From the preacher’s desk….. “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and
of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the
age.” (Jesus – from Matthew 28:18-20)
As most of us read this familiar text, one thing comes to mind, almost without exception… EVANGELISM. And by evangelism, we
mean bringing someone to an understanding of the gospel that results in their baptism and being saved. That’s sort of where our
understanding of this “charge” seems to end. But if you look a little more closely, you discover that what Jesus is “commiss ioning”
the church to undertake is more than an initial conversion … it’s MAKING DISCIPLES.
Making disciples begins with conversion, but continues to the process of maturity and growth. Making disciples involves
the entire process of BECOMING A FAITHFUL AND MATURE FOLLOWER of Jesus. Making disciples takes time. Making disciples
requires sharing our lives. Making disciples requires transparency and honesty. Making disciples requires commitment to Bible
study and prayer.
All of our relationships, those with “one another” as well as those with the world, are to be aimed at helping each other
become disciples….faithful, mature disciples of Jesus! The Hebrew writer talks about us “spurring one another on toward love and
good deeds”. Jesus says that we are the “salt of the earth” and “light of the world”.
Making disciples is the primary work of the church…of every believer. That involves evangelism, but it continues until the
day we meet Jesus face to face. We are in the “disciple making” business. Every facet of the work and activity of the church is
aimed at “growing up into the image of Christ”…. And remember, we’ve received this charge from the One who holds “all authority
in heaven and earth” and that “He is with us always, even to the end of the age.”
