We are just 2+ weeks until mid year break and children and

staff have done very well staving off colds and illnesses. At

assemblies I have spoken about ensuring that children wear

jumpers when leaving heated rooms and the need for lots of

fresh fruit and vegetables to build resistance to illness.

Unfortunately a week off often equates to the loss of up to 3

weeks of learning as absences are very disorienting and

disruptive to education.

GAMING: This an area where parents have indicated concerns

and have been seeking guidance, so when I found a World

Health Organisation research article on gaming and the way

that it can affect moods and life choices, I selected pertinent

parts to compile into an article elsewhere in this newsletter.

Please take the time to read it carefully as it is often VERY

DIFFICULT to pull back technology usage after it becomes an

ingrained habit.

REPORTS: will be sent to you in the coming weeks and we

request that you check at the office that we have the most up

to date email addresses for BOTH parents.

Reminder elsewhere in newsletter.

UPCOMING FORUM: On August 23rd there will a COMMUNITY

FORUM AND FREE FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT in the Community

Centre. The sausage sizzle will be subsidised and Parent Club

will be selling popcorn, drinks and lollies. We hope to see

children in PJs and sleeping bags and hope to see dads and

mums there as we plan the future of Coldstream.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT CONT.

When does gaming become a problem? New

online test predicts risk of gaming disorder

Addiction to video games has been recognised as a new type of mental illness by the World Health Organisation (WHO), one associated with extreme cases of uncontrolled gaming behaviour and excessive game playing. In line with the criteria developed by the WHO, researchers have developed the first psychological test to check for ‘gaming disorder’– which they now plan to expand to produce the largest study to date on gaming disorder. Now available to the public and accessible online, the test can tell participants if they meet the WHO criteria for gaming disorder. The results will provide gamers with feedback on their video game habits in comparison with the rest of the population. Lead researcher Dr Bruno Schivinski, said: “We want to understand the point at which gaming becomes a health problem, and which factors contribute to the development of gaming disorders.” Anyone who can no longer control their gaming behaviour prioritises computer games over other activities and does not change this behaviour despite negative consequences could be suffering from gaming disorder according to the WHO definition. A 34-year-old male who took the test, and wishes to remain anonymous, said: “I had no idea I was playing too much… no one says anything about that, you know? You just keep playing and everything is fine… “I was playing every day for six hours or more after getting home from work. I was not sleeping much, not going out with friends, not eating much, and when working from home, I was not doing anything but playing games. That is not good, I am changing it now, but it is not easy without support.” “Excessive video gaming is already a serious health risk in Asian countries and an emerging problem in Europe.”

SCHOOL CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Hi Coldstream

Last weekend we went to Belgrave to take part in the judging of movies entered in the Lantern and Light

International Children’s Film Festival. We were proud to represent our school and have input in the

decision of the winner. We voted but are yet to find out the results. Overall it was a good day.

Last Friday we played Seville in interschool sports. It was a good game for football, the scores were 58 to

12, we won. The netball scores were 9 to 12, we lost, and the volley stars scores were 11 to 15, we lost. It

was a good day anyway and the weather was great. Next week we will vs Wandin Yallock.

Thank you for reading our report and we will have another one for you next week.

Tyler and Taylah Mae

PARENT CLUB NEWS

We have our steamed dim sim lunch coming up on Thursday.

Our Earn and Learn sticker boxes are filling up nicely. Just a reminder, we have collection boxes at

both Lilydale and Chirnside Woolworth stores. They can also be left in the letter box in the school

office. We have plenty of sheets available if you choose to adhere the stickers yourself before

handing them in.

Thank you all very much for your support.

SCHOOL COUNCIL PRESIDENT’S REPORT –

I had the pleasure of going across to the information night for Lyrebird College. What a remarkable place it will be for our Education Precinct and for the children who will be attending it. Listening to the plans and visions that the Directors have for this school, was amazing. To hear how far families have to travel, just so their kids can be in the best learning environment, was heartbreaking. Something I take for granted, knowing my kids can go to a great school within walking distance to home.

I wish them all the best for the coming months and for their expected opening in 2020.

On June the third I went to the Sea Life Aquarium. I saw a lot of great sea creatures.

I saw turtles. They have webbed feet. I think they are really cute.

I had a shark friend. It kept following me around the clean tank. I think it was would have liked to eat me!

I also loved the penguins. They were so cute and looked so soft.

I liked the jelly fish jelly fish because they can change colour.

I also liked the clown fish. I saw them in the anemone. It was really cool! There were also lion fish. They were

scary but beautiful.

I loved the eels. They were yellow ad that is my favourite colour.

The crocodile was huge and green. It had large sharp teeth.

After the crocodile we saw a big tank of fish. It was amazing!

We went to the rock pool as well where we got to hold and touch different types of sea creatures.

The Sea Life Aquarium was amazing! - Mya

What an amazing day the Melbourne Sea Life Aquarium! On our way there I was sitting next to Mya on the bus. I

brought a word search with me to keep me busy. When we got there it started to rain.

Our group was called the Sharks. The other group was called the sea turtles. I wish I was in the sea turtles group.

My favourite animal was the puffer fish. The puffer fish have huge eyes. They have spikey looking skin.

My second favourite animal I saw was the jelly fish. They really look cool too. I think they look like chandeliers in

the water.

I learned a lot about the animals at the aquarium and I can’t wait to go back one day. - Briony

Sea Life Aquarium was the best aquarium I have ever been to. If you get a chance you should go there one day. It

was an awesome excursion.

When we were going through the tunnel one of the sharks was asleep. It looked like it was awake because they

keep moving even when they are sleeping.

Sting rays are also amazing. I was sad because one of them was missing their tail. Their tail had been cut off

because people didn’t want to get stung. It was sad to see.

What an amzing day! - Evan

We went to the Melbourne Sea Life Aquarium to learn about different sea life.

First we saw a rock pool. We saw some star fish. We got to touch the star fish but not pick them up because they

like to stay in the water the whole time.

We went to see the green turtles after that. They were really cool and so amazing! The green turtles have green

webbed feet and a brown shell.

The penguins waddle with their knees bent. The penguins have little wrist bands to let the people know who they

are and how old they are too. They do this because the penguins all look the same. Some have blue and some had

red wrist bands.

It was the best excursion I have had in my life! - Alsie
