Every day, The Community Foundation helps our most generous people identify and support the issues and causes that matter to them most.

Our architectural heritage, the arts, the environment, cancer research, education, churches… In the past 12 months, a record 10 new charitable funds were created at The Community Foundation. Their impact can be felt now and for generations to come.

The Craig “Cujo, Jr.” Bennett Scholarship Fund

Knowing that his numerous physical issues would shorten his life expectancy, Craig Bennet asked his parents to establish a scholarship in his memory.

“Craig was always fighting for the underdog. Funny thing is, he never saw himself in the same way everyone else did. Everybody saw Craig’s disabilities as limiting. Craig saw himself almost as a superhero. If someone was bullying a child or a person with special needs, he would rush up to protect. He always looked out for others and encouraged them to believe in themselves,” said ReBecca Bennett, his mother.

Upon his death, Craig’s family established this scholarship to benefit Stafford High School seniors who, like Craig, have “pulled themselves up by their bootstraps,” using determination and the force of will, to overcome odds, meet hardship and succeed in achieving their dreams.

The Ron and Ann Holmes Charitable Fund

Ann and Ron Holmes are using a named fund at The Community Foundation to give efficiently to several organizations that they actively support as volunteers. They will

continue to support higher education, particularly community college initiatives, that align with Ron’s involvement on the Board of Trustees of the Virginia Community College System, as well as their church, their alma maters and the United Way.

“What we like about having a fund is that now we can write one check and have the Community Foundation grant out the funds as giving opportunities arise,” Ron said.

The Falcon Fund

The Falcon Fund began with a $10,000 gift from the Community Enrichment Fund of The Commu-nity Foundation. Fredericksburg Academy was chosen from a pool of area nonprofits that achieved a significant benchmark of donor engagement and won a grand prize during the 2015 Community Give 24-hour online day of giving event. This fund supports the Fredericksburg Academy mission:

To provide a rigorous, college-preparatory education in a nurturing environment that challenges each student to achieve academic excellence, to think critically and independently, to communicate effectively, and to act honorably.

The Alice Gray and Rick Johnson Memorial Fund

This memorial fund was created by Fitz Johnson and his wife Kelly, Past President of the foundation’s board, along with their children Fitzhugh and Mary Gray.

Our Community Scores a 10! New Charitable Funds Created

“Establishing a fund in my parents’ name was an easy decision because Kelly and I believe in the mission of The Community Foundation and it seemed like an appropriate way to honor them,” says Fitz Johnson of this named fund. “Everything I have and everything that I am is a direct result of my parents.”

Together, the Johnson family is building upon a formidable legacy of community involvement with annual gifts to their chosen nonprofit organizations.

The Kerry Keilty Memorial Endowment Fund

This fund is a natural extension of Kerry Keilty’s family’s effort to honor her memory and support brain cancer research. The fund will not only support the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University, it will also “keep her name alive forever,” accord-ing to Colby Keilty. Family and friends have held an annual March Madness Classic Golf Tournament in Kerry’s name since her death in 2004.

“Establishing the fund at The Community Foundation will ensure that our family can continue to support brain cancer research long after the last golf tournament is held,” said Colby.

Gifts like the Keilty’s are making a powerful difference. Read about the Duke Cancer Center’s breakthrough using the polio virus to treat glioblastoma at http://www.ibtimes.com/cancer-patients-cured-polio-virus-duke-university-trial-cbs-reports-1862796

The King Wack Family Fund

Cathy Wack and Steve King wanted to create a fund that could accommodate their wide array of philanthropic interests. Cathy has observed first-hand the founda-tion’s positive impact upon the community through her service on the board of gover-nors as Past President and as a founding member of the Women and Girls Fund.

“Steve and I strongly support The Community Foundation. We respect its ability to help people create charitable giving funds that become increasingly more effective in perpetuity. What an incredible concept!”

The O’Neill Fund for the Stewardship of Historic Resources

A community foundation is built on the premise that place is important. The O’Neill Fund for the Stewardship of Historic Resources champions and protects the places that tell our community’s story. It aims to enhance our sense of community by protecting the memories of people, places

and events that make up our local heritage. Grants from the fund can support work to stabilize and protect threatened artifacts, for example, or help rehabilitate significant buildings or landscapes.

“I became interested in supporting pres-ervation work when St. George’s began repairing and updating the protective cover-ings on the church’s stained glass windows” said Mary Jane. “Not everyone realizes we have Tiffany stained glass in Fredericksburg, and it must be looked after long-term if we want it to last into the future.”

The Jack O’Neill Fund for a Green Community

The Jack O’Neill Fund for a Green Communi-ty, described in the cover story on page one, was also established by Mary Jane O’Neill. Like the O’Neill Fund for the Stewardship of Historic Resources, this fund is dedicated to ensuring a vibrant community for future generations.

The Vittoria Family Fund

The Vittoria Family Fund was created by Midge Vittoria and her husband Sam, who recently passed away. Their fund supports organizations tackling homelessness, legal aid, mental health, indigent healthcare and autism.

“Sam was an immigrant who came here when he was 18. He particularly wanted to show his appreciation for the opportuni-ties that life in the United States provided him,” Midge said. “I became aware of all the things The Community Foundation does after I first joined the Women and Girls Fund. I like knowing that our gift will keep giving long after we are gone.”

The Kathryn and Benjamin Wafle Fund

“We chose The Community Foundation for this fund because we’ve both been involved with the organization and have tremendous confidence in its future,” says Ben Wafle of their named fund at the foundation. “We appreciate the leadership role that the foundation is playing in the continued development of the long-term quality of life in the Fredericksburg region.”

Kitty and Ben will be supporting their most loved causes, charities they traditionally support through annual gifts, and growing a permanent resource for these organizations in the future.

Additional Funds

Another new fund was recently established to support the performing arts, historic preservation and conservation.

The Community Foundation offers confidential giving options in addition to the named funds it manages.

The Community Foundation is a leading resource for scholarship funding in our community. Generous donors make these scholarships possible for many different reasons. These thoughtful donors have shown their commitment to creating a better future for the Rappahannock River region by financially assisting students who are pursuing a post-secondary education.
