Welcome Message from the DOVEBOOK E-newsletter Staff

THE SWITCH FROM MONTHLY TO BI-MONTHLY…AND FINALLY QUARTERLY

We‟ve had lots of changes in The Columbidae‟s Cooer since last issue. Many of those changes you will

be able to see in this issue. But the one change I want to immediately point out is the frequency in which

issues are going to be released. Because of a number of circumstances, we‟ve had to switch from a

monthly to a bi-monthly publication this issue…

http://dovebook.webs.com/apps/calendar/showEvent?calID=5647880&eventID=136668319

If you are a site Member, you‟ve already received an e-mail about the above as it was sent out on what

would have been the due date for member submissions this issue -- Tuesday, August 9, 2011 -- with

subject line “IMPORTANT UPDATE: Submissions Deadline and Release Dates for „The Columbidae‟s

Cooer‟ E-newsletter have changed!” (if you did not receive the e-mail, don‟t worry!). And if you‟ve

already seen what‟s coming up in the next issue, note that we will switch yet again from a bi-monthly to a

quarterly publication at that time.

Of course, we are not going anywhere! The Columbidae‟s Cooer will still bring you all of Dovebook‟s

happenings so that you can maintain care of your pet doves and pet pigeons, learn about the rest of the

world‟s doves and pigeons, and help you connect with each other and with us in our love for these

wonderful birds.

Sincerely,

Evelyn-mun

In an effort to provide a centralized location on the world wide web for law and legislation related to dove

and pigeon birds from around the world, I‟ve set up a category in the blog page of our website that will

house these resources at the link above. We at DOVEBOOK are conducting long-term research and this

centralized location that we‟ve termed “Library Project” is the on-going and continuing process of that

research. We invite our DOVEBOOK website Members to contribute to our efforts at:

How did the idea for a Columbidae birds law resources library come about? From a desire to know what

is legal and what is not in terms of the purchase, selling, trading, adoption, requests for, and general

acquisition of doves and pigeons.

We all know that depending on the part of the world one is from, and most importantly the part of the

world the bird is from and where it is going to be bought, sold, traded, adopted, or acquired, the law is

different and therefore can either classify that bird as legal or illegal to keep.

This Library Project is an opportunity to clear up these questions and provide the dove and pigeon

enthusiast with information on their favored species or breed of bird. Mind everyone, not every law

resource relating to Columbidae will be included in this Library Project as they are primarily web-based;

but we do plan to include a list within this Library Project of non-web or print resources.

This Library Project also aims to house all other dove- and pigeon-related law and legislation from around

the world; whether it is in web-based form, or print-based form and listed in our non-web/in-print

resources.

DOVES AND PIGEONS IN THE GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS

by Sal Niner, Site Owner

Methuselah, the white male collared dove (pictured above right), holds the Guinness World Record for

Oldest Living Caged Dove at nineteen years and six months when he was last examined in October 2004.

Old Man, the former racing pigeon, holds the Guinness World Record for Oldest Living Pigeon, and

assuming he is still alive would be thirty-one years and seven months on the current day; it does not

explicitly state when he was last examined to determine whether or not he‟s still alive.

MAKE YOUR DOVE & PIGEON RECOMMENDATIONS COUNT AT RIGHT PET!

by Sal Niner, Site Owner

We dove and pigeon enthusiasts know how much we love our birds. Make that love count and cast in

your recommendations at Right Pet today for your favorite species and/or breed.

http://www.rightpet.com/

Recently, I had the pleasure of making my recommendation and review of sorts on keeping a ringneck

dove. In this review (a work in progress) made at the Right Pet website, I evaluated Paz, our

DOVEBOOK Mascot and my constant companion:

http://www.rightpet.com/ratingofbird/ringneck-dove/620

The above recommendation and review of Paz is part of a group of reviews that users make to evaluate

their ringneck doves as pets, which you can view at:

http://www.rightpet.com/BirdSpeciesDetail/ringneck-dove

Page 7: THE COLUMBIDAE’S COOER - Webs · The Columbidae‟s Cooer will still bring you all of Dovebook‟s happenings so that you can maintain care of your pet doves and pet pigeons, learn

DOVEBOOK, The Dove and Pigeon Social Network | THE COLUMBIDAE’S COOER, August-September 2011

7

And just like one can evaluate this species, one can also evaluate other dove and pigeon species and

breeds; each type has their own page and has the option to include a species tag widget on your website

like the one pictured above, so that visitors to your site can click on the widget which in turn will take

them to that species pet reviews page.

If you do a search on the Right Pet website for all dove and pigeon birds, you‟ll find many different types.

For your convenience, I‟ve created a blog entry on DOVEBOOK which compiles in one place all the

different dove and pigeon bird types available to recommend and review at Right Pet:

Site Members, feel free to leave your comments under the above DOVEBOOK blog entry about your

experience providing reviews at Right Pet, and let us know if you‟ve submitted a recommendation for

your favorite dove and/or pigeon bird.

If you are registered on Right Pet and wish to become part of our “pack” or want to invite us to join

yours, you can find our profile at:

DOVEBOOK HAS EXTENDED ITS PRESENCE TO PETBOOK

by Sal Niner, Site Owner

In the June issue, I brought you a list of all the external websites that DOVEBOOK has a presence in,

with the article “DOVEBOOK Spreads its Wings on the World Wide Web”. I‟m adding one more to that

list because we now have our group called Doves and Pigeons on the following social networking

website:

THE WHITE PIGEON LOFT AT THE SAN DIEGO ZOO

by Sal Niner, Site Owner

Recently, I got a chance to visit the White Pigeon Loft exhibit at the world-famous San Diego Zoo in the

United States. This is where the birds are housed:

Page 9: THE COLUMBIDAE’S COOER - Webs · The Columbidae‟s Cooer will still bring you all of Dovebook‟s happenings so that you can maintain care of your pet doves and pet pigeons, learn

Notice the White Racing Homer in the window on the right:

The loft has two separate sections with white racing/homing pigeons on either side, and windows on all

sides with cage barring to let in both a good amount of sunlight and ventilation.

The American Racing Pigeon Union (AU) has their flyers and other printed information distributed at this

exhibit; while there, I was able to pick up their Fact Sheet and an informational brochure of the National

Pigeon Association. The AU also did an article of the facility in which this exhibit is located, that you can

read on their website at:

http://www.pigeon.org/famouszoo.htm

ZOONOOZ, the in-print magazine of the San Diego Zoo & Safari Park, recently released an article on

these pigeons that features in their September 2011 issue titled “Don‟t Pigeonhole Me: The Secret Life of

Racers”.

Other dove and pigeon species, many of them exotic, are kept at the San Diego Zoo throughout their

various aviaries and other exhibits. Take a look at some of them in our Doves and Pigeons in Zoos album

on DOVEBOOK‟s Photo Gallery at:

http://dovebook.webs.com/apps/photos/album?albumid=11442041

Our intent, of course, is to add more pictures to this album once they become available in future visits, not

only to this zoo but to others as well.

GAYLE A. SOUCEK‟S BOOK DOVES: A COMPLETE PET OWNER‟S MANUAL

by Sal Niner, Site Owner

Last issue, I reviewed a pet bird species-specific book titled Ringneck Doves: A Handbook of Care &

Breeding. This time my review, the second for The Columbidae‟s Cooer of another resource from my

personal collection on Columbidae, is about Doves: A Complete Pet Owner‟s Manual. This 96-page

softcover published in 2006 is more generalist in nature, but still focuses on the Ringneck and Diamond

Doves; and is meant to introduce basic pet care of the two most-commonly kept domesticated species of

seed-eating doves.

The “Introduction to Doves” chapter goes briefly into how doves are known in popular culture and

emphasizes the pet enjoyment quality of ringnecks and diamonds. We are given brief facts on their

anatomy in general, and where doves and pigeons are found geographically. The author also states the

fact that the more-common seed-eating species are suitable as pets, while the less-common fruit-eating

species are not because of their specific dietary needs.

The “Choosing your Pet Dove” chapter goes over what we should expect before even acquiring a bird and

gives a checklist of considerations to keep in mind when bringing that bird into one‟s life, as well as the

sorts of life changes one might need to do for their new pet. Additionally, Soucek describes the types of

places one can go to obtain their pet dove, such as pet shops, breeders, and bird fairs; and provides a

guide on how to pick out a healthy dove. Like the resource I reviewed last time, this book does not

Page 19: THE COLUMBIDAE’S COOER - Webs · The Columbidae‟s Cooer will still bring you all of Dovebook‟s happenings so that you can maintain care of your pet doves and pet pigeons, learn

19

acknowledge shelters or rescue organizations as a place to obtain a pet dove; and like my last review, I

recommend the inclusion of such information in a future edition of this book with input from consultants

as needed.

The “Understanding your Dove” chapter looks at usual dove behavior and the factors which drive that

behavior. It also provides guidance on how to bond with your pet dove when knowing how to interpret

its behavior.

The “Housing your Pet Dove” chapter goes over indoor cages and outdoor aviaries as the two types of

dove habitats in captivity, but mostly focuses on indoor cages. Being the owner of an indoor caged

ringneck, I found the guidance and tips in this chapter relevant to the living arrangements of both my pet

Paz and myself. This chapter gives very basic information on, and is only meant to introduce the reader

to, outdoor aviaries. If you are seriously considering going through with setting up and maintaining an

outdoor aviary habitat for your doves instead of, or in addition to, an indoor cage habitat, then I suggest

referring to additional books or other resources that focus solely on the subject of dove/pigeon outdoor

aviaries. When maintaining the pet dove‟s habitat at home, the author Gayle A. Soucek makes a

distinction between cleaning and disinfecting, giving scenarios as guidelines on when one or the other

should be done.

The “Healthy Nutrition” chapter discusses what should be fed to your pet dove. One thing that I found

helpful in this chapter is the Dove Food Pyramid, designed to visually understand how much of each food

type to give my pet bird. The author then goes over in more detail each food type making up the pyramid.

The “Keeping your Dove Healthy” chapter, in my opinion, is the best chapter of this book. We

understand that we must maintain the health of our doves through good housing and nutrition practices,

and many of us do. But this chapter goes over what to do if your pet becomes ill or injured even with

such good practices in place (because, let‟s face it, it does happen despite our best efforts otherwise).

Here we understand not only the different types of diseases that doves can get, but also become aware of

the dangers in the household and how to avoid those from turning into accidents for the pet dove. This

chapter even includes a how-to guide on administering first aid to your pet dove in the case of an

emergency.

The “Breeding Doves” chapter goes over this process with guidance and tips from when the parents start

their mating rituals and how they behave during those, to when the young are born and how to care for

them up to the point of getting them banded.

The “Other Dove Species” chapter lists and briefly describes those besides the ringneck and diamond

doves. These species are classified as either “common” (readily available to obtain for keeping in

aviculture) or “uncommon” (difficult to obtain for keeping in aviculture). It goes over these species

briefly because the author‟s main focus is on ringneck doves and diamond doves as pets; therefore, we are

being introduced to other dove and pigeon species only to give us an idea that they exist and are available.

Of course, if the reader so wishes to learn more about a particular species, it is their responsibility to

research further through other resources, determine how easy or difficult the desired Columbidae species

can be obtained for keeping in aviculture, and furthermore how suited or unsuited it would be as a house

pet.

The “Color Mutations and Genetics” chapter looks at this subject in both ringneck doves and diamond

doves; and how it is both naturally and artificially altered to produce favored colors and other physical

traits that fanciers look for in these two species of birds.

The book ends with an “Information” chapter: a list of other resources, besides this book, in taking care of

pet doves; and organizes them by periodicals, organizations, helpful web sites, manufacturers, and

suppliers. In addition, this book is richly complimented with both photographs and art illustrations

throughout, including those of the front and back inside cover endpapers.

One thing that I did not agree with in Doves: A Complete Pet Owner‟s Manual is Soucek‟s claim that

Ringnecks are relatively easy to find at pet shops because of their popularity. They might be the most

popular pet dove species, but when compared to other pet birds and even other companion animals they

are definitely not popular or well-known. In fact, when I‟ve gone into pet shops most of the time there

have not been any ringneck doves available nor will the shopkeepers be familiar with this species, much

less doves as pets.

I highly praise this book just the same because in it Soucek shares, in an easy-to-follow manner, valuable

reflections of her many years of experience with keeping birds. Overall, I give this book five out of a

possible five stars for the extensive introductory content about basic pet care for the two most common

species of doves, and should form part of every dove keeper‟s library.

DOVEBOOK ON FACEBOOK

by Evelyn-mun, Site Administrator

Last issue, I reported what our website achieved on Twitter with the article “We‟ve Reached our 100th

Tweet Milestone!” Well, the Dovebook website managed another milestone, this time around on our

Facebook page.

On Saturday, July 30, 2011 we reached 10 people liking our page!

We want to thank all of our Fans who have liked us on Facebook. We could not have reached this

milestone without your support. You represent our dove and pigeon birds; whether you fancy them, breed

them, own them, make them members of your family, or consider them your friends…

Dovebook has a special Website Membership offer for our Facebook Fans:

http://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=245365295485173&id=194767703900467

If you register or subscribe to our site through the above method, you will not be required to state a

reason as to why you are joining Dovebook, nor will you have to wait for your membership to be

approved as it is approved automatically; but you still are required to fill out and post your profile

on our Members page in order to keep your membership active with us. It’s important that when

giving out your full name, you state it exactly as you have it listed on Facebook because we go by

our page’s fan list of names in order to verify your claim that you are our Facebook fan. Thank

Did you know that as our Fan you can post your feedback (questions, comments, suggestions, etc.) to us

about this e-newsletter on Facebook? There are two ways:

For leaving feedback on a particular back issue, go to our “The Columbidae‟s Cooer” DOVEBOOK

Official E-newsletter Covers photo album at

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.208684455842125.52355.194767703900467

There, you will see multiple picture thumbnails, one for each of the newsletter‟s back issues. Click on the

picture thumbnail of the issue you‟d like to leave feedback on; it will then open the full version of that

picture. Below that picture write a comment, then click ENTER to post it. It‟s that simple! :)

For leaving feedback on a future issue, go to our Facebook page‟s wall, by clicking on the “Wall” tab to

the left of your screen. At the top of that Wall page, but below the string of thumbnail pictures, you will

see the “Share” bar with a box open by default to “Status”; write something in that box and then click

ENTER to post your feedback on our page.
