back how much more calm and in control they feel after just their first session – it is a very pleasurable and relaxing but also life-transforming experience.

My clients come to see me for many different reasons: to lose weight, relieve anxiety and stress, overcome fears and phobias, sleep better, manage pain, stop smoking or simply just to relax and unwind. How can I help you transform your life?

Page 27: The Chingford Directory - November/December 2014

I first saw Emily when she was feeling down about life. She had a lot going for her but just couldn’t see the positives. She was feeling stressed and anxious and found it difficult to sleep at night.

Personal life transformations

“For me, visiting Michelle is a deeply relaxing experience that helps me to cope with the stresses of a

busy life. Until last year, I hadn’t really considered hypnotherapy to help me cope with feeling stressed and

overwhelmed, but I’m glad I listened to a friend’s recommendation and gave it a try. Hypnotherapy is now

part of my wellbeing routine and I visit Michelle when I need a boost and to help me feel on top of things.

Thanks, Michelle!”

“..Michelle was fantastic. I was slightly nervous at the first session but she was very quick to put

me at ease and I found the actual hypnosis really relaxing. I noticed a change in my attitude towards food

straight away. It has been so easy to eat the right foods in sensible amounts when I’m actually hungry and

for no other reason, I just wish I had done it years ago and saved myself a lot of heartache and fat clothes!

I would really recommend hypnotherapy with Michelle if you are sick of diets and feel like you have to

either deny yourself the food you think you want or put up with being fat.. you simply stop wanting the bad

food so that you are free to lose weight and be healthy!”

“I had been smoking for most of my life and had tried unsuccessfully to quit several times. I tried

hypnosis as a last resort – I wish it had been my first! Michelle made me realise that smoking was not part

of what defined me, and I was actually able to quit altogether really easily. It amazed me how I actually

didn’t want a cigarette any more following hypnosis. Many thanks from me (and my wife and children too!).”

If any of the above has struck a chord and you would like to learn more, or to take advantage of my special introductory offer and book a session, please do

call or email

07749 465 [email protected]

I look forward to hearing from you and working with you to start your own powerful life transformation!

T he Copped Hall Choir is hoping to gain an even wider audience this year for a Christ-mas carol CD that reached eight countries

last Christmas. The choir, formed in 2009 to raise funds for the

Copped Hall restoration project, has gone from strength to strength.

“In a way it’s been a rags to riches story,” says Stephen Fellowes, who co-produced the CD and whose daughter Katherine is the musical director and inspiration behind the choir. “A miscellaneous group of volunteers who were working at Copped Hall got together to sing. They now perform at sell-out concerts and have recorded a CD to professional standards.”

Choir members are mostly Friends of the Trust, augmented by some invited singers to boost vari-ous sections. Many of the 24 singers also belong to other local and national choirs. They sent cop-ies of the CD to friends and family in the USA, Canada, Australia, Poland, Spain, Bulgaria, Ger-many and Austria, as well as all over the UK.

Much of the choir’s success has been due to Katherine Fellowes’ enthusiasm and encourage-ment through an intense period of rehearsals before every concert. Last year, the choir had four recording sessions (singing “God rest you merry, gentlemen” in the middle of August!) The final session included an invited audience who joined in the boisterous wassails and more familiar carols.

The CD has 19 tracks, some of which will be repeated at the choir’s two carol concerts at Copped Hall this year – on December 6 and 14 at 3pm. Every year Katherine selects a mix of tradi-tional carols and folk songs as well as the well-known favourites, often writing her own arrange-

ments. The choir is accompanied by pianist Nor-man Lansdown-Davis.

The CD is available (£10 plus p+p) from www.coppedhalltrust.org.uk, which also lists other events at Copped Hall.

Katherine Fellowes

K atherine studied at Trinity College of Mu-sic with Linda Hirst, Sophie Grimmer and Robert Aldwinkle. She is an active per-

former, producer, and musical direc-tor. Over the years her work has in-cluded assisting and collaborating with ex-offenders in the London area, with the organisa-tion Escape Artists; helping in music production classes for the charity Crisis; and leading children's theatre workshops in Ban-galore, India. Most recent work includes appearances with her early music vocal group The Erato Consort and performances with her professional opera com-pany Meridian Opera. The latter specialises in making opera accessible in the community and, as well as concerts, has provided a number of highly successful Gilbert and Sullivan workshops pro-duced and directed by Katherine.

The Copped Hall Trust The Copped Hall estate has a history dating back to Domesday. The present Copped Hall was built between 1751 and 1758, the existing mansion replacing an earlier Tudor house. In 1917 a fire gutted the mansion, which was then left to decay until aggressive development proposals prompted a nine-year campaign to save the overgrown and vandalised site. The campaign led to the formation of the Copped Hall Trust, which acquired the freehold in 1995. The Trust’s aims were to carefully restore the mansion and gardens for educational, cultural and community use; substantial progress has been made in the past 19 years but there is much more to be done. Further information on www.coppedhalltrust.org.uk

In 2013 she was the founding conductor of Sing, Sing, Sing, a Woodford-based choir for new sing-ers. She has been the Musical Director of The Copped Hall Choir since 2009.

T he City of London Corpo-ration, which manages Epping Forest, is remind-

ing visitors that anyone found collecting fungi from the forest will be liable for prosecution.

2013 was a bumper year for fungi in the UK because of its unusually long, wet summer, and Epping Forest Keepers, who enforce the ancient woodland’s bylaws, issued hundreds of verbal warnings and launched 20 suc-cessful prosecutions in court with an average fine of £230 – an all-time high.

Many of the fungi species found in Epping Forest are of national importance and a major reason why it is designated as a ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’ and a ‘Special Area of Conservation’.

There are many rare and declining fungi species in Epping Forest and the City Corporation says they should be protected for future generations to enjoy. According to its Superintendent, collecting fungi from the Forest spoils the visitor experience and deprives insects and animals like deer of a valuable food source - as well as impacting on the woodland’s biodiversity by breaking the complex cycle of decay and renewal.

Paul Thomson, the City of London Corporation’s Superintendent at Epping Forest, said: “Epping Forest is London’s biggest green space; it is now attracting more than 4.5million visits every year. And if even a

significant minority of them come to forage, we will gradually see the disappearance of some of our most beautiful species of fungi and other fruits – it is not sustainable in the long-term.

“We are asking our visitors to come out and enjoy Epping Forest but to leave the fungi untouched for everyone to experience, to allow them to spore and for our wildlife to fatten up before the cold winter months arrive.”

The City of London Corporation runs 11,000 acres of green space in London, including Hampstead Heath, West Ham Park and Highgate Wood. Foraging is a bylaw offence across all its sites.

D id you know that a unique blend of com-munity and business networking is sweep-ing the country? It’s called Link4Growth,

a not-for-profit organisation that was started in April 2011. There are currently more than 70 groups nationwide, and the good news for Waltham Forest is there is one in Chingford!

We are three local businesswomen, who are passionate about supporting the local community; Jane Walker (Walker Websites), Fiona Flaherty (Meducate Healthcare) and Debra Oakaby (Coach Me Smart). We launched Link4Growth Chingford in March 2014 to try to help local people to work together, share skills and help create a thriving community where people support and encourage each other.

Since Link4Growth Chingford began, we have held regular networking events, where people can get together and meet in a pressure-free and informal environment.

As a not-for-profit organisation we offer an affordable way for businesses and entrepreneurs to share skills and strengthen local business and community networks for the benefit of all local people.

Link4Growth Chingford meets on the first Thursday of every month at Goals Soccer Centre Chingford (Morrison Avenue, E4 8SN). The meet-ings run from 9.30 to 11.30am, and everyone is welcome to come along and find out more. There is no joining fee, you just pay £3 each time you attend a meeting to help cover the costs of room hire, refreshments and other expenses.

There are many benefits to be had, whether you’re looking for a job, or a particular service or

product, starting a business or perhaps you just want to get some experience of talking to other people, Link4Growth Chingford will put you in contact with those who might be able to help you and vice-versa.

You can engage and collaborate with residents whom you might not otherwise meet, make new friends, build your self-confidence and get new ideas and inspiration, simply from meeting differ-ent people.

In August we hosted the first ever Link4After-noon Tea, which proved a huge success. Lots of new people attended, with calls for more events like this one. Indeed, we have a Christmas buffet on Thursday 4th December between 12noon and 2pm, for just £8 per head.

Link4Growth Chingford has also attended sev-eral local events as an exhibitor including the borough’s International Women’s Day celebra-tions, the Chingford Village Festival and Waltham Forest Council’s Jobs Fair. We seem to attract lots of interest wherever we go because commu-nity and business networking in a friendly and informal setting makes a lot of sense and it’s on your doorstep!

Even if you can’t attend our meetings, you can keep informed and up to date by visiting the Link4Growth website, which includes lots of free advice and information.

Link4Growth Chingford

For more information on Link4Growth Chingford visit www.link4growth.biz/l4g, www.facebook.com/L4G.Chingford or just pop along to one of our meetings held on the first Thursday of every month.

S eattle born Sharlyn Hidalgo has worked as a psychotherapist and has a

masters degree in psychology. She has multiple interests; as a circle leader, healer, Native American specialist, Egyptian mysteries teacher and as an author of this enlightening book on tree lore.

5 trees are described in detail with a drawing for recognition; each tree has respective deities, totems, ruling planets and month of power. Their uses in history and in healing, for rituals and a higher appreciation and understanding of their spiritual energies are detailed. Respective rune letters, ogham letters, symbols, etc., flesh out this information.

This is a highly personal perspective from an American with ancestors from Britain and much of the information provided is channelled with love and goodwill for peace, health and joy. She describes birch, rowan, alder, willow, ash,

hawthorn, oak, holly, hazel, apple, vine, ivy, reed, blackthorn and elder. Also provided is information on silver fir/pine, gorse/furze, heather/mistletoe, white poplar/aspen, yew, the grove, spindle, honeysuckle and beech. The book's strength for me was in the guided meditations which I enjoyed, gained insight from, and was helped to develop a closer relationship with each tree. If you are seeking a beginners book to give your an appreciation of European trees that takes you through the year with ritual and inspiration, you will get something

from this creative book. It will certainly enhance your connection with trees of all kinds local to our area.
