Short guide for the Vasco da Gama

    Preconference participants

  • 8/8/2019 The City of Malaga [1]

    2/7

Welcome to Malaga. Our city is located in a privileged enclave. The municipality extends over an

area of 398.25 square kilometres and its "de facto" urban population reaches the million

    inhabitants mark.

The climate in Malaga is extremely moderate in winter, with very mild minimum temperatures.

The summers are hot, though tempered by the city's proximity to the sea.

How to move aroundGetting to our city is easy, given the variety of options

available to take you, quickly and easily, to the capital of

the Costa del Sol. And once you are here, choose

whatever means suits you best to move around its

    streets.

Bus: The bus service provided by the Empresa Municipal

de Transportes (Municipal Bus Company) will take you to

any point of the city, every day, though the frequency

varies depending on the route and the day of the week

Car hired Therefore, we would recommend us use the citys taxi service, particularly if you wantto move around when some of the bus routes are not operational, or you want a door to door

service or the comfort of travelling with only the driver for company.

With this in mind, we offer the following useful addresses and telephone numbers: 952 33 33 33

    and 952 04 08 04

Opening HoursThe shops in Malaga open between 9:00 and 10:00; they close for lunch at 13:00 or 14:00, and

open in the afternoon at 16:00 or 17:00 until 20:00 or 21:30. Large shopping centres and

department stores, however, do not generally close at lunchtime. Some shops and all the

shopping centres and department stores open on Saturday afternoon, whilst all shops are

closed on Sundays, except for certain special periods throughout the year when the shops

    have permission to open.

Banks and Savings BanksMost of the banks open at 8:00 or 8:30 and close at 14:00 or 14:30. However, there is an

extensive network of cash dispensers where you can draw out cash it you need to

MealTime. Restaurants and BarsIn Malaga, as in the rest of Spain, meals are usually eaten later than in some other European

countries. Breakfast is normally between 9:00 and 11:00.Lunch is usually eaten between 14:00 and 15:00 and dinner, between 21:00 and 22:00. However,

mealtimes in restaurants are adjusted to the working day and the lifestyle of our visitors, and

therefore one can lunch from 13:00 until about 15:00, whilst dinner is usually served from 21:00

    until about 23:30.

    Theatres and Cinemas

Every day most of the cinemas offer showings from 12:00 onwards until about 00:30.

Theatres and shows usually begin at between 20:00 and 21:00, apart from morning shows,

normally on holidays and Sundays, for the little ones.

There is no place better nor any with a more typically Mlaga name than this tapas bar. The

dcor is spectacular; the bar is made from

the prow of a fishing boat. The ambience is

marine, in keeping with their fish and seafood

specialities from the bay of Mlaga.

-El tintero: Beach of El Palo.El Tintero II is located right at the far eastend of the seafront, and is a huge seafood

restaurant where the waiters charge round

with plates of fish (all costing the same for a

plate) and you shout for, or grab, anything you

like. The fish includes mero, and rosada,

    boquerones (fresh anchovies), gambas

(prawns), calamares, chopos, jibia (different kinds of squid) and sepia (cuttlefish). A great fun

place to eat. A stylish Malaga restaurant.

-Tapeo de Cervantes. St Carcer, 8,0034 952609458 Very high quality ingredients and technical standards of cooking and

presentation. The Menu includes traditional tapas, more unusual tapas and then full meals

including Argentinian Steak and other superb sounding dishes-Antigua Casa de la Guardia Alameda Principal, 18.Great place for a drink and appetizers, at any time of the day

-CanaduPlaza de la Merced, 21 ,Phone - +34 95 2229056This vegetarian restaurant has a smoking area available. Located in the characteristic Malaga

    square La Merced.

-El Chinitas: Moreno Monroy St, 4

In the heart of Mlaga a short walk from the tourist office, this is one of the most establishedrestaurants in town. Many regular patrons consume a round of tapas and drinks at the associated

Bar Orellana next door (which maintains the same hours, minus the midafternoon closing), then

head to Chinitas for a meal. The place is often filled with local residents, which is a good sign.

The menu changes but might include a mixed fish fry, grilled red mullet, shrimp cocktail, grilled

sirloin, or shellfish soup. The service is both fast

    and attentive.

-Clandestino, St Nino de Guevara, 3, +34952219390

The food is very good, very spanish. Take your book

    as little English spoken

-El Pimpi, St Granada 62This is a bustling labyrinth of a place with photos

of famous guests on the walls. The staff are fast

and friendly. Go here for tapas and wine, it is a

    good experience

-Vino Mio, St Alamos 11 952609093This restaurant was consistently wonderful, with great food, attentive service and a fun

atmosphere. Highly recommend the shrimp skewer over couscous
