Q1-A Look at source A and answer the questions that follow. [ /5]

SOURCE -A

a) Name the type of plantation Tea Plantation

b) Why does it cost a lot to setup a plantation?

It costs a lot to setup plantations because first a very large area is required then making a clearing

alsomakes it expensive. Then for the initial processing we need a processing plant or factory which again

requires a huge capital. Next construction of a nucleated village for workers also requires huge capital

investment. Provision of basic facilities such as electricity, water and sewers to the village on plantations

also costa lot.

c) As a part of the plantation workforce what perks would you enjoy?

House for family

Entertainment and play areas for children

Basic facilities e.g. electricity, gas, sewers and water

Shops within the village

d) Why is the settlement on a plantation nucleated?

To cut the cost of proving basic facilities e.g. electricity, gas, sewers and water lines

Easier to give instructions

Q.1 b) Look at source B and answer the questions that follow. [ /5]

SOURCE - B

a. Name the life style shown in the given image.

Nomadism / Nomadic Herding / Pastoral Nomadism

b. Why do people adopt this type of living style?

They adopt this type of living style because they need to feed their animals with natural vegetation

which they are not able to find in one place all year round therefore they keep moving.

c. Why is this man carrying a spear?

He belongs to the Masai tribe in East Africa which is a grassland but since they are near Tropical

Rainforest area therefore wild animals from the forest often come and attack their cattle, so to keep

their cattle safe they use spears to kill the wild animals.

d. What are the problems faced by this tribe?

Half the year the weather in grasslands are hot and dry which burns the grass and this tribe is

bound to move around in search of pasture for cattle.

Wildlife protection agencies have banned the tribal movement in parts of the grassland which

leaves a very small area for them to move around and search for pasture.

e. Why do they have very few possessions?

As they keep moving and move their belonging along on their animals therefore they don’t have lots

of belongings.

f. How are they different from the tribe in Pakistan?

The tribe in Pakistan is the Balochi tribe which keeps moving all year round whereas they just move

in one particular season.

Q3. [ /10]

a. Above image shows different forms of renewable resources, discuss few advantages and

disadvantages of these with examples.

Energy Type Advantage Disadvantage

Solar no noise, environment friendly,

can be produced on roof tops,

takes less space

Weather dependent can’t be

made if rainy, stormy or cloudy

Wind environment friendly Noisy -kills birds- weather

dependent-

expensive installation

Strength of the windmill varies

Large wind farms are needed to

produce enough electricity.

Water Dams help control floods

Dams help store water

Requires a huge space

Heavy investment

Geothermal

Inexhaustible

No environmental impact

Pumps can store heat for later

use.

Source is close to volcanic

activity

Some plants use lots of water –

creating water pollution

Supply could change

Cannot be transported

High startup cost

Biomass Can be sustainable

Can be used for different

purposes

Takes a lot of space

Not entirely clean

Expensive

Not easily transported

b. Define sustainability.

Sustainability is a balancing act it means to maintain.Sustainability focuses on meeting the

needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their

needs.

c. Why do we use non-renewable energy sources to produce electricity?

Concentrated energy source – produces comparatively more energy

Reliable

Can be built anywhere

d. How can the government help increase the production of electricity through renewable sources?

Building more dams

Making solar parks

Utilizing the country’s wind corridors to make windmill farms

Facilitating investors

Facilitating and encouraging entrepreneurs

e. How does Pakistan’s economy suffer because of power crisis?

Pakistan’s economy suffers because of power crises in the following ways:

Load shedding -The demand of electricity exceeds supply and hence load-shedding is a common

phenomenon through frequent power shutdowns causing unrest in people and results in violent behaviors.

Agriculture sector- Agricultural productivity of Pakistan is decreasing due to provision of energy for

running tube wells, agricultural machinery and production of fertilizers and pesticides.

Unemployment - Manufacturing units that do not contain their own power generation capacity these

manufacturing companies are closing down with the high rate, and in the result the rate of unemployment of

our country is also increasing.

Effects on industries Decline Of GDP - The GDP is the overall output of what Pakistan earns from its

internal resources because of power crisis we see a decline in the GDP.

Decline of foreign investor- Similarly, healthy environment attracts the foreign investors. It is the foreign

investment which helps country to be counted among developed and prosperous countries. The countries

which witness/experience the foreign direct investment when they fulfill their needs. The needs like basic

infrastructure covering roads, transportation, water supply etc all depend on electricity.

Decreasing Foreign Exchange- Less exports due to less production resulting in decreasing foreign

exchange.

a. Annotate the reasons for having temporary settlements.

Settlements which are occupied for a short time are called temporary settlements. The people

living in deep forests, hot and cold deserts and mountains often dwell in such temporary

settlements. They practice hunting, gathering, shifting cultivation… In these settlements,

people build homes to live in. They make temporary settlements because in Nomadic Herding

they need to find pasture for animals and they move to areas with better vegetation similarly

shifting cultivators move because they rely on agriculture and when the soil exhausts they

move on.

b. Discuss the disadvantages associated with this type of settlement.

No permanent settlement

No education

Poor

Less belongings

Doing thing all over again and again

No proper place to live

Constantly under challenging situation

Q.5 -a [ /5]

i. Which mode of road transportation has more advantages than the other a. train or b.

trailer?

ii. What evidence can you provide to justify your answer of the above question?

I think in today’s situation a trailer suits better as trains have lots of problems such as less

fuel, less locomotives, fixed route, train delays, etc also to reach its exact location if train is

used the process of loading and un loading and reloading will take place causing

damage..etc..Whereas on a trailer things will be loaded once and unloaded only at the required

place.

Q5-b With the help of the source given below, explain the importance of an infrastructure for trade

and economic growth. [ /5]

Infrastructure has a direct relation with economic growth. It gives a technical support to our

economy. Infrastructure ensures the smooth flow of services and goods. Because of infrastructure we

can travel, trade and use transport and a country can prosper.
