Working with the community to build affordable internet access in Gellideg
• 71% ‐ access to the internet from home
• 21% ‐ fixed access through phones and TV deals
• 78% of people unwilling to access internet elsewhere
Affordability, financial literacy and financial inclusion
Our research
• Find a way to create community owned access to the WWW
• Limited experience in UK of community owned access
• MVH did not want to be a provider of digital services
• We looked to Spain and Guifi.net
Our solution
“To create an affordable, community owned and easily expandable digital network”
Our objective
Homage to Catalonia
“…to test whether it is possible to provide access to know‐how and tools to enable communities to
design, build, own and manage open, symmetrical, affordable, scalable and
sustainable broadband networks – not for private profit but for social benefit – in areas of
deprivation and market failure.”
Our challenge
