Mixer/Thermostatic Mixer

A mixer shower takes water from both the hot and cold water supplies

and mixes them to achieve the preferred temperature. Thermostatic

mixers include a thermostatic device which will accurately maintain the

temperature. Some mixer showers will require high water pressures in

order to work effectively. These are High Pressure systems. Look out for

the HP symbol on selected showers within this brochure.

Power Shower

Works in the same way as a mixer shower, but includes an integral pump to

boost the fl ow of water for an exhilarating shower experience. Power showers

are ideal if you have low water pressure but should not be used with a high

pressure unvented system.

Electric Shower

These are a great choice for larger households where there is high

demand for hot water. Electric showers only require a cold water mains

feed. This is because water is heated up as it passes through an integral

heater within the shower unit, rather than coming from the hot water

cylinder, so there’s always enough hot water to go round.

Choose the right shower for your home

There are three basic categories of shower - mixer, power and electric. Which type you choose will depend on how your hot water system works. Follow our guide below to make sure you pick the right shower for your home, or have a chat with your plumber.

Gravity-fed (Vented system)

This type of system will be found in most homes in the UK. If you have a gravity system, you’ll have a cold water tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder directly below it (usually in the airing cupboard). The water in the cylinder is heated by a boiler and fed to taps and showers, with the boiler also feeding radiators around the house. As the water in the cylinder is used up, it is replaced with cold from the tank above, which in turn is ‘topped up’ from the mains water supply via the ball valve. To work properly, the pressure from both water sources will need to be balanced. Your plumber will be able to tell you if your system is balanced and if it isn’t, will be able to fi t either a pump or a pressure reducing valve (if mains cold water fed).

Unvented System

An unvented system has a hot water storage cylinder that takes cold water directly from the mains. The water is heated by an in-built coil which is either operated electrically, or with hot water from the central heating boiler. As the coil gets hot, it heats the cold water within the cylinder ready for use. As everything is under the pressure of mains water, the fl ow rates are much better and you won’t need a pump to get a powerful shower. The whole heating system is completely sealed (i.e. “unvented”) and they can be installed virtually anywhere, so you might fi nd yours in a storage cupboard. A lot of large new homes will have one of these systems, where there is a high demand for hot water.

Combination (Combi) Boiler

A combi boiler can be located anywhere within the home and heats water ‘on demand’ using a heat exchanger when a hot tap is turned on. A combi boiler is fed directly from the mains, so it doesn’t need a hot water cylinder or a cold water tank. It also heats water for central heating. Combi boilers are usually fi tted in relatively small houses or fl ats, where there isn’t a great demand for hot water.

How to identify your water systemMost homes in the UK will have a ‘traditional’ hot water system, made up of three elements; a boiler to heat the water, a hot water cylinder to store the heated water and a cold water storage tank for taps and showers, and radiators to heat the property using water from the boiler. This will be the case for many of us, but advances in technology also mean that there are now systems that do not need to store hot or cold water to deliver it on demand, which is great news for small properties which are short on storage space.Use our guide below to identify your water system and fi nd the best shower for you:

Electric ShowersBe happy with our new range of electric showers – Smile, Glee, Joy and Bliss.

Not only do these showers look great, but unlike some electric showers, each model in the Bristan range benefi ts from fi ve water and electrical cable entry points so there is plenty of fl exibility to fi t your existing pipe work. The footprint of the unit has also been designed to cover most fi xings left by your old shower and the brackets on the riser rail can also be adjusted to cover over any old holes, keeping installation time and costs to a minimum.

All are designed to be easy to clean while separate temperature and fl ow controls make them really easy to use. Most have smart digital temperature displays and, if you’re a gadget-lover, you’ll love the touch control feature on the Bliss shower.

Joy and Bliss also incorporate a ‘phased shutdown’ which clears all of the hot water out of the shower when you turn it off so that the next person who uses it doesn’t get a blast of hot water when they turn it back on. And it helps reduce build up of limescale – good news if you live in a hard water area. Some models even include a handy storage shelf for your shampoos and shower gels.

Choose your valve

The valve is the most important element because it controls your shower. The model you choose will also effect what add-ons you can have.

Dual Control Shower Valve

These valves include a thermostatic control for temperature and a stopcock which turns the water on or off. This type of valve can be mixed and matched with a shower kit or fi xed shower head only.

Shower Valve with Two Stopcocks

This type of valve has three dials. One dial controls the temperature, while the other two are stopcocks which allow you to divert water to two different outlets. So, for example, you could have a standard fi xed head controlled by one stopcock and a bath fi ll controlled by the other.

Shower Valve with Two Outlet Diverter and Stopcock

This model includes a temperature control and a stopcock which you can use to control fl ow to your shower. The third dial allows you to divert water to an additional two outlets so you could control a showerhead, bath fi ll and body jets, all from the same valve.

Shower Valve with Three Outlet Diverter and Stopcock

This valve works in the same way as the one to the left however this time, the integral diverter allows you to divert water to an additional three outlets. Just think of the possibilities!

Adjustable RiserAn attachment to the shower pole which allows the shower head to be adjusted up and down to allow for different heights.
