Melinda Moxley began her gymnastics career at the age of 3 having been taught by her father Jay Moxley, an Olympic level gymnast and diver. Still active, Melinda loves the sport of gymnastics and has taught around the country. In 1995, she started her own business, Gymnastic Movement Arts, and has been teaching gymnastics for over 20 years while striving to maintain a safe and high quality program.

Gymnastic Movement Arts is a mobile, self-esteem motivating gymnastics program for children of all ages. Melinda is a professional member of USA Gymnastics. She attends USA Gymnastics Region One Congress annually to get the most current techniques and progressions for students.

Personal best efforts and achievement are encouraged for every child while also remaining focused on “drills to skills.” Coaches are trained to teach in a positive way that encourages every child to be a “winner” by using their personal best!

Classes and obstacle circuit rotations are created for the individual gymnast and take into consideration both age and ability. Children work on one of the 10 progressive skill levels for floor, balance beam and vault and are evaluated every 3 months.

See page 11 for classes tought by Melinda!

Melinda holds the following certifications from USA Gymnastics:

This coming year, the City of Santa Cruz will observe its 150th birthday with a series of celebrations and events that will not only commemorate the City’s sesquicentennial, but also will provide an opportunity for the community to more fully understand the many valued services, resources and recreational activities provided by the City.In the aftermath of the Gold Rush and the Civil War, Santa Cruz County remained part of the Wild West, a place where basic municipal services like police and fire protection were hodgepodge affairs at best. Santa Cruz was a rough-and-tumble town. Justice was still delivered through the barrel of a gun. During the 1860s, nearly half of the community’s 57 businesses were saloons. In 1866, the California State Legislature produced a series of laws attempting to bring law and order to the region. Four new “townships” were formally incorporated in Santa Cruz County—Santa Cruz, Pescadero (no longer in the County), Soquel (which today is unincorporated), and Pájaro (which later became Watsonville.) The Spanish pueblo of Branciforte and the small community of Seabright—both located east of the San Lorenzo River—were not included in the City’s initial incorporation boundaries.Santa Cruz was still a relatively remote and isolated outpost during this era. Rail transportation had yet to reach the community. Horse-powered wagons and stage lines provided local transport, while schooners and small steamship lines provided passenger and shipping services to the outside world.

In the 1860s, Santa Cruz County had roughly 5,000 residents (men outnumbered women by more than two-to-one). The City of Santa Cruz had a population of approximately 1,000. By 1870, the City of Santa Cruz would more than double in size, to a population of 2,500.150 years later, Santa Cruz is a bustling city, hosting a major university, a diverse economy and business community, a series of arts centers, a public beachfront, a magnificent coastal walkway, a historic downtown, and one of the largest wooden wharves in the United States. We will be celebrating all of this and more at a special 150th birthday party and fireworks show at the Main Beach later next year, on October 1, 2016. Join us in this year-long celebration! ~ Geoffrey Dunn

Dear Visitor,I am here to help save the endangered Santa Cruz tarplant. Non-native grasses are too tall and dense and smother the native wildflow-ers. I like to eat the grass which gives the native wildflowers a place to grow.

Yours Truly,

CREATING A CITYWIDE PLAN FOR THE CITY OF SANTA CRUZ PARKS SYSTEM

The Parks and Recreation Department is developing the 2030 Parks, Recreation Facilities, and Open Space Master Plan. The plan will guide improvements to the Parks System.

The Parks and Recreation Department hired the landscape architecture and planning firm Royston Hanamoto Alley & Abey as the lead consultant for developing the plan. A random phone survey of 300 residents was conducted to gauge the current satisfaction and priorities for Parks and Recreation Department services. Additional input was received from 60 participants during two community meetings, 480 responses to a public input questionnaire, and stakeholder outreach meetings. On October 13, 2015, a Joint Study Session was held with the City Council and Parks and Recreation Commission to discuss high-level topics that arose during the outreach process. A subcommittee of City Council and Parks and Recreation Commission members was formed and will assist staff while they develop and refine the draft recommendations to be included in the plan.

As the process moves forward, you can stay informed of important updates and find ways to contribute at: cityofsantacruz.com/parksmasterplan. For more information, contact Noah Downing, Park Planner at 831-420-5362.

Cattle grazing is an important resource management practice at Arana Gulch to help restore the coastal prairie habitat of the Santa Cruz tarplant, Holocarpha macradenia, is vulnerable to extinction. Historically, Santa Cruz tarplant was found in coastal prairies between Marin and Monterey Counties. As a result of development and habitat destruction, Santa Cruz tarplant is now found at fewer than 20 locations. Arana Gulch is one of the largest of these remnant populations. In the late 1980s, there were more than 100,000 plants here.

After grazing was removed from Arana Gulch in 1988, the Santa Cruz tarplant population declined and there are now fewer than

100 plants. The City of Santa Cruz has been actively trying to restore the Santa Cruz tarplant and habitat since purchasing the property in 1994.

Before European settlement more than 200 years ago, native wildflowers, such as tarplants, were maintained by disturbance processes such as fire and grazing. The new use of the land introduced non-native plant species and displaced many native plants over time. Non-native grasses grow tall and dense, blocking sunlight and out-competing native plants in the process. The cattle help the native wild flowers by keeping the non-native grass height low and leaving patches of bare ground. Visitors may see cattle grazing in the fenced areas at Arana Gulch from approximately October to June each year. The cattle are removed from the property during the Santa Cruz tarplant growing season.

Santa Cruz Tarplant

Properly managed cattle grazing has improved coastal prairies in central California. In the City of Santa Cruz, grazing at the Moore Creek Open Space Preserve has improved habitat for the federally endangered Ohlone tiger beetle. Livestock grazing is used by the East Bay and South Bay park districts, water districts, and landowners to reduce wildfire threat and maintain habitat for many of California’s threatened or endangered plants and animals.

The Parks and Recreation Department will be working with the Natural History Museum on providing educational tours on the restoration effort at Arana Gulch. For more information about habitat management at Arana Gulch, please visit cityofsantacruz.com/habitatmanagementataranagulch.

CITY of SANTA CRUZ PARKS DIVISIONOver the last 2 years, The City of Santa Cruz Parks Division has been making big improvements to the median and center divides on our city streets in the downtown areas and also in neighborhoods. Here is a snapshot of some of our progress! Keep your eyes peeled to see some of our latest upcoming accomplishments!

After Parks & Recreation cleaned up the Eastside triangle median at Morrissey, Soquel and Water Streets, the public requested that a library memorial be placed in the triangle and that this area be renamed as El Portal Park. On Sept 27, 2015, the Parks & Recreation Department hosted the Eastside Library Memorial

Ribbon Cutting and also acknowledged the renaming of the Eastside triangle median as El Portal Park. A monument and plaque was unveiled in the triangle where one of the City’s earliest public libraries once stood.

Last year, to freshen up one of our main gateways into town, Parks & Recreation added a splash of color on Ocean Street in front of the Paradox Hotel, located at Ocean and Dakota Streets. This new drought tolerant landscape is filling in nicely!

We also refreshed our Welcome to Santa Cruz sign and added a new Service Club display at the entrance to the Community at the base of Highway 17!

Additionally, Parks & Recreation median staff continue to maintain and improve the landscapes on Woodrow Avenue located on the Westside of Santa Cruz. In this l o c a t i o n w e h a ve

a selection of water– wise plant material that is low growing, providing a colorful pallet of native and horticultural plants that work well in our area.

THE CORNERSTONE OF OUR COMMUNITY

CELEBRATING OVER 75 YEARSIn setting the cornerstone in 1940, Santa Cruz Mayor Hinkle dedicated the Civic for the “use and enjoyment for the citizens and friends of our community…with the hope that it would survive the ravages of the elements, endure the passage of time and escape the tragedies of nature…for unborn generations” (taken from the dedication ceremony covered in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, circa 1940).

As we move beyond the Civic’s 75th year, we continue to collect memories from the past and create a vision for the future.

VOLUNTEER HELP WANTEDIf you are looking for a way to contribute to your community, Senior Programs has opportunities for you! For many years we have maintained a solid base of volunteer-led “wellness” activities for our senior community. Most of our focus has been on encouraging healthy activities for the body: Yoga, Tai Chi, Line Dance and many others.

We want to expand our programs to encompass the mind and spirit along with the body and you just might be the one who can help us achieve that!

Some possibilities to consider: choir, acting workshops, arts and crafts, outdoor sketching and watercolor, knitting and crochet, Zumba class, bicycling and bike maintenance. These are just some of OUR ideas. What ideas do you have?

Volunteering is a great direct and meaningful way to connect. Give us a call and tell us what your hidden (or not so hidden) talent is and how you would like to bring it to your community! Call 831-420-6180

As the new logo indicates, we changed our name! When Familia Center and the Beach Flats Community Center merged, it became evident that a new identity was needed for a new beginning. Nueva Vista (a new view) seemed to fit the bill. Rest assured that our mission — To empower those who struggle with poverty, exclusion and racism, while assisting them to meet their basic needs — has not changed. Nueva Vista (711 East Cliff Drive) will continue to serve the community as a family resource center. Nueva Vista at 133 Leibrandt Avenue will focus on helping youth achieve academic success.

NUEVA VISTA SERVICES AT 133 LEIBRANDT AVENUEThe focus at Nueva Vista is to continue providing much needed youth programs for low-income, at-risk youth in 3rd-8th grades. The Center is located in the heart of the largely low-income, Latino neighborhood of Beach Flats.

■ Enrichment and educational workshops for low-income youth.

EXHIBITSBIG BASIN’S AUTO TREE: ONE TREE, MANY STORIESJanuary 12, 2016 - April 3, 2016Big Basin is our oldest state park, and it all began at the Auto Tree. In May of 1900, Andrew P. Jill photographed members of the Big Basin Exploration Committee in front of one of its giant redwoods and decided to form the Sempervirens Club in an effort to save Big Basin. After the park became a reality, that giant redwood became known as the “Auto Tree” and people would park cars inside the fire scar to show the great size of the redwood. Explore photographs and postcards of the Auto Tree from 1900 to the present, and learn about redwood ecology and conservation, and the earliest history of our state parks.
