Have you been to the pantomime?35 Years

Why not! You’re missing out on a good laugh. The ladies of Williamstown Players Group have been acting out a Pantomime in Williamstown for the last.....years.

So get a group of friends together make a night of it have an early dinner, a wine at the ho-tel or Wine Bar and have a night at the theatre (or Williamstown Institute).

Here some tips on how to be “A Good Pantomime Audience Member”

It’s meant to be a lot of fun for everyone, including the actors. Here’s how to ensure every-one has a great time!

Be enthusiastic! One of the things a pantomime actor hates is the audience sitting there silently throughout the whole thing.

If an actor tries to start up some audience participation, go with it.

Cheer the good characters and boo the bad characters. Don’t worry about offending the actors who play the baddies - they want you to boo them! It gives them something to work with.

Clap at the end of songs. Pantomimes generally have songs in them, and it takes a lot of courage to sing on stage.

Laugh at jokes. Actors have probably spent literally weeks perfecting their comic timing. The least you could do is laugh.

React to whatever happens. It makes everyone feel like their hard work has paid off, makes their confidence grow and this and adds to the quality of performance. Don’t distract fellow audience members. That means no rustling sweet wrappers and no loud talking.

There will usually be a slow song either during or just before the final bows. This is your cue to do concert style arm waving. Its little things like this that really makes actors feel happy and like you were a great audience.

Most importantly, have fun! If actors can see you’re having fun, they’ll have fun too! And fun is infectious, so hopefully it’ll spread to the rest of the audience!

Williamstown & Districts Historical Society

Ref. Williamstown Mural

The Victoria Creek Reserve (aka “the duck pond” and one time swimming centre of Wil-liamstown) has more to offer travellers and locals than a barbecue, playground and toilet facilities . On the Northern side of the reserve a wonderful mural covers most of the wall that helps support Victoria Terrace. The mural is made up of 46 separate paintings, each de-picting a part of the history of Williamstown and the surrounding district, a history that goes back to 1853.

If you take the time to have a look, this mural gives you some idea of the diversity of ven-tures undertaken by the people who came to live, to work and raise a family in the district when times were really tough. The timber industry, beekeepers, pastoralists, mining, or-chards, blacksmiths, reservoir building and many more are represented. It is all part of the history of Williamstown and if you look around you will find that much of it is still going on today. Many of the buildings depicted are still here, the industries continue and the family names will be familiar to many.

The Mural was commissioned to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Williamstown and celebrate the area’s history. The artist, John Whitney, projected the images onto the wall at night to mark them out and then painted them in daylight with assistance from community members. Williamstown Community Council covered the cost.

Do yourself a favour and take some time to soak up a piece of local history, fantastic!

Note: Williamstown Historical Centre has produced a brochure about the mural which is available from most retail outlets within the Town

Step 1Get Mum to preheat oven to 180C. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper.Step 2Get mum to use an electric mixer to beat the butter, sugar and golden syrup until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolk and beat until just combined. Add flour, ginger, cinnamon and cloves and stir to combine. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. Wrap in plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to rest.Step 3Divide dough into 2 even portions. Roll a portion out on a lightly floured surface to a 5mm-thick disc. Use an 8cm-diameter round pastry cutter to cut discs from the pastry. Get mum to use a small sharp knife to cut a small 1cm wedges from 2 opposite sides of a disc to create a pumpkin shape. Use your fingers to gently smooth and round the edges. Place in the fridge to rest.Step 4Roll remaining dough out to a 5mm-thick disc. Use the top half of a gingerbread man cutter to cut the head and arms from the disc. Get mum to use a small sharp knife to cut the bottom half into a ghost shape. Place on the remaining tray. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes to rest.Step 5Get mum to bake in preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden. Set aside to cool.Step 6To make the royal icing, place the egg white and lemon juice in a small bowl. Gradually add the icing sugar to form a smooth paste. Divide the icing into 2 even portions. Tint a portion using the orange colouring. Spread the icing evenly over each of the pumpkin shapes. Use a small sharp knife to trim the licorice strap into small triangles to create eyes and mouth. Attach to biscuits. Cut sour strap into 1mm-thick strips, wrap around a skewer to create a vine. Attach to the top of each pumpkin. Set aside to set.Step 7Spread the white icing evenly over the ghost cookies. Pipe chocolate gel onto the ghosts to create eyes. Sprinkle evenly with glitter to create a shimmer. Set aside to set completely.

On Sunday 20th September, the Lyndoch Bowling Club held its 2015/16 Pennant Season Open Day. This celebration also included the official opening of the new extension to our Clubrooms. A short speech thanking our sponsors, life members , foundation members etc. Was followed by cutting the ribbon by our President, Darren Green, assisted by David Hausler. The opening of the greens was Then cele-brated with the first jack being put down by Sue Drummond who was the 2014/15 Ladies Club Singles Champion. The jack was placed by Trevor Noble and the first bowl was put down by David Hausler. .

Two short games of 8 ends was played and then a beautiful afternoon tea was enjoyed by all.

The club welcomes any new members who would like to try their hand at lawn bowls and would enjoy playing in a competitive pennant season. We will be hosting our Night Bowls competition again this year with the season starting on Tuesday 13th October 2015 at 7pm. A sausage sizzle will be provided at the half time break along with tea and coffee and of course the bar is open throughout the night. If you would like to enter a team or just an individual entry, please contact Darren Green on 0400 044339.

Love the Place You Live …

and Do Something About it!

If you are keen to help reform and reinvigorate the Southern Barossa, if you ‘Love

the Place You Live’ and have ideas for the management of recreation parks, halls,

main streets and community events in the Southern Barossa or to promote local

business, you are encouraged to come along and be involved.

Wednesday 21st October7 pm at St Jakobi Lutheran school

Championing the catch phrase, ‘Love the Place You Live’ - the push is on for members of the broader Southern Barossa community and businesses to leverage off the Barossa Council’s Re-defining Community Committees’ (RCC) Project to extend the successes of the Southern Barossa Alliance to re-invigorate the community and business activity in the Southern Barossa.

It is intended that the SBA will play a leading role in supporting Volunteer Advisory Groups, the Tour Down Under, Southern Barossa Sporting Hub, Southern Barossa Recreation Hub (including marine recreation on the Warren Reservoir), Southern Barossa Aged Care Hub, Signage in the Southern Barossa, Southern Barossa facilities and business map, Youth Recreation Facilities, Winemakers vs Comedians Fringe cricket match etc.

An outcome of the RCC project is that almost all of the Community Committees will become Vol-unteer Support Groups, providing advice and some volunteer support to the Council on the oper-ation and development of our community’s physical and cultural assets (parks, halls and historical data). Recent discussions by a few passionate locals has identified the opportunity to morph the SBA to vibrantly represent the whole Southern Barossa Community and to support the communi-ty committees. Focal areas can include: Community health and wellbeing, strategic projects and new initiatives to upgrade current and build new community facilities, advocacy for businesses and community organisations, town planning, public amenity upgrades, cultural activities, destination promotion (Tourism), business opportunities, education services, youth activities/facilities, aged care, grant applications and safe keeping of community funds. An interim SBA Committee was formed to revise the SBA constitution and progress the transi-tion of the SBA to a whole of community representative body. Any questions please contact Simon Taylor Ph: 0439509207.

G’ day folks

So September is coming to an end and spring has arrived, maybe it’s a good time to start

thinking of the coming summer, making sure our gutters are clear and the area around our

homes are also clear of debris. If you are up a ladder please be careful and maybe have some

with you to steady the ladder.

We at the brigade are now starting to think of the summer and this is showing in our training

on Wednesday nights which is aiming towards scrub and bush fires. The crews are getting

back into using our forestry hoses and training our new members in the use of. Some of you

may have heard our sirens activating on Wednesday training nights - this is so we practice our

burn over drills on both appliances as they have different characteristics so please bare with

us, as this is part of an annual certification that all CFS members have to comply with. We

will do our best to stop using the sirens by 9pm.

So until next month please drive safely and if you have to report an emergency please call 000

- any other enquiries feel free to ring the station on 8524 6405.

October 2015

Welcome all to another edition of my monthly news update.

In the past month I have been focusing on rural health, as part of my responsibilities as Shadow Parliamenta-ry Secretary for Health.

This entailed meeting a delegation from the National Rural Health Student Network and discussing matters about encouraging and providing more health professionals into our rural communities.

As everyone would know now, Malcolm Turnbull is our new Prime Minister, and I will be continuing to advocate on behalf of the Wakefield electorate, in regards to the impact the policies from the Coalition Gov-ernment are having within my local community.

One of these policy concerns surrounds the proposal to privatise Australian Hearing.

As I have mentioned previously, I have been campaigning to put an end to the Coalition Government’s pro-posal to privatise Australian Hearing. Australian Hearing is a government organisation that provides essen-tial hearing services to eligible Australians.

Australian Hearing has offices in the Barossa, Elizabeth, Salisbury and Two Wells. It also has a bus which provides hearing checks and services all over the country.

If the government goes ahead with its plans to privatise Australian Hearing I am concerned what it will mean for communities like ours.

For people looking for Justice of the Peace services within our office, services are provided on Tuesday morn-ings – 9am to 12 noon, Wednesday – 9am to 5pm and Thursday – 9am to 12 noon.

Please continue to access the electronic survey on my website, which enables me to specifically focus on mat-ters that are of utmost importance, when representing you in Canberra.

Please contact my website at www.nickchampion.com.au on these or other Commonwealth issues. Alterna-tively you can follow me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/nickchampion
