A Note from your Interim Rector… by Fr. Bill Hyde

On the Third Sunday of Easter our Gospel lesson described one of Jesus’ post-

resurrection appearances. Suddenly appearing in the midst of His disciples, the

Risen Lord said simply, “Shalom!” Today the Hebrew word Shalom is usually

understood to mean “peace be with you.” However, in the days of Jesus it con-

veyed a considerably more involved greeting or even question. In those days it

was understood to mean all is well with the world, all is just, all is fair, all is the

way God means it to be. Or when posed as a question, what are you doing to

make this world more like God’s world? Remember, Jesus had just died and

now was risen. The disciples were understandably confused and frightened.

Jesus’ intention must have been to remind them of why He had been among in

the first place. That is to remake this world in a way that reflects God’s inten-

tion and love for all people.

To do that, His disciples were to spread His message and ministry throughout

all people and nations. That mission is now ours. We are Jesus’ modern day

disciples. His flag – our faith – is now in our hands.

All of this came back to me as I was thinking about our celebration of Buddy

Temple’s life. One of his favorite sayings was, “Don’t walk around the down

and out.” The implication being that we are called by God to give special atten-

tion to those in need. It is one manifestation of loving our neighbor. St Cypri-

an’s has a long history of such work and you are to be commended for all that

you have done over the years. At the same time, there is much, much more to

be done. Unfortunately, need is a deep, deep well. There are those within and

outside this faith community who are in all kinds of human need – physical,

emotional, financial, spiritual.

Some of us simply need someone to care. This community has been truly

blessed by God in what we have, who we are and what we are willing to do.

For that I say, “Thanks be to God!” And to all of you I say, “Thanks be to you!”

You are good and faithful servants. May God continue to bless our efforts and

may we continue to strive to make this world a reflection of God’s world.

Rector Search Committee by Jake Squiers, Chair

The Search Committee has been very busy this month traveling to visit with prospective Rectors. We can report

that we are impressed with the candidates provided by the Diocese. The Committee is meeting this week to care-

fully review search team visits and determine the next most appropriate steps. Thanks to all the Committee mem-

bers for their hard work and to the parish members for continued thoughts and prayers.

St. Cyprian’s School News

Mark 9:36-37 NIV – He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in

his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name wel-

comes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”

Fr Caskey’s legacy has grown over the last 60 years and with God’s help will continue to

do so into the future. The support exhibited at the school’s largest fundraiser, Bayou

Bash, on April 10 was certainly a testament to the dedication of church, school, and

community to the belief that good things for children take place at our school. The evening was filled with great

food, beautiful decorations, lively music, fun and fellowship. Individuals left with the knowledge their attendance

and monetary donations will allow continued improvements for the school as we equip students to become twenty

-first century learners. We are grateful for the church members that supported this amazing event which netted

approximately $60,000 for our school.

From the Vestry Galatians 5:22-23

But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way

that fruit appears in an orchard-things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity.

Sometimes waiting can be difficult, all the way from waiting for the sweet arms of Jesus to take our loved ones, to

waiting for projects to be complete, to waiting for a new priest. In the life of our church, what should we be doing

while we wait? As part of that answer, the Diocese of Texas has suggested Sharing Faith Dinners on Thursday, May

14th. Some of you may be asked to host a dinner in your home for a small group. Some of you may be asked to be

a Moderator or facilitate the group sharing at the dinner that evening. And all of you will be asked to participate by

sharing a meal, perhaps making some new friends, and more importantly sharing what your faith means to you.

Please contact Diana Hineman (414.2732) for any questions or to volunteer your time.

The renovation of the Women’s Restroom and the adjoining E.C.W. room is a project that we are also watching to

completion. At this point the church has paid $14,180. The E.C.W. has contributed $3,350 for window treatments in

the E.C.W. room and along with private donors will contribute more for furnishings planned for the future. Hope-

fully, this project will be complete in May, along with the final total of our expenditure.

The Search Committee continues to interview prospective new priests for St. Cyprian’s and asks for your prayers for

guidance as they seek the priest God has chosen for us. Waiting for the fruit to appear seems difficult at times, but

what we do while we wait is living God’s way.

Blessings, Jayne McCurry, Senior Warden

All youth volunteers and events can be coordinated through our Youth Minister, Jordan Dietz at 936.465.7723 or [email protected].

A letter from Jordan:

Graduation, a day we look forward to since the day we were born. I remember in

middle school, I use to dream about what goofy thing I would do when I walked

across the stage, because I had seen it in countless movies. However, when I got to

high school, that changed. It quickly went from “Do I moon dance off the stage?” to

“WHAT ON EARTH AM I GOING TO DO WHEN I GET OUT!”

Ralph Waldo Emerson said this, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared

to what lies within us.” The future can be a scary thought, especially when we get to thinking what we

will be doing five years from now. We sometimes tend to set high expectations for ourselves that have

the potential to make us doubt ourselves. “Am I really good enough?” The truth is, Yes, you are good

enough! As the Great Bambino said, “Don’t let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.”

Don’t let struggles of your mind overrule the desires of your heart. Stay focused and stay driven. You

can accomplish anything through Christ who strengthens you.

I leave you with a quote from Steve Jobs who said “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone

else’s life. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important,

have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.”
