THE ROTARY CLUB OF RICKMANSWORTH

The Rotary Club of Rickmansworth has for many years run this music competition with the help of the Three Rivers Music Society. The competition has always attracted very talented young people who have in many cases gone on to win other competitions, including the BBC Young Musician competition, as well as making careers in the musical world.

The Rotary Club organises many other youth activities, such as the Technology Tournament, Youth Speaks, Young Artist, Young Writer, Young Photographer, and Young Chef, culminating in District and National competitions. We also participate in a scheme called Dictionaries4Life for junior schools.

Rotary supports charities such as the local branches of The Alzeimers Society, Parkinson’s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease, Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, made contribution towards a MRI Scanner at Harefield Hospital and specialist equipment for cancer patients at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre. The proceeds of our Christmas street collections are always distributed to local charities and the needy in our area. This year we have raised funds for the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre and the Michael Sobell Hospice. This year the Rickmansworth Rotary Club have helped sponsor a public defibrillator, which is located on the wall of the CAB Office in Northway, Rickmansworth.

We contribute yearly to the Rotary Foundation. The Foundation helps after natural & man-made disasters, with volunteers, funds or services such as Shelter Boxes (containing vital basic survival equipment such as tents, spades and water purifiers) to such areas. Recently we helped earthquake victims in Haiti and Japan, and the tsunami areas around the Indian Ocean. We also helped and supported the victims of the floods here last year, and the tragic fire only earlier this month. One specific campaign is to rid the world of Polio, a project supported by the Gates Foundation. Over many years Rotary have achieved a 99% elimination.

We are, therefore, a service club with a strong social element, meeting fortnightly for fellowship and for future project planning. We welcome new members to join us in our ventures.

THE ADJUDICATORS

DAVID OLIVER, ARAM, ARCM, LRAM

David won an Open Scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music where he studied with Professor Leslie England. His studentship was interrupted by National Service, but this was turned to good use, being served at the Royal Marines School of Music. While at the school David played several Piano Concertos with the Royal Marines Symphony Orchestra. On return to the RAM he won several prizes and was awarded the Recital Diploma. A career of concert work and teaching began and, following his appointment to the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music as an examiner, he was awarded an ARAM. David taught piano for many years at Harrow School, St. Helen’s, Northwood, the Watford School of Music and the North London Collegiate School. As an examiner, he has traveled widely, undertaking tours to Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. On some of these tours he has recorded Recital Programmes for both radio and television. He also works as an adjudicator at music festivals, including 5 visits to the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. When time permits he enjoys performing chamber music with friends and colleagues

NICHOLAS OLIVER, GRSM ARAM

Nicholas studied at the Purcell School, the RAM and the RNCM. He won the Young Pianist of the Year award in 1984 and was 2nd at the 1991 Dudley International Piano Competition. He was also winner of the Rickmansworth Young Musician of the Year Competition in 1984. His career is wide ranging. He gives numerous recitals with singers and instrumentalists throughout the UK, several times at the South Bank, Wigmore Hall and most of Britain’s major concert halls. He has undertaken recital tours in many European countries and has performed in the Americas, Australia, Asia and Africa. He has broadcast frequently on radio and released several recordings. He has been Head of Piano Accompaniment at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester since 2003 and is in much demand as an adjudicator. He is an examiner in the UK and internationally for ABRSM and is a member of the examiner Trainer panel. He is a founder member of “The Commonwealth Resounds”, an organisation dedicated to promoting music and musicians from Commonwealth countries; in that capacity he has worked in Africa, Australia, Malta, Sri Lanka and the Caribbean.

Nicholas was made an associate of the RAM in 1997 and was elected to the Royal Society of Musicians in 2000.

HEATHER BIRKS, GRSM ARNCM

Heather studied at the Royal Northern College of Music, gaining Distinction in Performance on the viola. For some years she taught both violin and viola as well as freelancing with chamber orchestras in the north before joining the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. She later moved to London and joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Radio Orchestra. From 1984 to 2004 she freelanced with the London Symphony and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras. She has played with all the major London orchestras, at the Royal Opera and English National Opera Houses. She has taken part in many recordings with these orchestras for film, disc and television. Throughout her career she has continued to play chamber music, a repertoire which she enjoys coaching. As well as maintaining a busy teaching schedule, Heather examines for the Associated Board and adjudicates at regional festivals.
