THE RABBIa word from

Once we have read the majority of the Haggadah, filled ourselves with Pesach delicacies and drunk our third cup of wine, our seder takes a peculiar turn. We fill an extra cup, open the door, and imagine Elijah the prophet coming into our home for a quick sip of wine before moving on to the next Jewish home. He has a busy night. This quaint mini-ritual has made its way into Hollywood and to Saturday Night Live skits. One time when I was a young teenager, I snuck out of my

host’s house shortly before they opened the door, dressed in a white kittel and a tallit covering my face and hands, and waited for them. There were screams when the door was opened. The practice of welcoming Elijah to our seder is a very old one, and is attributed to an incident from Elijah’s lifetime. It is reported in 1 Kings 19:10 that Elijah complained to God that Israel had “abandoned your covenant.” The midrash does not look favourably upon Elijah’s ill thought of Israel, and says that as atonement, Elijah attends every circumcision and every Pesach seder proving that Israel is still keeping the covenant. We also sing a song about Elijah on Saturday night after havdallah, because the midrash says that on Saturday nights Elijah goes and sits under the Tree of Life and counts all Israel’s merits. Elijah was never allowed to die, but was taken to heaven while still alive. Because of that, we believe that he is still doing these things today. Elijah represents hope, and our unbreakable connection with Jews and Judaism past, present and future. From the most observant to the most assimilated of us, almost all of us still attends some sort of Passover seder and still circumcises our sons. Elijah is also supposed to be the prophet who will come to announce the arrival of the Messiah. But I wonder if the very holding on to the significance and symbolism of Elijah the prophet is what actually brings the Messianic age closer and closer. It is that confidence of connection with the generations of old and new, that hope for continuity and a better tomorrow that keeps our people from disappearing, and encourages us to seek an improved standing in the world. We sing, “Vehi she’ameda la’avotenu velanu,” – “It – God’s promise – is what protected our ancestors and us. More than once in history, foreign nations tried and continue to try to annihilate us, but the holy blessed God saves us from their hands every time.” These words are very similar in theme to the words of Hatikva, the modern State of Israel’s national an-them. “As long as we have a Jewish soul deep inside our souls and we look Eastward for Jerusalem, our two-thousand year old hope and yearning to be a free people in our own land shall never disappear.” Pesach is the celebration of Jewish continuity, and that’s why it’s so joyous for us. We should have confidence in this continuity and find com-fort in the divine promise, but at the same time constantly remember that we have a responsibility to ensure its sustainability. It’s not just something we can leave up to God and assume will be there for us no matter what. It’s an onus weighing heavily on all our shoulders. And so we conclude our Seder with “Leshanah haba’ah birushalayim” – next year in Jerusalem, and continue our Jewish living until the next year, when we make another seder and sing those words again. “Leshanah haba’ah birushalayim.”Chag sameach!

Rabbi Hillel Lavery-Yisraeli

THE CANTOR

There’s a section in the Amidah called the Kedushah, which means “holiness”. At one point, we bow to our left, we bow to our right, and then we respond “Kadosh, kadosh, kadosh,...” while raising our heels on each one of these words. It’s a special moment during which we aren’t permitted to speak or to move and it is one that we cannot utter alone; we must have a minyan.

It begins by evoking Isaiah’s vision of seraphim who, in the pres-

ence of God’s throne, pronounce: “Holy, holy, holy, Adonai Tz’va’ot, the grandeur of the world is God’s glory.” So when we turn to the left and to the right, we are re-enacting the movements of these angels. We imagine that we are looking at these angels and that they are standing at either side of us. Beyond that, we symbolically turn ourselves into angels for that moment. We elevate ourselves. We don’t do it throughout the prayer. We do it sparingly and only for a brief moment. By doing so, we are reminded that holiness, that being the ultimate good and moral being that we can be, is attainable. But we can’t expect to attain that level every second of the day. It is something to strive for. The reality is that we are human. We can strive for greater character, and we can reach it, but it is unfair to ourselves to think that we can be that all the time. The fact that each of us can be an angel is empowering. It also tells us that no other individual is inherently holier than us. It’s spiritual. It’s empowering. It’s democratizing. The fact that we can only recite this section in the company of others, when there is a minyan, is also deeply meaningful. We are not expected to reach this level of holiness alone. We can only be truly Godly in the presence of our peers. May our congregation continue to bring about the best in us. May we be inspired by the bonds of our community and by the words of the Torah and of our prayers to act in a Godly way, one that helps foster a true kahal kadosh. May we recognize that there are angels in our midst; just look in the mirror.

When we last wrote, we were just adjusting to our new roles as co-presidents of the shul. The new board was adjusting to a new structure with portfolios for each key area of our shul’s operation. As we write three months later, there has been a great deal of progress. We were both delighted and surprised this Fall to see our Hebrew school enrollment double in numbers from last year. Rina Rodak, our Hebrew School direc-tor, has implemented a dynamic and well received school program. We have successfully undertaken several joint programs with Temple Anshe Sholom and have several events in place for the remainder of the school year. As well, the period from July through September will

be months of celebration as we welcome five Bar/Bat Mitzvah congregants. Our Syrian refugee committee has successfully raised the required funding to begin the sponsor-ship of a family. The necessary paperwork has been initiated and pending no delays the family will arrive sometime in May. Securing household items to help setup their new home is actively underway. As we all know, our building isn’t getting any younger (and nei-ther are most of us). The board’s house and land committee is un-dertaking an audit of key building elements such as the roof, kitchen equipment, electrical capacity, heating and cooling and plumbing to chart the course for our ongoing maintenance program. Our annual lottery this year will be a Spring affair and is scheduled to be held on Thursday, June 9th. This is an important fun-draiser and part of its success in the past can be attributed to the volun-teers who donate their time to both the planning and to helping out during the event. If you would like to help out with this event, please contact the Shul office.

Our annual Israel Film Festival is being held the weekend of March 19th and 20th. As in the past, one film will be shown on Saturday night, with the remaining two films being shown on Sunday, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. An Israeli lunch will be served on Sunday. Not only are our young congregants celebrating Bar and Bat Mitzvahs this year, the Touch of Klez band is celebrating 13 years together. Mark it in your calendars, the weekend of April 9th and 10th and join us in celebrating this milestone! April 9th will be a Touch of Klez Bar/Bat Mitzvah Shabbat and on Sunday, there will be a BIG party! We look forward to seeing all of you at this very special occasion. Our shul is the spiritual centre of our community. It is also our home and a place where multiple generations can enjoy and benefit from the experience of the Beth Jacob community. As a board, we are looking to ensure that Beth Jacob continues to support the needs of its existing and future congregants. In the near future,

we will be forwarding a survey to our membership asking you for your feedback on a number of topics. The purpose of the survey is to help chart our course for the future. Once we have received and reviewed your responses, we will be holding a Town Hall meeting to discuss with you the data received and as well, provide you with the opportunity to discuss the identi-fied opportunities with the board. We encourage all of our members to participate in the survey and as well join us for this open discus-sion. As we wrap up the book of Shemot in the coming weeks, the Torah describes the experiences of Moses when the community is called upon to build the Mishkan (Tabernacle). Moses is so over-whelmed by the giving nature of the community he has to ask them to stop giving. We have also been so amazed by the ability of our community to give. Your support of Beth Jacob by volunteering your time, knowledge, experience (and of course the occasional shekel) is greatly appreciated.

THE CO-PRESIDENTS

Anne Sanderson and Matthew Ogus

As part of a regular practice session for the Touch of Klez band at Jordan Abraham’s studio, there is, quite often, interesting banter about events taking place in the Hamilton

Jewish community. At one recent practice, one of the members noted that it has been 13 years since the band was formed... “Our Bar Mitzvah year!” said another. The idea took shape in everyone’s mind instantaneously - another opportunity to play, to reconnect with our friends across the community, and, generally, to have a whole lot of fun (with a little bit of mischief!). Touch Of Klez was conceived as a club by Michael Glogauer at Beth Jacob Synagogue where, during announcements at a Shabbat service, he invited anyone interested to join him in putting on a klezmer show. Everyone who showed up was accepted. They had so much fun preparing for the show that they decided to keep it going... a band was born. Since then, Touch of Klez has been performing traditional klezmer music to appreciative audiences

all over Ontario. Based on Eastern European Jewish tradition, the music is infused with elements of cantorial, Gypsy, Turkish, Mediterranean, Latin and even swing to create something that is at once unique and universal. Some of the faces have changed over time but the musical repertoire continues to evolve. So, why not celebrate with us at our Bar Mitzvah party? The fun begins at Beth Jacob Synagogue on Saturday, April 9th when members of the band will be called to the Torah and will read Haftarah. Of course, Touch Of Klez will also be sponsoring the Kiddush. All are cordially invited to join them. On April 10th, at 2pm, it is party time! It’s going to be different from anything the band has done before and it promises to be entertaining! Lots of music, a few surprises and even some nosh will make this a Bar Mitzvah bash for all to enjoy. Contact Hanna at 905.522.1351 or [email protected] today for more information and to buy tickets for the party.
