In The SchoolsSponsored by the Suburban Chambers of Commerce Foundation

The Summit Educational Foundation -- recently funded a grant at Lincoln Hubbard Elementary School for materials to promote repeated reading experiences in order to build fluent readers. These materials are in the form of big books, readers’ theater scripts, and read-alongs which produce highly engaging reading experiences. The selected materials will be used for repeated readings in both whole group and small group settings in the second grade classrooms.

Students love the big books. Some of the book titles are: From Caterpillar to Butterfly, The Color of Us, The Rainbow Fish, Silly Sally, If the Dinosaurs Came Back, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and In the Small, Small Pond. Students choose to read the big books with one another during Friday Fun Time and play school. Together they simulate some of the activities we do while reading the big books during shared reading. Ms. Abigail Emerson adds that “Watching students “play” these reading games during Friday Fun Time speaks to how much they enjoy the shared reading activities. Not only do they enjoy shared reading with the big books, but they are also becoming stronger, more fluent readers.”

“Chrysanthemum, written by Kevin Henkes is a story I always read to my second graders at the beginning of the year because it emphasizes the importance of kindness and acceptance,” explains Emerson. “This year, I shared the story with my students using the big book format, which created a completely different experience. Not only did my students enjoy the huge illustrations, but they also loved the larger print, because it was easier for them to chime in as we reread the story. Throughout the year, I have used the big book version of Chrysanthemum to teach my readers how to decode multisyllabic words, scoop words to read fluently, and use context clues to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words. “I like the big books, because it kind of helps us read smoothly,” agrees second grader, Indiya Weinmann.

The listening center is a place in Emerson’s classroom where four students are invited at a time to listen and follow along to books on CD. Some titles in the Readers’ Theater Script Box for grades 1-2 are: The Country Mouse and the

City Mouse, The Fox and the Stork, The Hall of Holidays and The Drum. Mackenzie Matter, a student of Emerson’s, elaborates by saying, “The listening center helps me as a reader because they read really well on the CDs so it helps me to learn better voices.”

Kent Place School recently welcomed Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Colonel Jack Jacobs. Col. Jacobs received America’s highest award for valor in action, saving the lives of one U.S. adviser and 13 allied soldiers during his first tour in Vietnam was interviewed on the stage at the school’s Hyde and Watson Theatre.

Over the course of more than 20 years of service, Col. Jacobs also earned three Bronze Stars and two Silver Stars. Col. Jacobs currently serves as an analyst for NBC and MSNBC.

The evening began with short videos, describing the significance of the Medal of Honor and the sacrifices men and women

make to protect our country. Servicemen and women in attendance were also invited to stand, and the audience applauded them for their service. Then, Col. Jacobs was introduced and invited on stage to be interviewed by Robert F. Jerome, a retired representative from the Medal of Honor Foundation and Medal of Honor Society.

“We were thrilled to have such an esteemed leader join us for an evening at KPS,” stated Head of School Sue Bosland. “His shared insights into the meaning of valor and bravery inspired us all.”

This event was made possible by Kent Place parent Christopher Cook, managing director, Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Every day you can read in various media about the problems of income inequality. The Student / Partner Alliance, based in Summit is making a difference in this area. To date S/PA has helped over 1750 low-income Newark area teens receive a college preparatory high school education through a combination of scholarships and mentoring.

Since 1993 they have been asking area adults to help mentor nearby students. With mentors to encourage students towards success in their academic goals, teens dramatically increase their chance of graduating from high school and attending college. Student / Partner Alliance can match you with a motivated student, and then provide mentor training and fun events to bring you and your student together on a regular basis.

The S/PA Board Member and mentors are residents of Summit and surrounding towns. For more information about the S/PA program, contact Marianne Busby, Director of Marketing at 908-522-0405.

The Junior League of Summit (JLS) is pleased to announce that plans are underway for the renovation of their thriving Thrift Shop, located at 37 DeForest Avenue in Summit. The Thrift Shop was established in 1934 and offers new and gently used clothing and shoes for men, women and children, toys, decorative items for the home, house wares and furniture that is deeply discounted. May 30th will see thousands of small yellow rubber ducks floating down the Passaic River in Berkeley Heights when the twelfth annual Rubber Ducky Festival is held.

Sponsored by the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club, the festival is a family-oriented afternoon of fun, food, and music featuring a selection of local bands, a Car Show, the Rubber Ducky Race, games, water balloons, a Moonwalk and Dunk Tank, and more!

Here’s how it works: Each duck is “adopted” for $5, and then all are launched in the Passaic River where they “race” to the finish line at Passaic River Park off Springfield Avenue. The “parents” of the duck that crosses the finish line first receive prizes donated by local businesses. This year’s first place prize is a $250.00 Berkeley Heights gift certificate.

The funds raised go to support various

organizations, including the YMCA in Berkeley Heights and the Berkeley Heights Summer Concert Series, as well as scholarships for high school seniors.

The Festival opens at noon on May 31 (rain or shine) and the games and fun last until 4 PM. There is no entrance fee. Food by Pete’s Place at Yogoccino will keep stomachs happy. Live music will keep everyone entertained throughout the afternoon. The Car Show will run until 3 PM when the trophies are awarded, and the actual Rubber Ducky Race will go from 3 until 4, with the winners’ prizes announced at approximately 4 PM.

Rubber ducks can be “adopted” at the Festival.

For more information, call 908-565-1132 or visit www.bhrubberducky.org.

See you at the Festival!
