President’s Message Linda Quinby

The recent divisive political season and election results have left many around the country feeling discouraged and even fearful. I’ve been asked what it means, and what we can do. Here are some of the thoughts I shared at our November meeting.

First, I am grateful and comforted to work and to share friendship with all of you!

Why? Because equity is still an issue, because we lift each other up, because our voices and actions are needed now as much as ever, and because together our voices are stronger and our actions more effective.

On that note, thank you to our Get-Out-the-Vote Team led by Arleen von Schlieder, Marcy Llamas Senese, and Donna Lilly, who spoke to over 500 people at MiraCosta San Elijo campus, registering voters and encouraging young people to vote.

And thanks to our members who worked with with the League of Women Voters to educate voters and get out the vote!

Branch calendar now on website! For the latest updates and information, go to our branch website at http://delmarleucadia-ca.aauw.net/ and click on Calendar under Activities at top, or on Branch Calendar under Get Involved in right-hand sidebar. Check the calendar when scheduling events to avoid conflicts. Provide updates to Linda Quinby, Betty Reed, or Andrea Henne.

Seacrest Project: Our highly successful Timely Topics discussion series at Seacrest Village retirement community is taking on hiatus for a couple months, for the holidays and to regroup. If you are interested in participating – by presenting a topic, coordinating presentations, or preparing flyers for the residents – please contact Linda Quinby.

Out-to-Lunch Bunch: Locations for the next three OTL Bunch outings are Dec. 8, Le Papagayo, Encinitas; Jan. 12, The Craftsman Tavern, Encinitas; and Feb. 9, Dini’s Bistro, Carlsbad. Join us for one or more of these fun, casual, no-host lunches at local restaurants. All members and friends are welcome. RSVP to Karen Vanderwerken one day ahead so we know how big a table to get.

IBC Luncheon: The annual luncheon of the San Diego InterBranch Council will take place on Saturday, January 28th, from 11:30 to 2:00. This luncheon is open to members of all San Diego County Branches. The speaker will be Anne Hoiberg, Activist and Change Maker, speaking on “AAUW Women and the Women’s Suffrage Movement.” The flyer and reservation form is available on our website: http://delmarleucadia-ca.aauw.net/. Click link at top of home page.

AAUW BRIDGE GROUPS ARE RE-FORMING! A number of you have expressed an interest in reviving our bridge groups. Well, let’s do it! If you are interested, please contact Jackie Stone at [email protected] before January 1st.

TECH TREK VOLUNTEERS ARE WANTED! Ten volunteers are needed for interviews with Tech Trek STEM camp applicants. Typically, the interviews are held in March at one of five middle schools in our district. If you are new, you will be paired with someone who has been through the interview experience before. It’s a fun and rewarding experience!. Contact Betty Reed ([email protected]) for details.

IN ADDITION… Nominating Committee: Yes, we’re coming up on that time again. We need three volunteers to put together a slate of officers for 2017-2018. Some of the current Board members are likely to continue and they can help with suggestions, so it’s not as daunting as it may seem. We need to vote on the nominating committee members by February, and will vote on the slate of officers in April. Contact Linda Quinby to serve your branch through this important and time-limited task that you can do from home.

Name Badges: Tired of fussing with sticky labels at AAUW events? Customized, durable plastic name badges with the AAUW logo are available through ShopAAUW on the national website. Only $8 for pin clasp, $10 for magnetic clasp. Shipping is free! Customize with your name and Del Mar-Leucadia Branch. Go to: http://aauw.source4.com/b2c/ProductInfo.asp?Category=1576&Itm=131042

Membership Matters Jackie Stone, Membership

Congratulations! YOU ARE ON THE MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE! You…yes, YOU, the branch member, are a vital part of our efforts to grow our membership and help our branch thrive!Here’s how you can be a PRIZE-WINNING member and have fun as you do your part to help AAUW DML grow:

Beginning in January, start submitting your leads for prospective new members to membership chair, Jackie Stone. Just give her the contact information and she will do the follow-up.

For each lead you submit to her (regardless of whether it results in a new member), you will receive a ticket to be entered in our contest. At the installation and recognition meeting in June, two winners will be recognized and awarded with prizes: the member who provided the most leads and the member whose ticket is randomly chosen from all those who provided leads!

So JOIN IN THE SPIRIT of this push to make our branch GROW!

AND an added bonus: All new members who join between January 1 and June 1, 2017, will be paid up through June 2018! So, the sooner they join, the longer they have to enjoy the rewards of AAUW membership.

Start now: Who do you know who might be a prospective member? Neighbors, friends, colleagues, new acquaintances? Pass it along and be our champion!

President’s Message (Continued from pg. 1)

Some hopeful signs for the future:

• Nationally, voters aged 18 to 29 voted overwhelmingly for a message of equity and inclusiveness;

• There will be 21 women in the Senate, the most ever, plus a record number of women of color;

• Many states enacted legislation on AAUW-supported issues, including: raising the minimum wage (ME, CO, WA, AZ), instituting paid sick leave (WA & AZ), defeating a school voucher system (which often divert funds from already under-funded public school systems) (MO), automatically registering voters (AK), and supporting community college funding and improving health coverage (CA);

• And, the bond issue for our own MiraCosta College passed!

So now, we go back to work…

…encouraging and empowering women and girls, giving them the skills and tools to make a difference. Working together locally, regionally, and nationally, through our programs and outreach that support education and equity, including:

• Local college scholarships and Tech Trek, supported by your donations;

• National programs like

o NCCWSL, that trains young leaders and encourages them to run for office,

o $tart $mart and Work $mart, that teach students and working women to negotiate their pay so they don’t start behind and stay behind, aiming to achieve pay equity “one workshop at a time;” and

o our State and National public policy advocates who lobby for legislation to ensure equity and education for all women and girls.

You can feel proud that all of these programs are supported by our dues, as well as donations to our national endowment, the AAUW Fund.

I encourage you to find your voice and your passion.

Get involved in political action, make a donation - become empowered! Share the AAUW message with a friend or stranger. Action makes a difference – for ourselves and for all women and girls.

Linda
