In his third of three volumes on the Life of Jesus, Pope Benedict XVI offers us his perspective on this verse from Gala-tians. He begins by reminding us that for Luke, author of today's Gospel, con-text in world history was an important consideration. At the time of Jesus’s conception there was a worldwide gov-ernment, a commonality of law, a uni-versal language and expanding com-merce. The world was celebrating the Pax Augustus. In this time of widespread wellbeing, the world was ready for a Savior. Benedict writes, “Only now can a message of universal salvation, a uni-versal Savior, enter the world: it is in-deed the fullness of time.” In fact, Ben-edict tells us the name Augustus means “one worthy of adoration” and a particu-lar inscription honoring Caesar Augus-tus referred to him as Savior and Re-deemer. In the first century, who was the Savior whom the world was actually awaiting? The history of the Roman Empire is in-terwoven with the history of salvation that God established with Israel. God has entered world history and become man. “It was not with the timelessness of myth,” Benedict continues, “that Je-sus came to be born among us. Faith at-tached itself to concrete reality.” And the world would never be the same.

A Weekly

Bible Study

January 1 The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy

Mother of God Galatians 4:4-7

Reflecting on the mystery of the Incar-nation, one will invariably be led to ask: Why was Jesus born in the time and place that he was? Today’s second reading offers us an answer, albeit a mysterious one, within verse 4: But when the fullness of time had come… To what exactly do these words refer?

Our search for a simple answer might bring us to consider the following: From the moment of the Divine Con-ception in the womb of the Virgin Mary, the world would never be the same. But there is more.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Mary, the Holy Mother of God; The Octave Day of the Nativity of the Lord; World Day of Prayer for Peace; New Year’s Day Monday: Ss. Basil the Great & Gregory Nazianzen Tuesday: The Most Holy Name of Jesus Wednesday: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Thursday: St. John Neumann Friday: St. André Bessette; First Friday Saturday: St. Raymond of Penyafort; First Saturday; TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION “Octave” comes from the Latin word for “eight,” and since eight is one step beyond sev-en, the number of days in a week, it has long been seen as a symbol of perfection, comple-tion, and new beginnings. Early Christians called Sunday the “eighth day,” since it was the day after the Sabbath and a day of resurrected life, the Lord’s Day. By the seventh century, people regarded the eight days after Easter Sunday as one great day, an octave, one glori-ous feast when people were forbidden to fast or kneel. In the seventh century, Pentecost ac-quired an Octave, too. Christmas didn’t claim the honor of a continuous feast, but it did get an Octave Day. January 1 is the oldest Marian feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was original-ly a feast of the motherhood of Mary, although for centuries until 1969 it was called the Feast of the Circumcision. Our reformed calendar follows the earlier tradition of celebrating Mary as Mother of God. TIME Do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of. —Benjamin Franklin PASSIONS We should employ our passions in the ser-vice of life, not spend life in the service of our passions. —Richard Steele

THE BLESSING WE RECEIVE The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is proclaimed in Numbers as the special blessing for the people of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the invocation of God’s loving kind-ness, the shining glory of God’s face turned to-ward us in love, not away from us in anger. We are blessed by God’s own peace! Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing, which is made visible in the coming of Jesus. In Jesus, the image of the invisible God, God’s face is shown to us and God’s presence is made known to us in faithful and loving kind-ness. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The L bless you and keep you! The L look upon you kindly and give you peace! (Numbers 6:22-27). Psalm — May God bless us in his mercy (Psalm 67). Second Reading — God sent the Spirit of the Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” So you are no longer a slave but an heir, through God (Galatians 4:4-7). Gospel — The shepherds glorified and praised God for all they had heard and seen (Luke 2:16-21). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 1 Jn 2:22-28; Ps 98:1-4; Jn 1:19-28 Tuesday: 1 Jn 2:29 — 3:6; Ps 98:1, 3cd-6; Jn 1:29-34 Wednesday: 1 Jn 3:7-10; Ps 98:1, 7-9; Jn 1:35-42 Thursday: 1 Jn 3:11-21; Ps 100:1b-5; Lk 4:14-22a Friday: 1 Jn 5:5-13; Ps 147:12-15, 19-20; Mk 1:7-11 or Lk 3:23-28 [23, 31-34, 36, 38] Saturday: 1 Jn 5:14-21; Sal 149:1-6a, 9b; Jn 2:1-11 Sunday: Is 60:1-6; Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-13; Eph 3:2-3a, 5-6; Mt 2:1-12

Our Christmas Environment

Through the kind generosity of two of our

parishioners we have added to our Christmas Nativity: the camel and the seated ox.

They have now become part of our permanent Fontanini statuary. The ornaments that adorn the trees on the altar, the wreaths,

the swags at the windows, and wall hangings in the narthex are all handmade by one of our flower ministers.

They are made with all natural materials gathered locally: stems, leaves, berries, pinecones and flowers. Through these endeavors we celebrate creation and life

and we honor God the Father, Creator of heaven and earth. We are grateful to our flower ministers, men and women of our parish,

who creatively work to design a prayerful Christmas environment for all of us. Also you will see the “Messenger Angel” at the Saint Joseph altar.

This statue has also been donated to the parish. The scripture related to Saint Joseph and the angels is framed and accompanies the display.

We are humbled by the outpouring of time, talent and treasure among our parishioners to make our Christmas decorating

beautiful and a source of prayer for all who look upon it.

We invite you to visit our new statue The Messenger Angel Located at the St. Joseph Altar.

If you have offered a Mass in memory of a loved one we invite you to carry the gifts up at Mass. Please notify the usher pr ior to Mass that you will be do-ing so. Thank you! We have a lost and found area in the Narthex near the magazine racks.
