The City of Atlanta encompasses more than 132 mi², yet the population of the metropolitanAtlanta area recently exceeded five million. As people continue to migrate to Georgia’sexpanding capital, more neighborhoods and retail spaces are rapidly sprouting to accommo-date the growth. While the City of Atlanta’s exponential growth was celebrated for its directrelation to higher commerce, residents and city officials did not adequately assess the lessattractive byproduct of record-breaking expansion: the increasing amounts of waste andwastewater and the resulting odorous gases produced by the densely populated area.

Although the new high-value homes and businessesadjacent to Johnson Ferry Road and the neighboringRoswell Road are in prime locations, more than twodozen residents began to feverishly complain. However, their complaints didn’t involve the congested traffic, acommon apprehension in the large metropolis; the resi-dents were voicing valid concerns of the unbearableodors, caused by mercaptans and other exotic gases, escaping the nearby sewage air relief vent shafts justyards from their doorsteps. The vent shafts convey theodorous gases from the 16 foot diameter Nancy CreekSewer Relief Tunnel to the surface.

When the City of Atlanta contacted Purafil and its localrepresentative, Rob Thurman of Lincoln Associates aboutthe lingering odor at the Johnson Ferry Road #2 site,Purafil gathered air flow measurements and began toexert its unparalleled ability to cater to the specific needsof its enduser. An outsourced environmental analyticallaboratory was used to test the air for levels of gaseouscontaminants measured in parts per billion by volume(ppbv). Carbonyl sulfide levels measured 6.8 ppbv and4.8 ppbv of dimethyl sulfide were detected as the odor-ous gases within this area.

Purafil and Lincoln Associates worked cohesively with theengineering firm Jordan, Jones & Goulding (JJG) to offerthe best solution in the shortest possible time. Purafilimmediately provided a temporary Purafil Side Access(PSA) unit with CK-12 modules containing one pass ofPuracarb® media and one pass of Purafil® CP Blend Selectmedia to remove the odors and resolve the complaintswithin two days! The unit was designed to remove odors

at 6,000 cfm and it was installed for one year until thepermanent unit was constructed and delivered to thelocation.

Once the temporary PSA unit at Johnson Ferry Roadproved it could remove the pungent odors effectively, theCity of Atlanta contacted Purafil and Lincoln Associatesthree months later for additional odor control solutionsat the Roswell Road #2 location. Excessive amounts ofhydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptans were detectedas well as carbonyl sulfide and dimethyl sulfide at thissite. The urgency of the problem again required quickaction. Purafil and Lincoln Associates provided a tempo-rary Double Wall (DW) PSA unit designed to removeodors at 20,000 cfm within less than 48 hours! The tem-porary DWPSA was installed for six months until a per-manent solution could be constructed and delivered.

Once Purafillearned of theodor problemsthe City ofAtlanta resi-dents wereexperiencing, the leader ingasphase airfiltration pro-vided a rapidresponse and uniquely catered solutions. The tem-porary units, which were available in just two days, bandaged the stench until more durable units couldbe installed.

The permanent odor solution at Johnson Ferry Road#2 is a single pass Purafil wastewater Deep BedScrubber (DBS) containing patented Odormix™ SPmedia. The DBS removes high concentrations ofodorous gases from the air relief vent shafts. Thecustomized, built-to-order unit is sized for 6,000cfm.

For the Roswell Road #2 site, the permanent instal-lation was a unique Parallel Bed Scrubber measuring15’ long x 8’ wide x 11’ high. This unit was con-structed specifically to meet to the enduser’s needs,

In fact, a 15’ x 15’ roll-up door had to be installedin the Purafil manufacturing plant in order to trans-port the unit outside. Yet, in spite of the unit’s largedimensions and the newly installed door, Purafildemonstrated a speedy turnaround for both City ofAtlanta locations.

Purafil offers complimentary Media Life Analysis(MLA). In order to prevent unnecessary mediareplacement costs, periodic sampling of the media isessential. Purafil’s local representative regularlytakes media samples from the MediaPAK modulesand sends the samples to Purafil. Laboratory techni-cians analyze the media and send a certificate ofanalysis that provides the media’s projected servicelife.
