The Christian’s Stewardship

1 Kings 20:39-41 And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king; and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver. And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.

1. Definition of Stewardship

A. From Greek, “Oikonomos” – from “oikos” meaning house i.e. management of a household.

B. “Pisteuo” – trustee – one to whom something is entrusted e.g. Entrusted with gifts - 1 Peter 4:10 according as each hath received a gift, ministering it among yourselves, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God

C. “Metochos” – a partner and fellow-worker with God - 1 Corinthians 3:9 For we are God's fellow-workers: ye are God's husbandry, God's building.

2. God owns Everything

A. This world. Psalm 24:1 – “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein.”

B. Our lives. Galatians 2:20 – “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me…”

C. Our Possessions - I Chronicles 29:12-14 – “Both riches and honor come from You, and You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; in Your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all… for all things come from You, and of Your own we have given you.”

1. Definition of Stewardship

3. Three Areas of stewardshipA. Sharing with others our material possessions - I Tim.

6:17-19 – “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”

B. Develop and use our God-given abilities for service in the kingdom - I Pet. 4:10 – “As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God… that in all things, God may be glorified.”

C. Keep our body strong and healthy for service, not to abuse our body - I Cor. 3:16 – 17 – “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him.”

1. Definition of Stewardship2. God owns everything

4. Principles of Stewardship

A. God owns everything - we are simply managers or administrators acting on his behalf

B. One day each one of us will be called to give an account of how we have managed what the Master has given us.

C. Faithful stewards who do the master’s will with the master’s resources can expect to be rewarded incompletely in this life, but fully in the next. Matthew 25:21.

1. Definition of Stewardship2. God owns everything3. 3 Areas of stewardship4. Principles of Stewardship

A. Responsible - 2 Timothy 2:4 - No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

B. God's total sovereignty - Job 1:21 - And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

C. Giving of our very best - Colossians 3:23-24 - Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

The Christian's Service (fitly framed together)

Once a new disciple has learned enough to teach another, he becomes a contributing member of the church.

The first thing he should be aware of is his stewardship.

Having thus firmly rooted, he moves on to find his place among the body of Christ to be fitly framed together.

1. Three Key Passages

A. Ephesians 2:19-22 - Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God...

B. Ephesians 4:7-16 - And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ...

C. 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 - For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ... Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

2. God gives gifts toevery Christian

A. Matthew 25:14-30 - For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey...

B: The dual purposes of these “gifts” are Ephesians 4:12: “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry” and “for the edifying of the body of Christ”.

C. We must be prepared for every good work (2 Timothy 2:20-22) to look for opportunities for our gifts to be used- 1 Corinthians 16:9, 2 Cointhians 2:12-13, Revelations 3:8.

1. Three Key Passages

3. Diversity of gifts

A. The body of Christ has many members Romans 12:4-5 - For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

B. Members have differing gifts and abilities - Romans 12:5-8 - So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us...

C. God has appointed several different functions in the church - 1 Corinthians 12:28-30 - And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues...

1. Three Key Passages2. God gives gifts to

every Christian

4. Three Challenges

A. To be aware of the different ways that members can serve in the body.

B. To encourage members to develop those functions that best suit their abilities.

C. To provide direction and opportunity for those willing and prepared to serve.
