2017ANNUAL REPORT

As I write this note, Cancer Support Community Central Indiana is in year four of what I like to call the “next chapter” in our journey to ensure that no one faces cancer alone right here in our own backyard. I often tell folks that we are an organization that has the best of both worlds. That is, we are a local group focused on serving local women, men and children with a local board of directors and where local dollars stay right here in central Indiana. But, instead of using valuable human resources exploring best practices around research results, patient advocacy and general support needed by cancer patients and caregivers, we have the backing of an international organization that provides these much-needed resources to us so we can concentrate on what matters most---helping the people who walk through our doors.

This “extra” time has also allowed us to focus our time on meeting the patient where he or she is. In fact, Cancer Support Community Central Indiana now serves patients at Franciscan Health Indianapolis, Lafayette and Mooresville, Community Health Network East, North and South, Hendricks Regional Health, Eskenazi Health and our latest partner, Riley Hospital for Children. I am also proud of our partnership with American Cancer Society, IU Health, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Little Red Door Cancer Agency and Susan G. Komen for the Cure for our first-of-its-kind one-stop-shop cancer resource center at IU Simon Cancer Center.

Further, we have expanded outside of the traditional healthcare setting by teaming up with Eli Lilly to offer regular support services to their employees on-site and implemented a strategy to meet with numerous local business to educate them on the fact that we can be a no-cost benefit to their employees and

their families. Our expansion efforts don’t stop with healthcare providers and businesses though.

As part of a new three-year strategic plan (2017-19), Cancer Support Community Central Indiana will begin implementing an aggressive patient and caregiver advocacy program that will target civic, political and community leaders to make sure their (patients and caregivers) voices are heard and that policies are changed and fast-tracked to accommodate the estimated 30% increase in cancer diagnoses due to the aging baby boomer population over the next half to full decade.

I am also so very proud of the staff and board’s continued quest for improvement and innovation and look forward to implementing the first-of-its-kind mobile initiative, and serving more people in new ways than ever before over the next 12 months.

For those who have been receiving regular correspondence from us for any period, I am sure you have noticed a big change with this periodical. In fact, this is the first edition of our new The Companion publication. Don’t worry, you will continue to find our full calendar of events, programming and off-site activities as always. However, you can now also read about featured volunteers, participants, and the donors who allow us to offer what we do and much more. In fact, in this edition, we are taking the opportunity to report to all of our constituents on our 2016 financial performance and to thank our hundreds of individuals, corporations and foundation donors. Without these generous entities, we could not possibly do what we do.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for allowing us to serve you and for your unwavering contributions that help us ensure no one faces cancer alone.

With Gratitude,

Eric RichardsPresident & CEO

for a night of support that includes coming together for a meal, support groups led by Spanish-speaking therapists, programming for children and a new yoga class led in Spanish focusing on wellness and health.

Additionally, music therapists, art therapists, physical therapists and dozens of other medical professionals volunteered their time and expertise to present on topics like clinical trial participation, immunotherapy, aromatherapy, reflexology and getting back to work after a cancer diagnosis. Our new partnership with University of Indianapolis’ Occupational Therapy Department brought survivors a chance to ask individualized questions about lymphedema, managing chemo brain, sleep management and cancer related fatigue.

Fourth, with a rapidly changing cancer landscape and advancements in cancer care, survivors and their family members are seeking information more than ever before and our annual Survivor’s Summit

had a record number of participants. Attendees had a chance to hear presentations from 15 healthcare professionals and several full-scope follow-up workshops were held after at our facility to give attendees even more information and a chance to ask detailed questions.

Finally, as secondary cancers are currently on the rise in Central Indiana, survivors finished with their treatment are pursuing support groups, wellness classes and community around being as healthy as possible to minimize the possibility of secondary cancers. Cancer Grads support group, an intermediate yoga class, tai chi, nutrition classes, relaxation and visualization, and the Moving Beyond program all focused on post-treatment health and were expanded upon in 2016.

A huge thank you to all the donors, volunteers and community partners who worked together to make all of these supportive services available to survivors and their family members in 2016 so they did not have to face cancer alone.

“So no one faces cancer alone” was our driving force in 2016. Survivors and their family members came through our doors seeking support, education, wellness, connection with others and information about their cancer journey. With more Central Indiana residents being diagnosed with cancer than ever before, an expansion in services was more than necessary. Starting with Tippecanoe County, programming brought hope and support offerings to survivors in need. Women and men from all over the county travel to attend a local support group and remarked that attendance was highly beneficial.

Second, in an effort to support the local multi-cultural population and growing number of cancer survivors, Latino Family Night was expanded over the last 12 months. Survivors bring their whole family
