May 2020 For the past several years, First UMC has embraced the post-Easter season with 50 Days of Prayer. From Easter to Pentecost, we pray each day for our Church’s mission & ministry as

well as for the Church Universal. We pray, “Come, Holy Spirit, Come.”

Believing. As we spend more time in our homes, prayerfully we are

able to spend time reading scripture and devotions. Continue to tune-in to worship & lessons, enhancing what we believe and claim about God, Christ & Spirit.

● Worship on RADIO on Sundays @ 10 AM (91.3 FM). ● Worship ON-LINE through Facebook/YouTube Channel and

website: Sundays @ 10:30 AM & 6 PM; 5-Minute Mondays @ 6:45 AM; Word + Table Wednesdays @ 7:30 AM plus other opportunities as scheduled & promoted.

● J.A.M. Lessons on-line Sundays at 9 AM and Wednesdays at 7 PM.

There are also daily Bible stories on-line and cooking with message! Seekers class will now be meeting on Sundays through Zoom.

Belonging. Many of our small groups and committees are

beginning to meet via Zoom — watch the Email Blast and see our insert for updated information on how to get involved. Weekly scheduled studies & small groups will resume again on site when safely possible, and be assured that Special Events will be re-calendared.

Becoming. We can BE the CHURCH in many ways. The Healthy

Congregation & Care Team says “thank you” to all who made (and are still making) homemade face masks to share with church family members & the community. The Missions committee wants to challenge us to fill a pick-up with food items for the Food Pantry. Note what is most needed on Our Church Family page in this Circuit Rider. And give the gift of life blood at the weekly Red Cross Blood Drives. First UMC’s Blood Drive will be on Monday, May 4 — please go to redcrossblood.org and sign up or call Connie Jensen 402-910-9725.

As they strained to see Jesus rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday He will return from heaven in the same way you saw Him go!”- Acts1:10-11

As we continue celebrate the 50 days to Pentecost, we also need to continue to focus on the Great Commission that Jesus Christ has left us . . . “go and make disciples.”

Sadly, I feel that at times, we are just standing, staring into heaven, waiting for Christ to return.

We have been given a rare opportunity during this time to find new ways to share Jesus Christ with the world around us. I believe that this is a time of blessing; a time of sowing; a time of harvesting; and a time of making new disciples in the name of Jesus Christ. Trust that God is doing amazing things and that we are called to do “Great Acts” in the name of Jesus Christ.

May 3: Love & Serve Our Neighbors Acts 8:4-8, 26-40

May 10: Love, Serve & Build a Community Acts 11:20-26

May 17: Is This Church? Acts 16:22-30

May 24: Sharing What I’ve Learned Acts 16:31-34

May 31 Pentecost: Refreshing Acts 2:1-4, 38-44

Again I continue to pray for all of you and that during this time of “social distancing”, that you have found new ways to connect with you neighbors, family and especially with God.

Peace & Love – Pastor Joe

If God answers “Yes,” He is increasing your faith. If “Wait,” He is increasing your patience. If “No,” He has something better for you. Nicky Gumbel, Alpha

During this pandemic, many of us may be asking important and difficult questions right now. In the post-Easter season, it is a great time to reflect on those life questions in light of the stories of Christ & early Church. This year, it feels so much more like that of the early Christian church where people were gathering in homes and connecting in the ways that they were able including taking care of their neighbors and sharing the Good News of Jesus!

Join us for the Good News sermon series as we are reflecting on six important points inspired by the Alpha lesson, “Why & How Do I Tell Others?” As we embrace this church’s tradition with the 50 Days of Prayer (Easter to Pentecost), we invite the Holy Spirit to come and to fill us and to transform our lives! Let’s pray for the Spirit to guide us as we share our faith story with others!

May 3 / PROCLAMATION Acts 10:39-48

May 10 / PRAYER Acts 4:31-35

May 17 / POWER Acts 3:1-10

May 24 / PERSISTENCE Mark 4:15-20

May 31 / PENTECOST Acts 2:1-12

Church family & friends, until we are able to meet together, stay healthy & safe. May Jesus Christ bless you, inspire you & give you hope!

Grace & Peace, Rev. Cindi

CARE CORNER

Struggling to find balance in your life? The chart listed

to the right just might be able to help you! Stay

tuned for the latest care team videos by Jill

Colegrove & Peg Jeffres.

FYI: The Healthy Congregation Team, on behalf of our church, has recently partnered

with Emerald Care to provide a tablet for connections between residents & family

members AND with Cottonwood House to provide clip boards & card stock

(for crafting) as well as a set of windchimes for their courtyard.

THE BIRTHDAY PARADE! Chuck Athey told Lois that she could not buy him a birthday present and just to let it slide by... “Then the parade started, and I will have something to remember about this birthday. It was a great shock to me but it was so nice. Just an added item: there is a father, mother, and son probably five or six years old that cycle by our place, and I always call to him and he always waves. I don't know his name but I call him "Buddy." They came by after the parade had gone and he ran up and put something on the table on the porch. I ran out to tell him thanks. They were two little rocks that were painted. One said Love Big and the other said Smile. It was a great day to be remembered. Thanks.” -Chuck Athey
