What happened?

• The two armies met July 1, 1863• Union cavalry surprised Confederate

infantry• Outnumbered, the Union retreated• July 2, 1863: The Confederates

launched another assault, yet Union was able to save their position

• July 3, 1863: Union was led by General Pickett. Confederates march on open ground, which made it easy for Union soldiers to attack.

Why did it occur?• General Lee began to move north in

June with an army of 75,000.• Lee figured another victory on

Northern soil would convince Britain and France to aid Confederacy.

• Lincoln appointed General Meade to find and fight Lee’s forces and protect Washington and Baltimore from Confederate attack.

Outcome of the battle?

• Confederates were defeated and retreated back to Virginia.

• On November 19, 1863, Abraham Lincoln held a ceremony dedicating a cemetery at Gettysburg. He expressed through a speech what the war had come to mean.
