Chapter Leader’s Corner

Hello everyone, I am so sorry for the lateness of this newsletter! I have combined this with the March/April dates. My family has has some medical issues with our daughter, thankfully things are going much better. I hope this finds you all doing well. When I think of Spring I think of renewal, like a butterfly coming out of its cocoon. The days are beginning to get longer and hopefully it will begin to get warmer, let us focus on the bright new days ahead, the butterflies flying around and remember our children fluttering around us happy and carefree. Our children have died, but they are not gone from any of us. They will always be fluttering around. This month lets share about our children and how we honor them and keep their memories alive. Please bring what you would like to share with the group.

Our meeting will be April 15, 2014 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 5120 Harrison Road, Fredericksburg, VA in the Fellowship Hall beginning at 7:30 PM. I would like to thank Pastor Koehler and his congregation for having us at their church. Well, I hope that you all have a wonderful month. If you are in need of anything, please call me at 540-735-4276, if there is no answer, please be sure to leave your name and number so I can get back to you or e-mail me at [email protected]. WHO PACKED YOUR PARACHUTE?

Charles Plumb was a U.S. navy jet pilot in Vietnam. After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands. He was captured and spent six years in a Communist Vietnamese prison. He survived the ordeal and now lectures on lessons learned from that experience. One day Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant and a man at another table came over to them and said, "You're Charles Plumb, aren't you?" Surprised, Mr. Plumb said yes. The other man said, "You flew jet fighters in Vietnam for the aircraft Kitty Hawk. You were shot down" "How in the world do you know that?" Plumb asked. "I packed your parachute," the man replied. Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude. He jumped up and shook hands and thanked the man. "If that parachute hadn't worked. I wouldn't be here today," he told him gratefully.

Plumb couldn't sleep that night, thinking about the man. He kept wondering what the man might have looked like in a Navy uniform. He wondered how many times he had walked past him on the ship and not even said 'good morning' because he was a fighter pilot and maybe thought he was a little better than the sailor. He thought of the many hours that the sailor spent on a long wooden table down inside the ship carefully weaving and folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands the fate of someone he didn't know.

In his speeches now Plumb asks his audience "Who's packing your parachute?" I know who packed mine. It was other TCF parents who had been shot down before me when they lost their child. These people knew that my parachute had to be packed carefully. It was Charlie Walton whose book "When There Are No Words" gave me the first glimmer of hope. None of these people could spare me the pain of landing in foreign territory and serving that time in grief prison, but they saved my life just the same by packing my parachute well.

I hope I am passing that on to someone else and packing their parachute well. I can't spare anyone the heartaches of the grieving process, but I can try to pack their parachute well enough so that they survive. And a heartfelt thank you to all of you who packed my parachute so well, holding on your hands the fate of someone you didn't really even know.

Marcia Carter TCF Marietta GA, author of Stephen's Moon

BUTTERFLIES

You were our but for a while As slowly you emerged from your cocoons. Nurtured by our love, But gone from us too soon.

We held you gently in our hands And watched you test your fragile wings – So beautiful to see.

Then God called you softly from above “Now let them go, for butterflies are free.” Priscilla D. Kenney, TCF, No. Reading. MA

THE CROSS BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD By Ruth Nichols

We all seem the same, yet we’re not at all; Some stand so straight, some are ready to fall.

It’s always the same when you pass us by, You wonder what happened, you let out a sigh.

Ambitious dreams lost, families now broken, Hearts torn apart and words left unspoken. Laughter and joy removed from tomorrow,

You let your mind roam and feel such sorrow. There was a time, before our arrival,

When life was naïve, laughed at survival. Life was savored and lived, carefree and pure, Life was youthful and strong, life was so sure.

So abruptly those times came to a halt And nothing was altered by finding fault.

We are the same in the reason we’re here; Yet, so different in the name that we bear.

We each stand here representatively; Not for an end, but for a history.

A history, a life - - - with so much untold, A history, a life - - - that will never unfold,

A history, a life - - - worth much more than gold. All seen in the cross by the side of the road.

In loving memory of all our children or TCF Fredericksburg Chapter

who died leaving a cross on the side of the road. By Kathie Kelly, Chapter Leader TCF Fredericksburg

IN LOVING MEMORY OF JACK ARMSTRONG 2-13-77 TO 8-7-95

Our hearts still ache with sadness

Secret tears still flow What it meant to lose you

No one will ever know. When days are sad and lonely,

And everything goes wrong, I seem to hear you whisper,

“Cheer up and carry on.” Each time I see your picture, You seem to smile and say, “Don’t cry, I’m only sleeping,

We’ll meet again someday.”

Sadly missed by Mom & Dad - Rick & Nancy Armstrong, TCF Fredericksburg Chapter

LOVE GIFTS There are no dues or fees to belong to The Compassionate Friends. Just as our chapter is run entirely by volunteers interested in furthering the work of TCF, your voluntary, tax-deductible donations make it possible for us to mail this monthly newsletter, contact newly bereaved parents, continue our participation in TCF/National, and meet other chapter expenses. Often, as they find hope and healing within the group, parents make a contribution usually in memory of a child who has died, or maybe a gift of thanksgiving for their surviving children. These contributions are our only source of funds. All proceeds given to our chapter are used within the community for outreach and to provide a place for newly bereaved families to seek support. Gifts are tax deductible. If you would like to make a donation, please send to The Compassionate Friends, The Fredericksburg Chapter, P.O. Box 172, King George, VA 22485. All gifts are welcome and truly appreciated. If you are interested in helping out with our phone bill, paper for the newsletters, postage or ink cartridges for the printer, please indicate it on your love gift. Without the support of you our chapter would not be here today to help you and those who are just beginning our journey. Thank you again for all your support.

NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL OFFICE

The Tony Brown Foundation is awarding:

A Scholarship to The Compassionate Friends National Conference.

The Tony Brown Foundation LLC (to be known herein after as TBF) is granting a wish to ONE

Continental USA Member of The Compassionate Friends. If your wish is to attend The National

Conference this year in CHICAGO, then The Tony Brown Foundation wants to help.

Why?

After my first conference in July 2011, two years after the death of Tony, I came back and wrote about my

experience and how deeply it healed and touched me. I vowed to spread that feeling through the

foundation and share the power of compassion and hope with another grieving parent. The sense of

community and love was overwhelming. People actually WANT to hear about your child, care about your

REAL feelings and treat you as part of their family. It is something that must be experienced!

For more information please go to The Tony Brown Foundation

37th National Conference in Chicago, IL

The Compassionate Friends 37th National Conference will be held in Chicago, IL on July 11-13, 2014. "Miles

of Compassion through The Winds of Hope" is the theme of this year's event which promises more of last

year's great national conference experience. The 2014 conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare

right near the airport. We are keeping you updated with details on the national website as well as on our

TCF/USA Facebook Page and elsewhere as they become available. Plan to come and be a part of this

heartwarming experience.

The Hyatt Regency O'Hare is now accepting reservations for TCF's National Conference. To make your

reservation, please access the following link, which will take you directly to TCF's reservation portal on Hyatt's

website. Conference attendees are receiving a discounted room rate. Please be aware that our room block is

filling very quickly! While this is good news, this also means that there may be some of you who will miss out

on our discounted rates if you wait too long to make your reservations. As you make your plans, please keep

this in mind. We will continue to keep everyone updated on our numbers and availability.

To Our First-Time Readers and New Members

And To Our Long-time Members

If you are receiving our newsletter for the first time, it is because someone has told us that you might find it helpful or you asked us to send it to you. We cordially invite you to attend any of our meetings which are held on the third Tuesday of each month at Redeemer Lutheran Church, in the Basement, 5120 Harrison Road, Fredericksburg from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. Nothing is required of you. There are no fees or dues. You need not speak a word. Coming to your first meeting is the hardest thing to do. But you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. If you have never come to a meeting, you are probably wondering what this group of people that you don’t even know can do for you. It is here that comfort and support can be given by those that “have been there”. We’ve all had chunks of our hearts torn out. Yet those holes get smaller with the loving touches, friendly smiles and kind reassuring words from each other. Try not judge your first meeting as to whether or not TCF will work for you. At your first meeting you were hoping that TCF could get you over your terrible pain and depression and loneliness and guilt and anger and all of the other faces of grief. You came expecting to go home, feeling “better, if not cured.” Instead you met other parents who are still coping with forms of grief after months or even years. Perhaps you didn’t notice there were some parents who were doing “OK.” But the bottom line is you may go home from the first meeting feeling worse than when you came. Give it another try you will probably find, that each meeting uncovers a piece of the puzzle of life after the death of a child. It may take several meetings, but, hopefully, you will find the road to recovery like we did.

To Our Long-time Members

“TCF gives me a sense of purpose. A good enough reason for you to consider sticking

around a while after you feel you have reached an acceptance or at least worked

through your grief. Others need you. Pass the love on—adopt a bereaved parent!”

Fay Harden, TCF - Tuscaloosa, AL

CAN YOU HELP? Do you remember your first meeting of The Compassionate Friends, those first months of your grief journey? You desperately needed someone to talk to, someone who knew the pain of losing a child, someone to hug you, cry with you, listen to you. And there are newly bereaved parents who now need your help. Are you willing to be there for them? If two years or more have passed since the death of your child, and you feel that you are ready to give back some of the support that was shown to you, please consider a place of service in our chapter. There is a job for everyone. Don’t wait call me at 540-775-8430. If you can’t serve, please, at least, come to meetings to lend your support and understanding to our newly bereaved families. We have had so many new members join us the past few months. We need all the help we can get to help them. Thank you from all of our children.

NEXT MEETING TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 2014 AT REDEEMER LUTHERAN CHURCH

IN THE FELLOWSHIP HALL OF THE CHURCH 5120 HARRISON ROAD FREDERICKSBURG, VA

THE COMPASSIONATE FRIENDS CREDO

We need not walk alone. We are The Compassionate Friends. We reach out to each other with love, with understanding, and with hope.

The children we mourn have died at all ages and from many different causes, but our love for them unites us. Your pain becomes my pain, just as your hope becomes my hope.

We come together from all walks of life, from many different circumstances. We are a unique family because we represent many races, creeds, and relationships.

We are young, and we are old. Some of us are far along in our grief, but others still feel a grief so fresh and so intensely painful that they feel helpless and see no hope.

Some of us have found our faith to be a source of strength, while some of us are struggling to find answers. Some of us are angry, filled with guilt or in deep depression, while others radiate

an inner peace. But whatever pain we bring to this gathering of The Compassionate Friends, it is pain we will share, just as we share with each other our love for the children who have died.

We are all seeking and struggling to build a future for ourselves, but we are committed to building a future together. We reach out to each other in love to share the pain as well as the joy, share

the anger as well as the peace, share the faith as well as the doubts, and help each other to grieve as well as to grow.
